Quad High Definition (QHD) means a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels, also called 1440p. It has about 3.69 million pixels, which is four times the pixel count of standard 720p HD. QHD is not the same as consumer 4K, which is 3840 × 2160.
The dimensions behind QHD
QHD is usually defined as 2560 × 1440 pixels. Android’s developer documentation for the CameraX Quality API describes QHD video as “1440p” and states that this quality usually corresponds to a resolution of 2560 × 1440 pixels. The same documentation separates QHD from UHD, which it associates with 2160p, usually 3840 × 2160.

Multiplying the two dimensions gives 2560 × 1440 = 3,686,400 total pixels, or about 3.69 megapixels. A 2013-era California Energy Commission document reports the same rounded figure of 3.69 MP for QHD at 2560 × 1440.

The word “quad” refers to the total number of pixels, not to a doubling of one dimension alone. The standard HD reference is 1280 × 720, which has 921,600 pixels. QHD doubles both the width and the height, so the total pixel count is multiplied by four:

- QHD Resolution (2560 x 1440) has 1.7 times the pixel density of Full HD for incredibly detailed pinsharp images
- HDR10 provides brighter highlights and nuanced shadow for added depth - making every scene feel more vivid and realistic
- The 180Hz refresh rate minimizes lag for gameplay with ultra-smooth action. Plus, the 1ms response time helps capture your moves in real-time, allowing you to react fast for gaming precision
- AMD FreeSync reduces choppiness, screen lag and image tearing, ensuring that your fast-paced, complex in-game action is stable with minimal stutter
- Ergonomic stand allows for tilt, pivot and height adjustments to maximize gaming comfort
- 1280 × 720 = 921,600 pixels (720p HD)
- 2560 × 1440 = 3,686,400 pixels (QHD, 1440p)
- 3,686,400 ÷ 921,600 = 4
HP’s consumer explainer describes this same relationship between QHD and HD. A useful way to picture it is a grid: each side of the screen has twice as many pixels, so the grid has four times as many cells.
QHD compared with other common resolutions
| Term | Common dimensions | Pixels (total) | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| HD (720p) | 1280 × 720 | 921,600 | Reference point for the “quad” comparison. |
| Full HD (1080p) | 1920 × 1080 | 2,073,600 | Lower resolution than QHD, per the California Energy Commission material. |
| QHD / 1440p | 2560 × 1440 | 3,686,400 | About 3.69 million pixels; the subject of this article. |
| UHD / consumer 4K | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 | Android documentation distinguishes this from QHD. |
| “2K” (consumer usage) | Not precise | Not stated | Often used loosely for QHD; cinematic 2K is 2048 × 1080 according to LG. |
The 3,686,400 figure for QHD is the multiplication of 2560 by 1440. Samsung Business Insights (2026) presents the same comparison in its guide to monitor resolutions at https://insights.samsung.com/2026/06/16/qhd-vs-fhd-vs-4k-which-monitor-resolution-is-right-for-your-business/.

- Quality Visuals: The KG271U 27" IPS monitor with 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution in a 16:9 aspect ratio presents stunning, high-quality images with excellent detail. The zero-frame design does away with the thick frames found on conventional monitors freeing up precious screen space.
- AMD FreeSync Technology: Say “goodbye” to stuttering and tearing. With AMD FreeSync, the monitor’s frames are synced with the graphics card’s frames, which eliminates screen tearing and provide the smoothest gaming experience.
- Up to 180Hz: The 180Hz refresh rate speeds up the frames per second to deliver an ultra-smooth 2D motion scene. With a rapid refresh rate of up to 180Hz, Acer Gaming Monitors shorten the time it takes for frame rendering, lower input lag and provide gamers an excellent in-game experience.
- Responsive!!: Up to 0.5ms GTG (Gray to Gray) response time enhanced gamers’ in-game experience. No matter the fast-moving action or any dramatic transitions will be all rendered smoothly without the annoying effects of smearing or ghosting with KG271U Gaming Monitor.
- New Depths of Color Accuracy: is monitor is ideal for color-critical projects producing accurate colors, supporting DCI-P3 95%. An amazing monitor for graphic designers, photographers, and film editors.
QHD is not 4K
QHD is sometimes confused with 4K because both sit above Full HD. They are different standards. Consumer 4K (UHD) is 3840 × 2160, which has more than twice the pixels of QHD. Describing a 1440p screen as 4K is inaccurate and will mislead buyers who compare specifications.
The “2K” label and why it causes confusion
Retailers and some manufacturers call QHD “2K” because the horizontal pixel count is roughly 2,500. That usage is loose. LG notes that QHD is often called 2K, while cinematic 2K is 2048 × 1080, a different format. When precision matters, use “QHD” or “1440p.”

Whether a device can drive QHD
Being able to display 2560 × 1440 depends on the specific device. Support for a particular resolution, refresh rate, and color depth varies by product. Intel recommends checking the display documentation or asking the manufacturer which modes are supported. A monitor’s listing, a laptop’s specification sheet, or the graphics driver’s display settings are the places to confirm this before buying or configuring a system. A QHD monitor is normally described as a 2560 × 1440 display, but the refresh rate it supports at that resolution should be verified against the exact model.
How the term is used in searches
Readers search for the term in several forms, including “What does Quad HD really mean?”, “What is a QHD monitor?”, “Is QHD the same as 1440p or 2K?”, and questions about whether specific graphics chips support QHD. In headings and product text, “QHD,” “Quad High Definition,” and “1440p” all refer to the same resolution, while “2K” should be avoided unless the surrounding text explains the loose usage.
