Dell 14S DS14260 key facts: How close is it to XPS 14 performance?

Short answer: The Dell 14S DS14260 is a well-built 14-inch laptop with unusually strong reported battery life, useful built-in ports and several display choices. It is not automatically as powerful as an XPS 14: the answer changes with the Core Ultra processor, panel, workload and the exact XPS configuration being compared.

Notebookcheck measured 19 hours 7 minutes of Wi-Fi web browsing on a Core Ultra 7 355 review unit, while Tom’s Guide also found very strong endurance. The compromises are a relatively high weight for the class, load temperatures around 90°C in Notebookcheck’s testing, no webcam shutter and weak HDR performance on the OLED option. Check the complete DS14260 SKU before buying because Dell sells this model family in materially different combinations.

What the Dell 14S DS14260 actually is

“Dell 14S DS14260” is a family name, not one fixed specification. Dell’s current US listing shows Core Ultra 5 322 and Core Ultra 7 355 choices, 16 GB of memory, 512 GB of storage and both non-touch FHD+ and OLED touch configurations. Notebookcheck documents a broader family that also includes a Core Ultra X7 358H option, 120 Hz IPS panels and additional touch and non-touch combinations. A review of one configuration therefore cannot be treated as a review of every 14S sold worldwide.

When you compare prices or performance, write down the complete model: processor, screen type, touch status, memory, storage, country and seller. Dell’s US product page is dynamic and can change its selectable configurations and promotions; it showed one $1,379.99 offer when accessed on October 13, 2026, while another Dell page displayed a different amount. That figure is a dated US offer, not a universal DS14260 price. See the current listing at Dell’s 14S product page.

The name can also cause confusion with Dell’s XPS range. Dell’s brochure identifies the XPS 14 as model DA14260; the 14S is DS14260. Those are separate products, even though their model numbers look similar. The distinction matters when you search for drivers, replacement parts or benchmark results.

Configuration checklist before you compare it with an XPS 14

  1. Record the CPU. Core Ultra 5 322, Core Ultra 7 355 and Core Ultra X7 358H are different performance tiers. Do not assume that a Core Ultra 5 result applies to a Core Ultra 7 system.
  2. Record the display. FHD+ IPS, 2.5K-class 120 Hz IPS and 1920×1200 OLED screens have different sharpness, motion, brightness and HDR behavior.
  3. Confirm touch status. Some family configurations are touch models and others are not; touch also changes the listed weight.
  4. Confirm the market. Dell’s US selection is not identical to the wider family documented by Notebookcheck, and Australian listings use Australian-dollar pricing.
  5. Confirm memory and storage. The current US page lists 16 GB and 512 GB for its shown offers, but the exact configuration should be checked on the order page and invoice.

Dell’s detailed hardware diagrams and specifications are in the DS14260 setup and specifications manual.

Design, weight and port selection

The 14S’s physical design is one of its clearest advantages. Notebookcheck praised the more rigid metal body and integrated ports, while Tom’s Guide described an aluminum chassis that feels more premium than a typical mid-range laptop. This is a practical benefit if you regularly connect displays, storage or wired accessories instead of carrying a separate dock.

Hardware detail Published specification or review finding
Non-touch listed weight 3.28 lb, according to Dell’s current US specifications
Touch listed weight 3.40 lb, according to Dell’s current US specifications
Battery capacity 70 Wh
Thunderbolt connectivity Two Thunderbolt 4 ports
Video output One HDMI 2.1 port
USB-A connectivity Two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports
Audio One headset port

The 3.28- to 3.40-pound range is not exceptionally light for a 14-inch ultraportable. It is the tradeoff for the metal construction, 70 Wh battery and full-size port selection. If your priority is the lowest possible carry weight, measure the actual configuration rather than relying on the “14-inch” label.

Why the ports matter

Two Thunderbolt 4 connections can handle high-speed peripherals and compatible docks, while HDMI 2.1 gives you a direct route to an external display or television. Two USB-A ports cover older devices such as a mouse, flash drive or presentation clicker, and the headset jack avoids a USB adapter for wired audio. Dell lists these ports for its US DS14260 specification; regional configurations should still be checked before purchase.

Display choices: the most important 14S decision

Notebookcheck lists five display directions across the DS14260 family. They are not interchangeable upgrades: each solves a different problem.

