Definition of Internal Hard Disk: What It Is and How It Works

An internal hard disk is a non-volatile storage device installed inside a computer. It stores data magnetically on rigid spinning platters, and mechanical read/write heads access that data. Because it is non-volatile, the data stays when the power is off. The word “internal” describes where the drive sits, not what technology it uses.

What the term means, word by word

TechTarget’s definition (by Cameron Hashemi-Pour, Alexander S. Gillis and Sarah Wilson, published 2025) begins: “A computer hard disk drive (HDD) is a non-volatile data storage device.” An internal hard disk is that device fitted inside a computer or storage system.

  • Internal hard disk / internal HDD: a magnetic hard disk drive installed inside a computer or storage device.
  • Hard disk: strictly, the rigid magnetic disk (platter) that holds the data. In everyday speech it usually means the whole packaged drive.
  • Hard disk drive (HDD): the complete assembly of platters, heads, motors and electronics that reads and writes the disk.
  • External hard drive: an HDD housed outside the computer and connected through an external interface. The drive technology is the same; only placement and connection differ.
  • SSD: a solid-state drive that uses semiconductor memory instead of spinning magnetic disks.

How an internal hard disk works

A motor spins one or more rigid platters coated with magnetic material. A second motor and an actuator arm move read/write heads across tracks on the platter surfaces. The heads write data by changing the magnetic state of the surface and read it back by sensing that state. The platters and heads are sealed inside the drive enclosure.

What it is used for

An internal HDD provides long-term storage for the operating system, installed programs and personal files. It is not the same as RAM. RAM is volatile working memory that holds what the computer is using right now and loses its contents when power is cut.

Internal hard disk vs. SSD

Both HDDs and SSDs offer non-volatile storage, but they are built differently. According to IBM, an HDD is a magnetic, mechanical device, while an SSD uses semiconductor (flash) memory with no rotating platters or mechanical read/write head.

Aspect Internal HDD SSD
Storage mechanism Magnetic recording on spinning platters Semiconductor (flash) memory
Moving parts Yes: platters, actuator, heads No
Speed Slower read/write and boot times, per IBM’s comparison Faster read/write and boot times, per IBM’s comparison
Cost per gigabyte Lower, per IBM’s comparison Higher

These are general characteristics. Actual speed and price vary by product, so no single figure applies to every drive.

Sizes and compatibility

TechTarget lists 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch as common HDD form factors. The nominal size relates to platter diameter, not the full enclosure. Laptops generally use the smaller size and desktops the larger one, but a size label alone does not guarantee a fit. Before choosing a drive, check two things on your computer:

  • The drive bay or mounting space available for that form factor.
  • The interface the computer supports. Seagate’s data sheet, for example, documents an internal 3.5-inch SATA desktop HDD category for desktop systems.

This article is a general definition, not a guide to a specific machine. Compatibility with a particular computer depends on its model, interface and free bay. Once those match, compare capacity and the intended workload.
