Definition of Modular Electrical Power: What the Term Means and Where It Applies

Modular electrical power is a design approach, not a formally standardized term. Electrical power equipment or a power system is built from separable modules or subsystems with defined interfaces, so the parts can be configured, expanded, serviced or replaced. The standards inspected for this article do not define the exact phrase. What it means in practice depends on the scale you are talking about.

The working definition

Three ideas make a power arrangement modular:

  • Separable units. The system is divided into distinct modules, such as converters, cabinets, power units or whole subsystems.
  • Defined interfaces. Electrical, mechanical and control connections between modules are specified. This is what lets a module be added or swapped without redesigning everything else.
  • A purpose. Modularity is usually chosen to allow configuration, expansion, servicing or replacement.

These benefits are possible, not automatic. Whether you get them depends on the design, the interfaces, the operating conditions and the maintenance policy. Modular construction does not by itself guarantee higher reliability, lower cost, better efficiency or hot-swap capability.

Four scales where the phrase appears

People use the same words for very different things. Naming the scale first avoids most confusion.

Scale What “modular” looks like Relevant standards context
Component or power supply A modular electronic power supply, where output connections or functional blocks are separable. This is the most familiar, equipment-level example. A technical overview, “Modular Power Supplies: Key Features”, hosted by Newark, covers the category; its publication date is not established. Depends on the product class and jurisdiction
UPS An uninterruptible power supply made of interconnected or independent units. IEC 62040-1:2017 covers UPS for low-voltage distribution and explicitly includes systems of interconnected or independent units, subject to the manufacturer’s installation, operating and maintenance instructions.
Installation A prefabricated, enclosed substation delivered as a unit. IEC 62271-202:2022 covers enclosed high-voltage prefabricated substations on cable-connected AC networks up to and including 52 kV.
Overall power system Dividing a whole power system into defined subsystems and electrical supply architectures. IEC 63046:2020 covers the overall electrical power system of nuclear power plants. ISO/TS 81346-101:2025 gives guidelines for structuring and designating power supply systems.

These are related examples, not interchangeable categories. A modular power supply inside a PC says little about how a modular UPS or a plant-wide power architecture behaves.

What the standards do and do not tell you

IEC 63046:2020

The International Electrotechnical Commission states that this standard “provides requirements and recommendations for the overall Electrical Power System” of nuclear power plants, including interruptible and uninterruptible systems. It stresses that requirements derived from plant safety goals must come first, before the architecture and electrical supply subsystems are defined. It was published on 2020-10-20. Its scope is nuclear, so it is not a general definition of modular power. It does show that how a system is divided into subsystems follows from requirements and not from a preference for modules.

ISO/TS 81346-101:2025

This technical specification applies the ISO/IEC 81346 reference designation system to power supply systems. It supports consistent structuring and naming of the parts. It is not a product standard and does not define “modular electrical power”. ISO lists it as published in January 2025 and under revision, so check its current status before relying on it for a project.

  • Fully Modular: Reliable and efficient low-noise power supply with fully modular cabling, so you only have to connect the cables your system needs.
  • Cybenetics Gold-Certified: Rated for up to 91% efficiency, resulting in lower power consumption, less noise, and cooler temperatures.
  • ATX 3.1 Compliant: Compliant with the ATX 3.1 power standard from Intel, supporting PCIe 5.1 and resisting transient power spikes.
  • Native 12V-2x6 Connector: Ensures compatibility with the latest graphics cards with a direct GPU to PSU connection – no adapter necessary.
  • Embossed Cables with Low-Profile Combs: Sleek, ultra-flexible embossed cables look great and make installing and connecting the RMx a breeze.

IEC 62040-1:2017

The UPS safety standard shows that multi-unit organization is a recognized form within a specific safety scope. The scope is low-voltage distribution UPS. The standard’s coverage of interconnected units does not make every modular design compliant. Compliance follows from the equipment and its instructions.

IEC 62271-202:2022

This standard sets service, structural and test requirements for enclosed high-voltage prefabricated substations. The IEC listing gives the date as 2022-06-22, and the retrieved copy includes the 2023 corrigendum. The 52 kV figure is a boundary of this standard’s scope. It is not an industry statistic and says nothing about modular power in general.

Modular power supply versus modular power system

A modular power supply is a product where the building blocks, often the cables or output stages, can be configured. A modular power system is an architecture in which capacity, protection, distribution or backup are split into units that can be combined. The first is a purchasing choice for one device. The second is an engineering decision that affects capacity planning, fault behavior and maintenance across a whole facility. Neither says anything about safety certification.

How to compare a modular design with a conventional one

Compare the two for the same application and the same load assumptions. The sources inspected give no universal numerical rankings on any of these axes, so each has to be assessed for the specific equipment.

  • Sizing and expansion: Can capacity be added in steps, and what are the limits on how many units can be combined?
  • Maintainability: Can a module be replaced, and does that require shutting down the load?
  • Redundancy and fault isolation: Redundancy needs deliberate design, such as spare capacity and suitable control and protection. It does not follow from modular construction alone.
  • Interfaces and compatibility: Are the connections, communications and ratings defined well enough to mix or replace modules over time?
  • Footprint and environment: Check space, ventilation, ambient limits and enclosure requirements.
  • Efficiency across the load range: Check efficiency at the loads you expect, not only at the rated maximum.
  • Total cost: Include integration and lifecycle costs, not only the purchase price.

“Modular” is not a safety claim

The word on a datasheet does not establish compliance. Before relying on a modular product or system, identify the equipment class, the applicable standard and its current edition, the jurisdiction’s adopted codes, the equipment ratings and the installation conditions. Specification and installation of power equipment belong with a qualified engineer or electrician.
