Definition of Networked Music Player: What It Is and How It Works

A networked music player is an audio device that connects to a home network, finds music held by another device such as a PC or network-attached storage (NAS) drive, and plays it. The term describes a function and a product category, not a single standard. Two players that both count as networked music players can differ in which sources they reach, which audio formats they accept, and whether they follow the DLNA family of standards.

What the term means in practice

The defining feature is that the player does not need the music stored inside it. It reaches out over the network to media that another device makes available, then plays that media through its own amplifier and speakers or through its outputs to a separate hi-fi system.

The clearest technical description comes from ISO/IEC 29341-20-12:2017, published in September 2017, which specifies the UPnP ContentDirectory service. In that model, a MediaServer holds content that another device can browse and select, and the controlling device can cause an appropriate rendering device, such as an audio player, to play the chosen item.

The roles behind a networked player

Networked audio is easier to understand when you separate the jobs involved. Microsoft’s UPnP Media Connect glossary (last updated April 23, 2024) maps the DLNA device classes onto UPnP device types:

Role DLNA class UPnP device type What it does
Source (server) Digital Media Server MediaServer Stores music and makes it browsable on the network, typically on a PC or NAS
Controller Digital Media Controller Control point Asks a renderer to start streaming from a server
Player (renderer) Digital Media Renderer MediaRenderer Receives the stream and produces sound

One detail often causes confusion. In DLNA terminology, a Digital Media Player is a UPnP control point, not the speaker or audio appliance that produces sound. So the word “player” in that class name does not automatically mean a standalone networked music player. When you read a spec sheet, look for the renderer role, not the word “player” alone.

Roles can be split across devices or combined in one box. Manufacturer manuals for the Marantz NA8005 describe the player’s DLNA roles, while the Denon DNP-730AE manual describes it as a device that plays files from network sources. Whether a particular model acts as only a renderer, or also as a controller or server, is something to confirm in that model’s documentation.

Where the music comes from

The sources a player can use are what make it useful, and they vary by model. Examples from manufacturer documentation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Denon DNP-730AE: plays music files and playlists stored on a PC or on a DLNA-supporting NAS.
  • Marantz NA8005: plays music from PCs, NAS devices, smartphones, and portable audio players.

These are examples from two particular models, not a feature list for the category. A player that supports DLNA playback from a PC may not support phone-based streaming, and the reverse is also true.

DLNA is a family of certified interoperability, not a guarantee

Sony Support’s “What is DLNA technology?” page (modified February 1, 2024) describes DLNA as a home networking capability for sharing music, video, and pictures among compatible devices. It states the idea directly: “It allows music, video, and picture sharing among compatible devices through a wireless home network.” The same page cautions that not all products are DLNA certified.

In practice, a network connection on a box does not prove that it will talk to your server. Check whether the product is listed as DLNA certified, and check that your server software is on the list of supported servers in the manual.

Audio formats and playback limits

Format support is listed per model. For example, Sony’s help guide for the CMT-SX7/SX7B home audio system lists MP3, Linear PCM, WMA, AAC, WAV, FLAC, ALAC, and AIFF among supported formats. The same guide states that playback of all files is not guaranteed, even when a file’s format and bit rate appear to be supported.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you assume a library will play, test a small set of files that cover each format and bit rate you use. Playback issues often come from a combination of format, bit rate, and server software rather than from the format name alone.

Checklist before you buy or set up a networked music player

  • Confirm which sources the exact model supports: PC, NAS, smartphone, or portable player.
  • Check whether the model is DLNA certified and which server software it works with.
  • Read the format and bit-rate list for that model, not for the category.
  • Confirm the connection type (wired or wireless) and the outputs needed to reach your existing amplifier or speakers.
  • Test a representative set of your own files before relying on the setup.

Searching for one

“Network music player” and “network audio player” are the most direct search phrases for this product category. Manufacturer materials use natural wording as well, such as “Playing back files stored on a PC and NAS” (a Denon manual page title) and “You can listen to music stored in a DLNA server (PC, etc.) on a home network using the home audio system” (a Sony help guide). Use those phrases to find model documentation, then judge each product by its listed features rather than by its category label.
