Definition of AI Social Media: What the Term Means and What It Covers

AI social media means the use of artificial intelligence in social-media services and in the work of running or using them. It is an umbrella phrase, not a single app, model or feature, and it is not an established legal category. Which AI is involved, and what it does, depends on the platform and the feature.

A working definition

In everyday use, “AI social media” refers to any case where an AI system performs a function inside a social platform or a social-media workflow. The phrase is an editorial shorthand. The laws that define AI define the technology, not this label, so treat it as a descriptive term rather than a defined one.

Two broad kinds of application sit under it:

  • Recommendation and ranking: systems that use patterns learned from user and content signals to select or order existing material, such as a feed.
  • Generative tools: systems that produce new text, audio, images or video from a prompt.

A scholarly position paper on regulating generative AI by learning from social-media regulation (published on OpenReview) draws this contrast between generative AI and social-media feeds. Its observations describe broad tendencies, not the behavior of every platform.

How the law defines “AI” itself

Because “AI social media” has no legal definition, the useful legal anchor is how statutes define AI. Two definitions are commonly cited, and they apply in different jurisdictions.

European Union

Article 3(1) of the EU Artificial Intelligence Act, as shown by the European Commission’s AI Act Service Desk, reads:

“‘AI system’ means a machine-based system that is designed to operate with varying levels of autonomy and that may exhibit adaptiveness after deployment, and that, for explicit or implicit objectives, infers, from the input it receives, how to generate outputs such as predictions, content, recommendations, or decisions that can influence physical or virtual environments;”

Note that the outputs listed, predictions, content, recommendations and decisions, map neatly onto both feed ranking (recommendations) and generative tools (content). The Service Desk states that its summaries are explanatory and not legally binding, so use the regulation’s official text for legal interpretation.

United States

The United States Code (15 USC §9401) defines artificial intelligence as a “machine-based system that can, for a given set of human-defined objectives, make predictions, recommendations or decisions influencing real or virtual environments.” This is statutory wording, not a quotation from any individual, and it is a separate definition from the EU’s.

Model versus system: where an AI feature begins

A model is not automatically a complete AI system. The AI Act Service Desk explains that a model generally needs further components, such as a user interface, to become part of a usable system. For social media this matters: a language or image model on its own is not a social-media feature. The feature is the whole service built around it, such as an in-app caption assistant or a ranked feed.

Comparing the two main applications

Axis Recommendation and ranking Generative tools
Input Learned user and content signals A prompt
Output A selected or ordered feed New text, image, audio or video
Role in the experience Chooses and orders existing material Creates new material
System boundary The model plus the feed and service around it The model plus the interface and service around it

What the term does not tell you

  • It does not describe every network the same way. Platforms differ in which AI they use, for what purpose and how. Do not assume a given feature is AI-powered without evidence about that specific service.
  • It is not a legal term. The statutes above define AI or AI systems, not “AI social media.”
  • It is not one product. It spans anything from automated ranking to content-creation features.

When you use the phrase precisely, name the platform, the function (ranking, generation or something else) and whether you mean the model or the full service.
