Definition of Surface Mount Technology (SMT): How It Works and How It Differs from SMD and Through-Hole

Surface-mount technology (SMT) is a method of assembling electronic circuits in which components are mounted directly onto conductive pads on the surface of a printed circuit board (PCB), instead of having their wire leads pushed through drilled holes and soldered on the other side. The parts placed this way are called surface-mount devices (SMDs). In short, SMT is the assembly process, and an SMD is a component that the process attaches.

What surface mount technology means in practice

In an SMT board, each component sits on the top or bottom face of the PCB and is held by solder joints on its pads. There are no leads passing through the board, so the holes that through-hole parts require are not needed for those components. A board can use SMT for every part, for some parts, or for none, depending on the design.

SMT and SMD: the process and the part

The two terms are often used interchangeably, but they describe different things. SMT refers to the method, including the materials, equipment and steps used to attach components to the board. SMD refers to the component itself. A resistor, capacitor or integrated circuit in a surface-mount package is an SMD, and it is assembled using SMT. Writing “SMT components” is therefore a loose shorthand for “SMDs assembled by SMT.”

How an SMT assembly line works

A typical SMT sequence has three core stages, which the Surface Mount Process introductory resource describes as the standard line order:

  1. Solder paste printing. A paste of solder powder and flux is applied to the copper pads where components will sit.
  2. Component placement. Machines or operators position each component onto its paste-covered pads.
  3. Reflow. The assembly passes through a controlled heating process. The paste melts, and as it cools it forms the solder joints that give both the electrical and mechanical connection.

Automated optical inspection is commonly used after these stages as a quality check. The sources cited here do not establish that every production line follows exactly this order or uses the same inspection steps, so treat the sequence as the standard pattern rather than a fixed rule.

What SMT changes on the board

The ScienceDirect technical overview of SMT identifies several practical effects. These are general tendencies rather than guarantees for every design:

  • Smaller packages and denser layouts. Surface-mount parts can be smaller and placed closer together than many leaded parts, which can free up board area.
  • Simpler fabrication. Removing the need for component-lead holes simplifies drilling on the bare board.
  • Two-sided mounting. Components can be placed on either side of the board where the design and assembly process allow it.
  • Suitability for automation. Placement and reflow are highly mechanized, which is why SMT is closely associated with high-volume production.

None of these means an SMT design is automatically smaller or cheaper. Automation pays off mainly at production scale, and a low-volume or one-off board may cost more to assemble with SMT equipment than with hand methods.

Where through-hole technology still fits

Through-hole technology inserts component leads into drilled holes and solders them to pads on the far side, or through the board. Many parts are not suited to surface mounting, and some mechanical requirements favor leads that pass through the board. Boards that combine both methods are a normal design choice.

How to choose between SMT and through-hole

The choice depends on the design and the production plan. Check these points in order:

  • This Hot Air Rework Station Kit is covered by our exclusive 1-year USA technical support, with 24-hour assistance from our dedicated team. Note: This product is rated for 110-127V USA specifications. Do not connect this iron to a 220V power socket.
  • Component availability. Confirm whether the parts you need exist in a surface-mount package and whether they are suited to surface mounting.
  • Mechanical needs. Parts that carry high mechanical load or that must be held firmly through the board may need leads.
  • Board area. If space is tight, SMT usually offers more layout options.
  • Assembly volume and automation. Higher volumes justify automated placement and reflow. Low volumes may not.
  • Rework and repair. Plan for how the board will be serviced, because the cited sources do not compare repair ease across the two methods.

Many practical boards use SMT for dense, small parts and through-hole for connectors or large components, which is why mixed-technology assembly is so common.

Practising and repairing SMD work

Readers who want to learn surface-mount work can start with soldering and desoldering practice. The Bharat Skills vocational lesson on Electronics Mechanic—Surface Mount Technology, identified as 2022 material from the Government of India’s skills programme, covers SMD soldering and desoldering as a training task. A 2009 arXiv paper, “Reflow Soldering of Surface Mount Electronic Components in a Laboratory,” describes laboratory reflow soldering and surface-mount prototyping. Both show the skill categories involved; neither is a buying guide, and neither specifies tools or equipment models.
