Definition of Electric Vehicle Connector: What the Plug Is and How to Tell Which One Your EV Uses

An electric vehicle (EV) connector is the plug on charging equipment that goes into the vehicle’s charge inlet. The U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) defines it simply as “what is plugged into a vehicle to charge it.” The connector is the physical interface between the charger and the car, and which connector a car uses depends on its inlet, its model year, and whether it charges with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC).

Connector, port, and station: three different things

The terms are often used interchangeably, but the AFDC separates them. A charging station is the location. A charging port (also called a charger or EVSE port in AFDC terminology) delivers power to one vehicle at a time. The connector is the plug that comes off that port. A single port can offer more than one connector, but it still charges only one vehicle at a time. Source: AFDC, Electric Vehicle Charging Stations.

In practice, that means a station with four ports may have eight connectors, and a driver only needs the one that matches the car’s inlet.

The connector families you will see in the United States

In the AFDC’s U.S. descriptions, each connector family is tied to a charging context. The table below summarizes the families named in AFDC station and data documentation. It is a U.S.-oriented list and does not describe every connector used worldwide.

CCS (J1772 Combo) DC fast charging AFDC describes it as the common DC fast-charging system for most vehicle models.
CHAdeMO DC fast charging AFDC describes it as a DC fast connector associated with select vehicle models.
SAE J3400 / NACS AC and DC charging SAE’s standard based on Tesla’s NACS design. Vehicle and network compatibility remains model-specific.
MCS / J3271 DC charging category in AFDC station data Listed in AFDC’s station-data dictionary. It is a DC charging category, not a passenger-car connector name.

SAE J1772: the basic AC connector

J1772 is the AC connector that AFDC associates with Level 1 and Level 2 charging. Level 2 equipment is the usual public and home AC option. Because the connector only defines the plug and its signaling, it does not by itself set how fast a car will charge.

  • EASY TO USE - for Tesla charge adapter is compact and portable. Simply plug it into compatible J1772 charger, then connect to your Tesla to start charging

CCS (J1772 Combo): J1772 with DC contacts added

CCS, which AFDC also calls J1772 Combo, adds additional lower contacts for DC fast charging to a J1772-based inlet. It is therefore related to the basic J1772 connector, but it is not interchangeable with it. A car with a CCS inlet can use J1772 for AC charging, while the DC contacts are used at DC fast chargers.

CHAdeMO: a separate DC fast-charging plug

CHAdeMO is a separate DC fast-charging connector. AFDC notes that it is associated with select vehicle models, so a CHAdeMO plug cannot be assumed to fit a CCS-equipped car, or the reverse, without checking the vehicle.

SAE J3400 / NACS: one plug for AC and DC

SAE J3400 is SAE’s standard based on the NACS design developed by Tesla. AFDC lists it as serving both AC and DC charging. Whether a particular vehicle or network supports it depends on the model and the charging operator, so the presence of the plug at a station does not confirm every car can use it.

MCS / J3271: a DC category, not a car plug

MCS (J3271) appears in AFDC’s station data as a DC charging category. Treat it as a classification used in station records rather than a connector a typical passenger car will have on its inlet.

Does a plug that fits mean the car can charge?

No. A physical fit only shows that the connector can mate with the inlet. It does not confirm that the vehicle supports the power level or charging protocol the equipment offers. AFDC’s general information identifies connector families and explains where adapters are used, but it does not certify any specific vehicle and adapter pairing.

  • The vehicle maker’s specifications for your exact model year and inlet type.
  • The maker’s adapter guidance, including whether an adapter is supported at all, and whether it is for AC charging, DC charging, or both.
  • The station’s listed connectors, which are shown in the AFDC station data for U.S. locations.

Adapters are not universal. An adapter that works for AC charging does not make a car compatible with DC fast charging, and a DC adapter does not make every connector interchangeable.

A connector does not set charging speed

The connector identifies the plug standard, not the speed. AFDC gives broad charging-level ranges, but the power a car actually receives depends on the charging station, the vehicle’s own capability, and conditions at the time of charging. Two cars with the same connector can charge at very different rates, and the same car can charge at different rates on different stations.

Scope of this definition

This definition is based on U.S. Department of Energy AFDC pages and station data documentation. The AFDC does not provide a complete international connector list or a model-by-model compatibility table, so regional standards outside the United States, and the compatibility of specific models, are not covered here. For a specific car, the vehicle maker’s documentation is the authoritative source.

Dated figure on DC fast charging

As of 2023, more than 20% of public EV charging ports in the United States were DC fast chargers, according to the AFDC. This is a historical figure from 2023 and should not be read as the current share.
