Multimedia over coax means carrying multimedia or network data, such as video, audio, voice and internet traffic, over coaxial cable. In home networking the phrase almost always points to MoCA, the technology standardized by the Multimedia over Coax Alliance. MoCA uses coax wiring already in the walls as a wired network path between network equipment and rooms.

The definition, and where the term comes from

There are two layers of meaning, and it helps to keep them apart.

  • Multimedia over coax (descriptive phrase): any system that carries multimedia or IP communications over coaxial cable.
  • MoCA (named technology): the Alliance’s standards family and certification program for doing this over coax.

ITU-T Recommendation J.1 (01/2024) defines “multimedia” as the combination of multiple forms of media, including audio, video, text, graphics, fax and telephony. Under “home network coaxial modem” it gives this wording: “A modem for IP communications modulated over Coaxial cable for communications within the home, e.g. MOCA, HPNA over Coax.” So MoCA is the best-known example of the concept, not the only one. HPNA over coax is the other example the ITU names.

#1 Best Overall
Hitron MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter (2-Pack) NOT a Modem - Extends Internet Over Coax | NOT for Satellite/AT&T U-Verse | Works Cable/Fiber/DSL | Requires Connected Coax
  • ⚠️ NETWORK ADAPTER - NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER: This device extends your EXISTING internet through your home's coax cables. It works WITH your current modem and router, not as a replacement. Connects to your router via Ethernet, then uses coax outlets to create wired network connections in other rooms. Perfect for streaming, gaming, and home offices where you need reliable wired connections.
  • 🚨 DOES NOT WORK WITH AT&T U-VERSE OR SATELLITE TV WIRING: ❌ AT&T U-verse uses HPNA technology which conflicts with MoCA - this product will NOT work with U-verse service. ❌ If your home was EVER wired for DirecTV, Dish Network, or AT&T U-verse satellite service, MoCA will HIGHLY LIKELY NOT WORK. Satellite/U-verse installations reconfigure coax wiring by isolating outlets or disconnecting them from the main splitter. Even if you no longer have these services, the wiring changes usually remain.
  • ✅ COMPATIBLE INTERNET SERVICES - IF COAX IS PROPERLY WIRED: Works with Cable internet (Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, Optimum, Mediacom), Fiber internet (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, Frontier Fiber), DSL, or other non-U-verse services. Your internet type doesn't matter - what matters is that your coax outlets are interconnected through a main splitter (standard cable TV configuration, NOT satellite or U-verse wiring). Delivers up to 1 Gbps speeds.
  • 🔌 REQUIRED: INTERCONNECTED COAX NETWORK: All coax outlets must connect to a central splitter for MoCA to work. ❌ WILL NOT WORK with: AT&T U-verse service (uses conflicting HPNA technology), Satellite TV wiring (DirecTV/Dish/U-verse satellite), isolated coax runs not connected to a splitter, or homes with no coax outlets. ✅ COMPATIBILITY TEST: If you previously had traditional cable TV service and could watch TV from multiple room outlets, your wiring is likely compatible.
  • 🔧 POE FILTER - CABLE INTERNET USERS ONLY: If you have cable internet with a DOCSIS 3.1 or 4.0 "high-split" modem (common with Comcast/Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox), you MUST install a Point of Entry (POE) filter at your main cable entry point or MoCA will NOT function properly. The filter prevents interference from high-split cable modems. Fiber internet and DSL users do NOT need a POE filter. U-verse users cannot use this product regardless of filter.

How it works in plain terms

Most homes already have coax run to several rooms for cable TV or broadband. A MoCA device modulates network data onto that cable, and another MoCA device at the far end turns it back into ordinary Ethernet. The data travels in its own frequency band. The Alliance lists an operating range of 400–1675 MHz for MoCA Home 2.5. It says MoCA is designed to co-exist with legacy services such as TV, DOCSIS and cellular (4G/5G) technologies. That is the Alliance’s statement, not an independent compatibility test.

MoCA Home versus MoCA Access

Variant Purpose Typical setting
MoCA Home Networking inside one premises, such as Wi-Fi backhaul or wiring a device where Ethernet is not available Houses and apartments
MoCA Access Delivering broadband over existing coax within a building Multi-dwelling units, hotels, resorts (per the Alliance and InCoax Networks)

A consumer adapter pair belongs to the Home model. Access is a building-level deployment, usually planned by an installer or operator.

Rank #2
ScreenBeam ECB6250K02 Network Adapter Starter Kit MoCA 2.5 - Faster
  • Faster than Wi-Fi: Use your home’s coax cables for internet speeds up to 1 Gbps, perhaps outpacing Wi-Fi. With multiple adapters and a native MoCA router, MoCA speeds can reach 2.5 Gbps. Speed may vary due to cable quality and other MoCA devices.
  • Get Better Speeds and Bandwidth: The 1Gbps ethernet port and network card for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and working from home. If your devices don't have a 1Gbps Network Card, it's backwards compatible with 10/100 Mbps network devices.
  • Skip the Wi-Fi! Use existing coax cables for wired Ethernet connections in your home. MoCA Adapter 2.5 delivers faster, more reliable speeds than Wi-Fi for up to 16 nodes on one network. You can also use these to connect remote Wi-Fi access points.
  • Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ for non-MoCA routers. Most FiOS routers have MoCA built-in. Connect ECBs in each room with coax for wired access and switches to the ECBs for more ethernet connections.
  • Device Compatibility: This MoCA adapter for ethernet over coax works with most devices and routers with an ethernet port. However, some DOCSIS 3.1 modems might conflict (frequency overlap) and cause random disconnects. Check with your ISP for a fix.

