A subscriber identity module (SIM) is the identity component of mobile service. It holds the subscriber’s International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and the security parameters that a mobile network uses to authenticate that subscriber. The GSM Association (GSMA) puts it this way in its TS.34 glossary: a “module provided by the Mobile Network Operator containing the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) and the security parameters used to authenticate the (U)SIM with the Network.”
In everyday speech, “SIM” usually means the small removable card in a phone. Technically, the identity application and the card it runs on are separate things, and the difference explains most of the related acronyms.

What a SIM does
The SIM’s job is identification and authentication. The network needs a way to know which subscriber a device belongs to and to verify that claim. The SIM supplies the subscriber identity (the IMSI) and the security parameters that make that verification possible. In 3GPP’s wording (TS 22.101, clause 11a.1, a January 2004 excerpt), “the identity of a subscriber is encoded in a identity module application which is contained on a UICC or on a GSM SIM card.”
That 2004 text is useful for foundational terminology. It is not a description of every network implementation in use today.

SIM, SIM card, UICC: the layers
The terms sit at different layers, so they are not interchangeable.
| Term | Layer | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| SIM | Identity module / application | Per GSMA, a module with the IMSI and security parameters used to authenticate with the network. |
| USIM | Application | Universal Subscriber Identity Module. 3GPP lists it as distinct from the GSM SIM. |
| ISIM | Application | IP Multimedia Services Identity Module. 3GPP lists it as a distinct identity-module application for IMS services. |
| UICC | Smart-card platform | GSMA: “The smart card used by a mobile network to authenticate devices for connection to the mobile network and access to network services.” |
| SIM card | Everyday term | Usually the removable physical card. 3GPP identifies the GSM SIM card or UICC as a removable component of user equipment. |
In short, the UICC is the platform, and the SIM or USIM is an application associated with it. Calling the whole card a “SIM” is common and usually harmless, but it blurs this distinction.

SIM versus eSIM
A physical SIM card is removable. An eSIM is different in form. ITU-T Recommendation E.118 (09/2025) describes the ICCID as identifying either a UICC or a profile in an eUICC, which is an embedded UICC. So an eSIM context involves a profile in an embedded UICC rather than a card you swap by hand. The two are not physically identical, even though both serve the same purpose of identifying a subscriber to the network.

IMSI and ICCID are not the same identifier
- IMSI (International Mobile Subscriber Identity) is subscriber identity information that GSMA names as contained in the SIM, used together with authentication parameters.
- ICCID (integrated circuit card identifier, also called the SIM serial number) identifies the card or eUICC profile. ITU-T E.118 (09/2025) says it identifies a UICC or an eUICC profile.
Put simply, the IMSI relates to the subscriber’s identity on the network, while the ICCID identifies the card or profile itself.
