Start with the kind of replacement you actually need
“Similar” can mean two different things. A continuity substitute gives you the earlier chapter of the same series. It is the safest choice when characters, setting, controls, or story context matter. A play-style substitute gives you the activity you want right now, even when it comes from another series. It is often better when the delayed game is an original concept, when you do not care about its backstory, or when you want a different tone.

No. A delay changes the timing and the information available to a buyer; it does not guarantee quality. The reason for the delay, the revised date and the developer’s later updates may all matter, but the word “delayed” alone is not evidence that the finished game will meet expectations.

A study of 23,485 Steam games by Grewal, Lin, Doucet and Bezemer, published in 2022, reported that 48% had a delayed initial release. Among the games that delayed, the median delay was 14 days. Those figures describe the observed Steam sample and should not be treated as a forecast for one specific unreleased title, platform or publisher. They do show why a delay can be short in one case and much longer in another.

Should you cancel a preorder after a delay?
A delay does not automatically create a refund right. Your options depend on the storefront, the payment state and the edition you ordered. Before keeping or cancelling, check each item below:
- Record the revised release date. Save the latest date shown by the seller or platform, not an older date in an email or screenshot.
- Check whether payment has been taken. A pending authorization, an immediate charge and a charge at shipment can have different cancellation treatment.
- Check preload and early-access status. If preload or early access has begun, the storefront may apply different rules from an untouched preorder.
- Read the specific cancellation policy. Look at the platform and region tied to your order; a general retailer policy may not apply to a digital storefront.
- Re-evaluate the benefit you bought. Keep the order only if the edition, discount, physical allocation or access benefit still matters after the delay.
- Document the request. If you cancel, retain the confirmation number and the stated refund outcome.
Keep the preorder when the original value still holds
Keeping can make sense when the edition is difficult to replace, the discount is meaningful, a physical allocation matters, or an access benefit remains useful after the new date. Confirm that the seller will honor those terms and that the delay has not changed the platform or edition you actually want.
Cancel when uncertainty outweighs the benefit
Cancellation is rational when the revised timing no longer works, your hardware or region has changed, the money is needed for another purchase, or the preorder’s promised benefit is no longer relevant. Do not rely on a blanket assumption that every storefront will refund automatically; ask the seller under the policy attached to your order.
