In common usage, the Audio Engineering Society (AES) describes high-resolution formats as digital formats whose sample rates or bit depths go beyond the CD reference of 44.1 kHz and 16 bits. The Japan Audio Society (JAS) uses a narrower, product-specific standard for its Hi-Res Audio logo, which requires digital capability at 96 kHz/24-bit or above. Which definition applies depends on who is using the term, so the first step is to identify the reference.
Three definitions, three purposes
The phrase is used in at least three different ways. Each comes from a different kind of source, and each answers a different question.

| Reference | What it defines | Thresholds stated | Where it applies |
|---|---|---|---|
| AES common usage (AES overview, undated) | Digital formats described as high-resolution | Sample rate and/or bit depth above CD’s 44.1 kHz and 16 bits | General descriptive usage; not a legal standard |
| JAS Hi-Res Audio logo (definition updated 9 November 2022) | Products that carry the logo | Digital stages at 96 kHz/24-bit or above; analog performance at 40 kHz or above; a manufacturer listening evaluation | Product certification |
| AES5-2018 recommended practice | Professional PCM handling | 48 kHz recommended for origination, processing and interchange; 96 kHz for higher bandwidth or more relaxed anti-alias filtering | Studio and production workflows |
A file described as “high-resolution” in a store listing may be using the broad AES-style sense, while a device marked with the JAS logo meets a stricter set of product criteria. Neither label tells you whether the file or device will sound better to you.
What the two numbers describe
Sample rate
Sample rate is the number of samples taken per second, expressed in kilohertz (kHz). It sets the highest frequency a PCM format can represent. A 44.1 kHz format can represent frequencies up to roughly 22 kHz, while 96 kHz extends that limit to roughly 48 kHz. That added bandwidth is the main engineering reason the higher rate exists, and it is a different property from how loud or detailed a recording sounds.

Bit depth
Bit depth is the word length used for each sample. It determines the resolution of each measurement of amplitude. Going from 16 to 24 bits changes the available dynamic range; it does not change the frequencies the format can carry. “24-bit/96 kHz” therefore describes two separate parameters, and a format must be judged on both.
Which formats count under the broad label
The JAS summary of examples from the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) helps show how the broad label is applied. The table below uses those listed examples. It is not a complete formula. The source does not state one rule that explains every case, so read it as a set of examples.

- [USB DAC, Line Out & Headphone Out] Use the H2 as more than a portable MP3 player. Connect it to your computer as a USB DAC, plug in wired headphones through the 3.5mm headphone jack, or use the dedicated line out with car AUX, powered speakers or home audio systems.
- [Zinc Alloy Body with Physical Controls] The solid zinc alloy chassis gives the H2 a premium, durable feel, while the physical buttons and scroll wheel make music control simple without relying on a touchscreen. Up to 10 hours of playback supports daily listening at home, work or on the go.
| Format (sample rate / bit depth) | Parameter above CD reference | High-resolution in JEITA examples cited by JAS | Meets JAS logo digital threshold (96 kHz/24-bit) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 44.1 kHz / 24-bit | Bit depth | Yes | No |
| 48 kHz / 24-bit | Bit depth | Yes | No |
| 96 kHz / 16-bit | Sample rate | Yes | No |
| 96 kHz / 24-bit | Both | Yes | Yes, for the digital stages |
| 96 kHz / 12-bit | Sample rate | Not listed as qualifying | No |
| 32 kHz / 24-bit | Bit depth | Not listed as qualifying | No |
The 96 kHz/12-bit and 32 kHz/24-bit examples show that exceeding one CD parameter is not, on its own, enough under the JEITA examples. The 12-bit word length falls below CD’s 16 bits, and the 32 kHz rate falls below CD’s 44.1 kHz. Both cases are useful reminders that the two parameters must be read together.
What the JAS logo actually requires
The JAS logo is a product standard, and its requirements are more demanding than the common label. Its digital criteria call for 96 kHz/24-bit or higher capability across specified recording, input/output, playback, processing and conversion stages. Its analog criteria call for performance at 40 kHz or above, and a listening evaluation by the manufacturer is part of the process.

The 96 kHz/24-bit figure is prominent in the logo criteria, but it is not a universal definition of high-resolution audio. A product can meet the broad label without carrying the logo, and a file at 96 kHz/24-bit does not carry the logo just by existing.
Professional rates and the 48 kHz recommendation
AES5-2018, a professional recommended practice, recommends 48 kHz for PCM program origination, processing and interchange. It recognizes 44.1 kHz for certain consumer applications and 96 kHz where a higher bandwidth or more relaxed anti-alias filtering is needed.

This is useful context. Professional workflows choose sample rates for engineering reasons tied to the job, not because the highest available rate is always preferred. A rate’s place in a professional chain does not tell you its place in a consumer library.

Format capability is not the same as audible benefit
AES’s High Resolution Audio committee describes resolution in terms of bandwidth, dynamic range, time and spatial acuity. It notes that system elements, signal processing and perceptual factors all influence the result. The AES overview makes a similar point: a format is a delivery mode, and signal quality and human perception raise questions that a sample rate and bit depth label cannot settle.

The AES and JAS material reviewed does not cite a listening study that quantifies an audible benefit from higher rates. That absence matters. A logo or label confirms the format or device capability, not that you will hear a difference. If you want to judge a playback chain, look at each stage rather than at one specification:
- The source file: the sample rate and bit depth actually stored in the file, not the rate printed on the product page.
- The playback software or app: whether it passes the file’s rate and bit depth through without resampling or truncating, and whether it allows the setting you need.
- The converter (DAC): the sample rates and bit depths the device lists as supported.
- The amplifier and transducers: headphones or speakers, and the room they are used in, which often affect what you hear more than the file format does.
Wireless claims
JAS treats wireless products separately through its Hi-Res Audio Wireless logo. That definition lists the codecs certified for the wireless logo, and applicable products must also meet the non-wireless Hi-Res Audio requirements. Codec lists and logo criteria can change, so check the current JAS definition page before naming a supported codec for any product.
Do you need a DAC?
A DAC (digital-to-analog converter) is the stage that turns digital samples into an analog signal, and it appears in the JAS logo criteria as part of playback. If your playback device’s converter does not list support for the file’s sample rate and bit depth, an external DAC may be the way to play that file at its native values. Confirm the supported rates and bit depths in the device’s specifications before buying.
Headphones are a related category because JAS includes headphone performance in its analog criteria. The logo describes that performance under the logo’s test conditions. It does not guarantee better perceived sound in your listening setup.
Checklist before you buy or label a file
- Decide which definition you are using: the broad AES-style label, the JAS logo criteria, or a professional PCM workflow.
- Write down the file’s sample rate and bit depth separately, and check both against the reference you chose.
- Check each device in the chain for the same two values, including any resampling.
- For wireless playback, confirm the codec and that the product meets the non-wireless requirements, using the current JAS page.
- Treat any claim of audible improvement as a claim to test with your own equipment, not as something the label proves.
Source limits
The core definitions come from official AES and JAS pages. The AES common-usage description is not a legal standard. The JAS criteria are specific to the logo, and the definition page reviewed was last updated on 9 November 2022. AES5-2018 is a professional recommended practice, not a consumer rule. No controlled listening-test result that quantifies audible benefit was identified in these sources.
