Dell Technologies, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) and NetApp fell sharply on October 14, 2026, after Barclays cut all three stocks from Overweight to Equal Weight. Dell dropped 11% during the session, HPE declined 8% and NetApp fell 7%. Barclays said enterprise-AI spending has not yet produced the inflection investors were pricing in, while unusually high memory and hardware prices may have inflated recent revenue growth.
What happened to Dell, HPE and NetApp
Barclays analyst Tim Long downgraded the three enterprise-infrastructure companies in a coordinated action. The report challenged the assumption that the current AI-hardware rally would continue producing accelerating growth and repeated earnings surprises.

| Company | October 14 session move | Barclays rating | Price target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dell Technologies | Down 11% | Overweight to Equal Weight | $574, reduced from $603 |
| Hewlett Packard Enterprise | Down 8% | Overweight to Equal Weight | $77, reduced from $83 |
| NetApp | Down 7% | Overweight to Equal Weight | $219, unchanged |
These are volatile, same-day figures from October 14, 2026, rather than a settled view of fair value. A downgrade changes Barclays’ recommendation; it does not predict that a stock must keep falling.

Long wrote that “we don’t see a meaningful AI inflection yet.” In this context, an inflection means a clear, broad acceleration in enterprise customers’ AI infrastructure purchases that would lift growth beyond what current estimates already assume.

Barclays’ argument has two linked parts:
- Higher memory and hardware prices have supported revenue for enterprise-focused companies.
- When those prices normalize, the same unit volumes could produce slower dollar growth, leaving less room for earnings surprises and further valuation expansion.
Long wrote: “As a result, we expect a meaningful deceleration in growth over the next two years and memory price normalize and potentially decline.” The wording describes a forecast, not evidence that enterprise AI demand has already collapsed.
Is this a demand slowdown or a valuation reset?
The sell-off reflects both possibilities. Barclays did not establish that customers are canceling AI projects. Instead, it questioned whether spending is broad and durable enough to justify the prices investors had already assigned to the group.
The seven enterprise-exposed stocks in Long’s coverage had risen about 140% in 2026, compared with 14% for the S&P 500. They traded at roughly 21 times estimated 2027 earnings, versus a five-year average near 15 times. That gap means even a credible long-term AI story can suffer a sharp pullback if near-term growth fails to accelerate.

Dell illustrates the scale of the expectations: Long’s model placed its AI-server revenue at about $75 billion for the fiscal year. The target cut from $603 to $574 therefore signals less confidence in additional upside, not necessarily a rejection of Dell’s AI-server business.
How the three stocks differ in Barclays’ case
All three names were treated as enterprise-AI infrastructure beneficiaries, but the downgrade did not imply identical exposure or identical estimates.
| Stock | Evidence highlighted in the report | Immediate implication |
|---|---|---|
| Dell | AI-server revenue modeled at about $75 billion for the fiscal year | Target reduced by $29 to $574 |
| HPE | Enterprise hardware exposure affected by memory and component pricing | Target reduced by $6 to $77 |
| NetApp | Enterprise exposure included in the same downgrade group | Target held at $219 despite the rating cut |
The report did not provide a comparable AI-revenue figure for HPE or NetApp in the cited coverage. NetApp’s unchanged target shows that Barclays’ rating change was not accompanied by a lower published target for that company.

Why memory prices matter
Memory is a major input for AI servers and other data-center hardware. If memory prices rise, a vendor’s reported revenue can increase even without equivalent growth in units shipped. That can make growth look stronger temporarily, but it can also squeeze margins for buyers or manufacturers depending on contract terms.

Investors would then need to see higher unit demand and stronger mix to keep revenue and earnings growing at the rates implied by current valuations.

Reuters linked the broader AI-infrastructure decline to rising interest-rate expectations. Higher rates increase the cost of financing large data-center and AI buildouts, particularly for companies carrying substantial debt or relying on external capital.

That macro pressure affected the sector at the same time as Barclays’ downgrades. It does not prove that Dell, HPE or NetApp face a funding shortfall; it raises the hurdle for projects whose returns depend on cheap financing and rapid utilization growth.
What investors should watch next
- Enterprise order growth: whether customers expand AI deployments across many businesses or limit spending to a small number of large projects.
- Units versus price: whether revenue growth continues after memory and hardware prices stop rising.
- Margins and mix: whether vendors retain profitability as component costs and competitive pricing change.
- Valuation support: whether earnings estimates catch up with multiples near 21 times forward earnings, or estimates are reduced.
- Financing conditions: whether interest-rate expectations make data-center expansion slower or more expensive.
The key unresolved question is whether enterprise-AI demand reaccelerates strongly enough to offset normalizing prices and higher financing costs. The October 14 downgrade does not answer that question, and there is no established timetable for Barclays to reverse its ratings.
