The 72-hour deadline begins when the order is communicated to Meta—not automatically on the date it was issued, 8 October 2026. The order applies to listed material and does not amount to a general ban on AI, criticism, parody or satire.
What the Delhi High Court ordered
In Kangana Ranaut v. Meta Platforms Inc. & Ors., CS(COMM) 1100/2026, Justice Vikas Mahajan issued an interim order on 8 October 2026. The court restrained the defendants, including John Does, from unauthorized exploitation of Ranaut’s name, image, likeness, voice, speeches, signature, persona and other personality attributes.

The order separately restrains creation or dissemination of specified AI-generated content, deepfakes, synthetic media, manipulated videos and audio, fabricated speeches, false endorsements and impersonation content depicting or purporting to depict her. It also covers digital assets falsely suggesting association, affiliation, endorsement or authorization. These directions concern the material and defendants covered by the order; they are not a final ruling on every possible use of a public figure’s identity. Read the digitally signed order.
What Meta and government agencies must do
Meta’s takedown deadline
Meta was directed to remove, disable access to and permanently take down the identified content listed in Annexure A and Document K within 72 hours after Ranaut communicates the order to it. The trigger is communication, rather than the order’s issue date. The order also requires compliance affidavits within two weeks.

Blocking listed websites
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) were directed to issue necessary directions to internet service providers and telecom service providers to block or remove access to the listed infringing websites within the same 72-hour period after communication of the order.
What material was at issue
The suit materials, as summarized in the order, alleged fabricated statements, manipulated videos, AI-generated content, morphed images, false quotes and identity misuse. They described content falsely depicting Ranaut in situations or activities that had not occurred. These are descriptions of the plaintiff’s case and material before the court, not findings that every allegation has been independently established.

The court considered specified AI-generated or morphed sexual and explicit deepfakes, as well as deceptive manipulated audio-visual content. It observed that such content could mislead viewers, writing: “Such content is inherently deceptive and is capable of misleading ordinary viewers into believing the same to be genuine.” The statement addresses the deceptive material discussed in this case.
Justice Mahajan also wrote: “This further includes protection to the plaintiff against such instances of the impugned content, involving AI-generated/morphed, sexual, and explicit deepfakes.” The order discusses intermediary rules in connection with obscene or pornographic material and false quotes; its relief remains tied to the specified content and proceedings.

Does the order ban memes or satire?
No blanket ban on memes or satire is established by the order. It records that a satirical meme filed with the plaint was not included in Annexure A because Ranaut was not pressing for its removal at that time. It also allows a website or account that is not primarily infringing to approach the court with an undertaking that it does not intend to infringe her personality rights; the court may then consider modifying the injunction.
Can newly discovered content be added?
The order permits Ranaut to notify the defendants about additional infringing URLs, accounts, channels or content discovered later, for removal or access disabling without starting a fresh proceeding. This mechanism does not convert the injunction into a general restriction on all content about her.

What the ruling does—and does not—decide
The court said the identified material supported a prima facie strong case, that the balance of convenience favored Ranaut, and that the apprehended harm might not be adequately compensated in money. These are interim assessments made while the suit remains pending, not a final adjudication of all claims or a general determination that every synthetic depiction of a public figure is unlawful.
