Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →High-resolution audio, in common usage, is a digital format whose sample rate, bit depth, or both exceed the CD baseline of 44.1 kHz/16-bit PCM. That is the short answer. The longer answer is that no single threshold applies everywhere: standards bodies, logo programs and preservation archives each set their own figures for their own purposes. And a file’s specification tells you how the audio is delivered, not what was recorded or how carefully it was mastered.
Start with CD as the reference point
CD audio is PCM at 44.1 kHz with 16-bit words. The Audio Engineering Society (AES) describes formats that exceed either the CD sample rate or the CD bit depth as high-resolution in common usage, and it describes these figures as delivery modes rather than measures of sound quality. CD is the yardstick here, not a synonym for poor quality. A file that beats CD on one axis is high-resolution under the common meaning, but the AES notes that perception and the whole processing chain also matter, and the delivery figures do not settle those questions on their own (AES, “High-Resolution Audio”).

The Japan Audio Society (JAS) gives concrete examples of how the CD comparison is applied. It says it generally supports the notice issued by JEITA and uses these examples to show that raising only one dimension does not automatically qualify if the other falls below the CD reference.
| Example specification | Qualifies under JAS examples? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 44.1 kHz / 24-bit | Yes | Bit depth exceeds CD’s 16 bits while the sample rate matches CD |
| 96 kHz / 16-bit | Yes | Sample rate exceeds CD’s 44.1 kHz while the bit depth matches CD |
| 96 kHz / 12-bit | No | Bit depth falls below CD’s 16 bits, even though the sample rate is higher |
| 32 kHz / 24-bit | No | Sample rate falls below CD’s 44.1 kHz, even though the bit depth is higher |
Those four rows come from JAS’s examples as published on its definition page (JAS, “Hi-Res Audio: Definition and operation of the logo”). They describe JAS’s application of the definition. They are not a universal rule that every standards body or streaming service follows.

Four different rules that people mix up
Most confusion comes from treating a definition, a logo requirement, a preservation recommendation and an industry descriptor as one rule. They answer different questions.
| Source | What it sets | Purpose | Date |
|---|---|---|---|
| AES, common usage | Formats above 44.1 kHz or 16-bit | Plain-language meaning of the term | Date not stated on the cited page |
| JAS examples (JEITA guidance) | Either axis above CD, with the other not below it | Applying the definition | Date not stated on the cited page |
| JAS equipment logo | 96 kHz/24-bit digital signal handling and conversion, plus analog, listening and other criteria | Certifying playback equipment | Date not stated on the cited page |
| Library of Congress, Recommended Formats Statement | PCM at 96 kHz/24-bit or higher, or DSD at 2.8 MHz or higher, when produced alongside CD | Preservation of final release files | Date not stated on the cited page |
| 2014 industry definition, reported by Sound & Vision | Lossless audio reproducing the full range of recordings mastered from better than CD quality sources | Voluntary industry definition | Reported June 12, 2014 |
The AES definition: a plain-language meaning
The AES uses the phrase “commonly understood meaning” for digital formats above CD’s 44.1 kHz and 16-bit figures. It is the most general of these sources and makes no claim about equipment or archiving.
The JAS logo: a playback-side certification
The JAS equipment logo is a different thing from the definition. It requires 96 kHz/24-bit recording or playback and conversion capability, along with analog frequency performance and a listening assessment. A separate wireless logo adds wireless conditions, and JAS warns that wireless performance may vary with environment and use. A logo therefore certifies a device’s capabilities, not the quality of any file played on it.

