A personal area network (PAN) is a network that connects devices in the immediate personal operating space around one person. A wireless personal area network (WPAN) is the wireless form of that arrangement. A phone talking to a Bluetooth headset is the most familiar example.
PAN vs. WPAN: the terminology
PAN is the broad idea: linking nearby devices associated with one individual. WPAN is the wireless implementation. The IEEE 802.15 Working Group describes its WPAN work as defining wireless connectivity for fixed, portable and moving devices within or entering a personal operating space.

Two cautions keep the definition accurate. Not every PAN is Bluetooth, and not every PAN has to be wireless. Bluetooth is one recognizable way to build one.

The IEEE 802.15 Working Group FAQ says a personal operating space typically extends up to 10 meters in all directions. Treat that as IEEE’s typical description, not a guaranteed range for every PAN technology. Actual reach depends on the technology and how it is deployed. #1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Technologies that form a PAN
Bluetooth
The Bluetooth SIG’s Personal Area Networking Profile 1.0 page says: “The Personal Area Networking (PAN) Profile describe how two or more Bluetooth enabled devices can form an ad-hoc network and how the same mechanism can be used to access a remote network through a network access point.” So Bluetooth devices can network with each other directly, or reach a wider network through an access point.
IEEE 802.15.4
The IEEE Standards Association catalog describes IEEE 802.15.4 as covering low-data-rate, low-power, low-complexity short-range radio connectivity for WPANs. It specifies the physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC) layers for fixed, portable and moving devices with limited battery requirements.

- Dual-band Wi-Fi with 5 GHz speeds up to 867 Mbps and 2.4 GHz speeds up to 300 Mbps, delivering 1200 Mbps of total bandwidth¹. Dual-band routers do not support 6 GHz. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- Covers up to 1,000 sq. ft. with four external antennas for stable wireless connections and optimal coverage.
- Supports IGMP Proxy/Snooping, Bridge and Tag VLAN to optimize IPTV streaming
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
- Advanced Security with WPA3 - The latest Wi-Fi security protocol, WPA3, brings new capabilities to improve cybersecurity in personal networks
Examples
- Phone and Bluetooth headset: a simple illustration of Bluetooth devices forming an ad-hoc network. It is an example, not a required setup.
- Mobile workers and medical sensing: both appear as applications in the IEEE 802.15 FAQ.
PAN compared with LAN and WAN
| Term | Scope | Wireless? | Standards or technology mentioned |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAN | One person’s nearby devices | Not necessarily | Varies |
| WPAN | Same scope, wireless link | Yes | Bluetooth PAN Profile; IEEE 802.15.4 |
| LAN | A broader local site | Either | Not covered by the sources here |
| WAN | A broader geographic area | Either | Not covered by the sources here |
The difference is scale and purpose. A PAN centers on one person, while LANs and WANs serve wider local or geographic areas. No source here sets a universal numeric boundary between PAN, LAN and WAN, so treat any hard cutoff you see elsewhere with caution.