Panel option Resolution and refresh Touch availability What it suits
FHD+ IPS 1920×1200, 60 Hz Touch or non-touch General office work, web browsing and longer battery priorities
High-resolution IPS 2560×1600, 120 Hz Family option documented by Notebookcheck Smoother scrolling, sharper text and motion-sensitive work
OLED 1920×1200, 60 Hz Touch or non-touch High contrast and vivid video in controlled indoor lighting

The OLED option is not automatically the best screen. Notebookcheck found it relatively dim and reported poor HDR support, so it may disappoint if you expect bright HDR movies or outdoor usability. The 120 Hz choice is IPS rather than OLED; it favors fluid motion and scrolling over OLED contrast. FHD+ IPS is the least demanding option and can be the sensible choice for office applications, especially when endurance matters more than pixel density.

Dell’s US configurator currently shows fewer or different combinations than Notebookcheck’s family overview. Treat the table as a map of documented possibilities, not a promise that every country offers every panel. Read the panel name, resolution, refresh rate and touch designation on the exact configuration page.

Performance: is it as powerful as an XPS 14?

There is no universal yes or no. Notebookcheck describes the tested Core Ultra 7 355 14S as having raw performance similar to the previous Dell 14 Plus with Core Ultra 7 256V. Its review specifically points buyers who need more performance toward Core Ultra X7 configurations. That makes the processor choice more important than the 14S badge.

Tom’s Guide’s benchmark table also shows that the 14S and XPS 14 do not lead or match each other uniformly across every listed test. A laptop can be ahead in one short CPU test and behind in a longer or differently optimized workload. The XPS 14’s model identity is DA14260, not DS14260, and its processor, cooling setup and display configuration must be matched before drawing a conclusion.

Measurement Reported result Context

Geekbench multi-core 11,064 Tom’s Guide review-unit measurement
HandBrake video-editing test 7 minutes 22 seconds Tom’s Guide review-unit measurement

Those numbers describe Tom’s Guide’s tested configuration, not a guarantee for every DS14260. Read the full review context at Tom’s Guide’s Dell 14S review.

What the results mean for everyday work

  • Documents, browser tabs and video calls: A 16 GB configuration with a Core Ultra 5 322 or Core Ultra 7 355 should be evaluated primarily on screen preference, fan behavior and price rather than on small benchmark differences.
  • Compiling, large spreadsheets and code tools: A higher-tier processor can reduce wait times, but sustained cooling and the exact software workload matter more than a single Geekbench score.
  • Photo work: The higher-resolution IPS or OLED options can make image inspection more comfortable, but verify brightness and color requirements because the OLED review found weak HDR behavior.
  • Video editing: Tom’s Guide advises choosing a higher configuration for more demanding creative work. The 14S can handle an editing workflow, but it should not be treated as a workstation replacement solely because its short benchmark scores are competitive.
  • 3D rendering and GPU-heavy work: The supplied reviews do not establish a discrete-GPU performance advantage for the 14S. Choose based on the exact processor platform and your application’s GPU requirements rather than assuming “XPS-level” graphics.

In short, the 14S can approach an XPS 14 in selected CPU tasks when the processors are comparable, but the comparison breaks down when one system uses a stronger XPS chip, a different thermal profile or a different workload. “As powerful as an XPS 14” is a configuration question, not a product-wide specification.

Battery life: a genuine strength with test conditions attached

Notebookcheck measured 19 hours 7 minutes of Wi-Fi web browsing on its tested Dell 14S DS14260 configuration. That is a publication test result under its own brightness, browser, network and power settings; it is not a promised runtime for every CPU, panel or workload. Tom’s Guide likewise reported very strong battery performance in its week-long review.

The 70 Wh battery gives the 14S a substantial capacity for a 14-inch system, but real runtime changes with screen choice and use. OLED brightness, a 120 Hz refresh mode, sustained processor load, video export, external displays and poor Wi-Fi conditions can all reduce unplugged time compared with a light web-browsing test. A non-touch FHD+ IPS configuration is the most logical endurance-oriented choice when the retailer offers that combination.

Use the 19-hour figure as evidence that the platform can be exceptionally efficient in light work, not as a travel guarantee. If your day consists of continuous video encoding, large software builds or high display brightness, plan for a charger regardless of the headline test.

