It pairs a 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with ProMotion, the A15 Bionic chip, and a three-lens 12 MP rear camera system. It uses a Lightning connector and supports MagSafe charging.
What the name means
Apple’s naming separates the iPhone 13 family into tiers. “Pro” marks the models with the more advanced camera hardware, display, and chip features in that generation. “Max” marks the largest screen within the Pro tier. So the iPhone 13 Pro Max is the 2021 Pro model with the biggest display, not a separate product line and not a successor to a 2020 model.

Apple’s technical specification page for the device lists the figures below. Treat them as manufacturer specifications for the model as sold, not as results from independent testing.

What the display means in practice
The 6.7-inch measurement is the diagonal of the screen. The ProMotion feature lets the display change its refresh rate between 10 Hz and 120 Hz, according to Apple’s September 2021 launch announcement. Higher refresh rates make scrolling and animation look smoother, while lower rates can save power when the content does not need them. The screen is OLED, so black areas are rendered by switching pixels off rather than by backlighting.

What the camera system includes
The rear system has three 12 MP lenses. The Ultra Wide lens covers the widest field of view, the Wide lens is the main camera, and the Telephoto lens provides the optical zoom. Apple also lists macro photography, Apple ProRAW, Cinematic mode, and ProRes video for this model.
Storage affects video. ProRes recording is limited to 1080p at 30 fps on the 128 GB model, while larger storage tiers record ProRes up to 4K at 30 fps. If you plan to shoot ProRes footage, the storage tier matters more than the camera hardware.

Charging and connector
The phone uses a Lightning connector, not USB-C. It supports MagSafe, which uses magnets to align a compatible charger, at up to 15 W. Standard Qi wireless charging is rated up to 7.5 W. Apple’s listed contents for the box should be checked at purchase, since the presence of a charger or adapter in the box is not something the specifications settle.
Water resistance: what IP68 does and does not cover
IP68 is a laboratory test rating under IEC 60529. Apple states the phone can withstand submersion up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under those test conditions. The rating is a starting point, not a warranty for a used or damaged device. Seals can degrade with age, drops, and repairs, and Apple’s repair coverage does not extend this rating to a phone that has been opened or damaged. Avoid treating the rating as permission to use the phone in saltwater, hot water, or pressurized water.

Battery figures
The playback times above are Apple’s ratings for the model, and they depend on usage and battery condition. Apple’s launch announcement also said the iPhone 13 Pro Max would last up to two and a half hours longer in a day than the iPhone 12 Pro Max. That is Apple’s own comparison from 2021, not a current guarantee for any particular unit. On an individual phone, Settings > Battery > Battery Health (labeled Battery Health & Charging on newer iOS versions) shows the maximum capacity relative to new.
Neural Engine performance
Apple’s launch material cites 15.8 trillion operations per second for the 16-core Neural Engine. That is a manufacturer figure from the 2021 announcement and was not an independently measured benchmark, so it is best read as a description of the chip’s design target.

Checking a specific iPhone 13 Pro Max before you buy
- Model and storage: Open Settings > General > About. The model name should read iPhone 13 Pro Max, and the Capacity line should match the tier you are paying for.
- Battery condition: Check the maximum capacity in Battery Health. A used or refurbished phone with a degraded battery will not match the playback ratings above.
- Condition and history: Ask whether the phone has had screen or back-glass replacement, since that can affect water resistance and display quality.
- Software support: The launch operating system was iOS 15. Apple’s current iOS compatibility information is the authority for which iOS versions the model receives today. This article does not establish the latest iOS release supported as of October 2026, so check Apple’s materials before buying.
- Accessories: Confirm that any MagSafe charger or case is listed for the iPhone 13 Pro Max specifically. Charging speed depends on the charger’s own rating.
Sources for these figures
The specifications come from Apple’s official technical specification page for the iPhone 13 Pro Max. The launch date, the 10–120 Hz refresh description, the Neural Engine figure, and the battery comparison come from Apple’s September 14, 2021 launch announcement on Apple Newsroom. Apple’s own wording in that announcement describes the lineup as “the most pro iPhone lineup ever,” which is promotional language rather than a measured claim.