The Library of Congress: a preservation preference
The Library of Congress’s recommended-format statement for audio works is written for archiving, not for consumers. For high-resolution audio (HRA) final files produced alongside CD, it names PCM at 96 kHz/24-bit or higher, or DSD at 2.8 MHz or higher. It also prefers a final release over a pre-production version, and a native-resolution file over an upsampled one (Library of Congress, “Recommended Formats Statement – Audio Works”). Those figures describe what an archive should keep, not what a streaming label must print.
The 2014 industry definition
In June 2014 an industry effort produced a more specific definition, which Sound & Vision reported on June 12, 2014. The definition reads: “High Resolution Audio is defined as ‘lossless audio that is capable of reproducing the full range of sound from recordings that have been mastered from better than CD quality music sources.’” According to that report, the Digital Entertainment Group worked with the Consumer Electronics Association and The Recording Academy, alongside Sony Music Entertainment, Universal Music Group and Warner Music Group. The same effort described voluntary master-quality source descriptors, including PCM, analog, CD and DSD/DSF categories (Sound & Vision, “Music Industry Announces Formal Definition for High Resolution Audio”). This is a 2014 industry definition. It does not show that any particular catalog listing meets it today.
Reading the specification on a file
Once you know which rule applies, the next task is decoding the label itself.

Sample rate and bit depth
Sample rate is written in kHz and describes how often the PCM samples represent the signal. Bit depth describes the size of each PCM sample word. Use these two figures to decode a stated PCM specification. Do not read them as a verdict on how good the recording sounds.
PCM and WAV
PCM is the encoding most commonly seen in WAV and other file formats. The Library of Congress names PCM resolutions from 96 kHz/24-bit up to 384 kHz as examples of what it expects where such files are produced for release.
DSD and its MHz figure
DSD is a separate high-resolution delivery form. Its preservation threshold is stated in MHz, 2.8 MHz or higher, which is a different kind of measure from PCM’s kHz and bit-depth pair. Do not compare the two numbers as if they describe the same thing.

This guarantees lossless audio quality for a pristine listening experience.
Lossless and uncompressed are not the same property
Uncompressed storage and lossless compression are different properties. The Library of Congress prefers uncompressed files in one part of its ordering, but it also states that a lossless compressed scheme is preferable to a lossy one among acceptable compressed options. FLAC is a lossless format, so a FLAC file can preserve everything in the original PCM stream. Being lossless does not, by itself, make a file high-resolution. The sample rate and bit depth still decide that.
Native resolution versus upsampling
A file stated as 96 kHz or 24-bit may have been produced at that resolution from the start, or it may have been converted up from a lower-resolution original. The Library of Congress explicitly prefers the native-resolution file. A file’s metadata alone cannot tell you which happened, so look for the master’s documented origin rather than the number on the label.
A checklist for telling a genuine source from a label
- Check the stated sample rate and bit depth against the definition you are applying. Do not call a file high-resolution just because it is 24-bit; 44.1 kHz/24-bit qualifies under the JAS examples, but 32 kHz/24-bit does not.
- Confirm the encoding. WAV, FLAC and DSD can all carry high-resolution audio, but the container alone does not prove the content.
- Look for evidence of native origin, such as a release described as mastered from a higher-resolution source. Be cautious where the source is undocumented.
- Treat a streaming badge or a “hi-res” tag as a claim to verify, not as proof of master provenance.
- Remember that a logo on playback equipment certifies the equipment, not the file.
What you need to play it
Playback is a separate link in the chain. The JAS equipment logo’s 96 kHz/24-bit digital-to-analog conversion criterion is one way to think about what a device must handle. A USB DAC is a common physical route to meeting that criterion, but the cited criteria do not validate any particular model, and nothing in them requires a listener to buy new equipment in order to understand or own a high-resolution file. Many listeners will already have a device that handles the format, and the specification on the file tells you what a device needs to accept.

Stereo and multichannel releases are also distinct options. The Library of Congress’s preferences address channel configuration alongside resolution, so a multichannel file should be judged on the same criteria as a stereo one, not assumed to qualify because of its channel count.
Taken together, these points make a practical test: confirm the sample rate and bit depth against the definition you care about, check that the encoding is PCM, DSD or lossless, look for evidence of a native-resolution master, and confirm your playback chain can accept the stated format.