Heat, noise and other limitations

Notebookcheck recorded core temperatures around 90°C under load. That is a normal consequence of a thin performance laptop sustaining high clock speeds, but it means the 14S is not a cool, silent workstation during long renders or exports. Short bursts may feel fast while extended workloads can expose the limits of the cooling system.

The same review flags the laptop’s relatively high weight, the absence of a webcam shutter and poor HDR support even on the OLED model. These are practical concerns rather than universal deal-breakers:

  • Weight: At 3.28 lb non-touch or 3.40 lb touch as listed by Dell, it is portable but not among the lightest 14-inch machines.
  • Webcam privacy: There is no built-in physical shutter, so privacy-conscious owners need an operating-system control, an external cover that does not obstruct the camera or an external webcam.
  • HDR: The OLED panel’s contrast does not compensate for the poor HDR support reported by Notebookcheck.
  • Sustained creative loads: Tom’s Guide recommends a higher configuration for demanding video work, and the temperature result reinforces that advice.

These findings come from specific review units and methods. They should inform your decision without being presented as identical behavior for every processor and screen combination.

How the 14S compares with an XPS 14 in real buying decisions

Choose the 14S when ports and endurance matter

The 14S is the more convincing choice when you want two Thunderbolt 4 ports, HDMI 2.1, two USB-A ports and a headset jack built into the chassis, along with a 70 Wh battery and strong independent battery results. Its metal construction also gives it a more substantial feel than many mid-range designs.

Choose an XPS configuration when your workload needs more headroom

An XPS 14 may be the better direction when the exact configuration supplies a stronger processor or graphics platform for your applications. The comparison must use the XPS 14 model DA14260 and a specific CPU, not a generic “XPS 14” label. Tom’s Guide’s results do not show a clean sweep by either laptop, so look at the benchmark that resembles your workload.

Do not use the badge as a display comparison

A 14S with a 120 Hz IPS screen can feel more responsive than an XPS configuration with a lower refresh rate, while an OLED 14S can offer deeper contrast but weak HDR. Resolution, brightness, refresh rate and touch status should be compared line by line.

Who should buy the Dell 14S DS14260?

  • Students and mobile professionals: The battery results, 16 GB memory options and broad port set make it a practical primary laptop, provided the 3.28-pound-plus weight is acceptable.
  • Office and productivity users: FHD+ IPS is likely the sensible value and endurance choice; the 120 Hz IPS option is attractive if smooth scrolling is important.
  • Frequent presenters: HDMI 2.1 and USB-A ports reduce adapter dependence.
  • Content creators: Select the highest processor tier available in your market and treat video editing as a sustained-load task. Check the panel’s brightness and HDR behavior before paying extra for OLED.
  • Privacy-sensitive users: Plan for the lack of a webcam shutter.
  • Ultra-light travelers: Compare the listed weight with lighter 14-inch alternatives before committing; the 14S favors battery and connectivity over minimum mass.

How to verify a listing before you order

  1. Open the seller’s full specification view and confirm that the model is DS14260, not the similarly numbered XPS DA14260.
  2. Capture the processor name exactly: Core Ultra 5 322, Core Ultra 7 355 or Core Ultra X7 358H.
  3. Check the panel resolution, IPS or OLED type, 60 Hz or 120 Hz refresh rate and touch status.
  4. Confirm 16 GB memory and 512 GB storage if that is the configuration you intend to buy; do not assume every regional listing matches Dell’s US page.
  5. Verify the ports against Dell’s specification sheet, especially if you need HDMI 2.1, Thunderbolt 4 or USB-A.
  6. Record the price, currency, date and promotion terms. Dell’s displayed offers can change, and an Australian-dollar listing should not be compared directly with a US-dollar offer.
  7. Check the return policy before choosing OLED or touch, since those options change weight and may not suit your brightness or battery priorities.

Verdict

The Dell 14S DS14260 is a strong mid-range 14-inch laptop whose best arguments are its rigid metal chassis, unusually complete port selection and excellent reported light-use battery life. It can be close to an XPS 14 in selected CPU workloads, but it is not universally as powerful. The processor and display configuration decide the outcome.

Buy it when you value endurance, built-in connectivity and a premium-feeling chassis more than minimum weight or best-in-class HDR. Move to a higher DS14260 processor tier—or evaluate a specific XPS 14 configuration—when sustained video editing, compiling or other demanding workloads are central. Most importantly, compare the exact SKU rather than the family name.
