Delhi Police is the force; your local police station is one of its units, serving a defined area. But if you need to report a cognizable offence, you do not have to go to the station for the area where it happened just to have your information received: section 173(1) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) allows it to be given to an officer in charge of a police station irrespective of where the offence occurred. The unit that investigates or handles follow-up may differ.
What is the difference between Delhi Police and a local police station?
Delhi Police is the police force responsible for policing in Delhi. A police station is a local unit within that force, with an assigned territorial area. Delhi Police’s Citizens’ Charter describes these territorial limits, while the current procedure for reporting a cognizable offence is set out in the BNSS.

So the choice is not usually “Delhi Police or the local station”: the station is part of Delhi Police. The practical questions are where you can report, which service route fits your issue, and which unit will handle investigation and follow-up. The precise internal routing in an individual case is not established by the cited public information.

Can you file an FIR at any police station in Delhi?
For information about a cognizable offence, BNSS section 173(1) says it may be given to an officer in charge of a police station “irrespective of the area where the offence is committed.” This is the statutory basis for reporting across station boundaries, often called a Zero FIR. The operative rule is the statute’s wording, rather than the label.

The BNSS came into force on 1 July 2024, according to India Code. The cross-area rule applies to information about cognizable offences; it should not be generalized to every service request, civil dispute, or non-cognizable matter. The classification depends on the alleged offence and applicable law.
Reporting and investigation jurisdiction are related but distinct. A station can receive the information even if the incident happened elsewhere; investigation and later follow-up may be handled by the unit with authority over the facts. Do not assume that the receiving station will personally conduct every investigative step.

- Get help immediately if there is danger. Call 112 rather than waiting to complete an online form.
- Give the information to an officer in charge at a station you can reach. Explain when and where the incident happened, who was involved if known, and what evidence may be available. Section 173(1) permits cognizable-offence information irrespective of territory.
- If you send the information electronically under section 173, sign it within three days. The section requires this for information sent by electronic communication.
- Ask for the record and keep the reference. Section 173 provides for the information to be entered in the prescribed record and a copy to be given to the informant free of cost. Keep the copy, acknowledgement, and any complaint or FIR reference.
- Follow up through the relevant service where available. Delhi Police’s FIR search asks for district, police station and year. The public upload excludes FIRs categorized as sensitive, so not finding an FIR there does not establish that no record exists. Use the portal’s complaint-status or FIR-view service where applicable.
Can a station refuse because the incident happened in another area?
For information relating to a cognizable offence, section 173(1) says it may be given irrespective of where the offence occurred. If the station disputes jurisdiction or refuses to record it, keep a factual note of the date, time, station and officer details, and preserve any written or electronic acknowledgement.

Section 173(4) sets out an escalation route if an officer in charge refuses to record the information:
- Send the substance of the information in writing and by post to the Superintendent of Police concerned.
- If that officer is satisfied that the information discloses a cognizable offence, the officer is to investigate or direct an investigation.
- If the matter remains unresolved, section 173(4) allows an application to a Magistrate; section 175(3) specifies support by affidavit.
This is a statutory process, not a guarantee of a particular result. Because the appropriate escalation and application depend on the facts, qualified legal advice may help.

Can you file a police complaint online in Delhi?
Delhi Police lists online Complaint Lodging, Theft e-FIR, View FIR and View Complaint Status services. Choose the category that matches your situation and retain the acknowledgement or reference. The existence of these options does not establish that every complaint can be submitted or resolved entirely online. For an emergency, call 112; for information about a cognizable offence, section 173 provides the station-based reporting route described above.

For an FIR search, the portal asks for district, police station and year. Delhi Police says sensitive FIRs are excluded from the public upload set, so the search is not a complete public record of all FIRs. Online eligibility and service details can change; check the live service page rather than relying on older descriptions.