Published performance figures

These are the Multimedia over Coax Alliance’s own figures for MoCA Home 2.5, taken from its current technical overview and accessed in 2026:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • 2.5 Gbps MAC throughput. The Alliance’s overview also says actual data rates reach up to 2.5 Gbps.
  • Under 5 ms latency.
  • 400–1675 MHz operating range.

These are capability figures, not a promise for any particular home. Wiring quality, splitters, the number of devices and the Ethernet ports on the endpoints all affect what you measure. A separate TiVo support article cites 450 Mbit/s net TCP throughput for its own MoCA description. That reflects an older context and should not be read as the current maximum or applied to all MoCA products.

Hitron HTEM5 MoCA 2.5 Network Adapter (2-Pack) - Extends Network via Coax | NOT a Modem/Router/WiFi | Requires Cable TV Wiring (NOT Satellite) | Works with Cable & Most Fiber (NOT AT&T) | 2.5 Gbps
  • ⚠️ NOT A MODEM OR ROUTER - NETWORK ADAPTER ONLY: This is a MoCA network adapter that extends your existing network using coax cables. It does NOT provide internet service and does NOT replace your modem or router. You must have an existing internet connection and router to use this product.
  • ⚠️ SATELLITE WIRING INCOMPATIBILITY: If your home was ever wired for satellite TV (DirecTV, Dish Network), the satellite company likely cut or disconnected your in-home coax network. This product will NOT work with cut or isolated coax wiring. Before purchasing, verify your coax outlets are interconnected—if you previously had satellite service, ask your current provider if they reconnected your home’s coax network.
  • ❌ NOT COMPATIBLE WITH AT&T FIBER: AT&T Fiber’s implementation causes signal interference with MoCA. Works with all other internet types (Cable, Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.) as long as your home has an active, interconnected coax network.
  • ✅ WIRING REQUIREMENTS - VERIFY BEFORE BUYING: Requires coax outlets (round screw-on connectors, NOT satellite F-connectors) in multiple rooms that connect to a main splitter. Does NOT work with isolated coax runs, phone lines (RJ11), or Ethernet cables. Check that your coax outlets are part of an interconnected network, not separate isolated runs
  • EXTENDS YOUR NETWORK: Converts your home’s coax cable wiring into high-speed ethernet connections. Perfect for connecting devices in rooms far from your router without running new cables. Achieves up to 2.5 Gbps speeds over existing coax. WORKS WITH: Cable internet (Xfinity, Spectrum, Cox, etc.) and most fiber services (Verizon Fios, Google Fiber, etc.).

When it makes sense

MoCA fits best when usable coax already reaches the places you need a wired connection and running Ethernet would be hard. TiVo presents it as an option for exactly that case. To compare it with alternatives, look at:

  • which physical path exists: coax, Ethernet or only Wi-Fi;
  • whether a wired run is already in place;
  • equipment cost and compatibility;
  • performance measured at the actual endpoints.

The Alliance promotes MoCA as a Wi-Fi backhaul, but no source here shows that it universally beats Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Existing Ethernet is usually the simpler choice.

ScreenBeam ECB7250K02 Network Adapter Starter Kit Bonded MoCA 2.5 - Fastest
  • Faster than Wi-Fi: The ECB7250 uses your home's coax cables to deliver internet speeds up to 2.5 Gbps, surpassing Wi-Fi speeds. Actual speeds can be affected by various factors like cable quality and other MoCA devices on the network.
  • Get the Best Speeds and Bandwidth: The 2.5Gbps network ethernet port for high-speed internet is ideal for 4K streaming, gaming, and remote work. It's backwards compatible with 10/100/1000 Mbps Ethernet connections.
  • Check MoCA Compatibility: You will need 1 ECB or a MoCA compatible router or 2+ ECBs for non-MoCA routers.

Before you buy anything

  1. Check your gateway. Some gateways and extenders already include MoCA, and the Alliance’s certified-products list covers gateways and extenders as well as adapters.
  2. Confirm the coax outlets are connected to the same coax network. Outlets separated by an unsuitable splitter or a disconnected run will not link up.
  3. Check your provider’s setup. TV or broadband equipment may impose requirements.
  4. Add accessories only if needed. Splitters or point-of-entry filters matter in some installations, not all. The Alliance points to SCTE 235 operational practice for DOCSIS coexistence.
  5. Choose the right product class. For a typical home this is a MoCA 2.5 Ethernet-to-coax adapter pair. Certification means the product was tested for compliance and interoperability under the Alliance’s program. It does not mean any given model suits your layout.
