There is no officially released standalone DeepSeek R2 model as of August 18, 2026. DeepSeek’s official model catalog lists DeepSeek-V4, released as a preview on April 24, 2026, and DeepSeek-V3.2, released on December 1, 2025—but not R2. R2 was a reported successor project to DeepSeek-R1, not a verifiable product with a published model card, weights, API identifier or feature sheet.
What DeepSeek R2 was supposed to be
DeepSeek-R1 arrived on January 20, 2025, as a reasoning-focused model associated with strong mathematics, coding and general problem-solving performance. DeepSeek also released smaller distilled models. Its impact made a rapid successor seem likely.

In February 2025, Reuters reported that DeepSeek was accelerating work on a successor and had an earlier target around early May. That report established a development plan and expected timing—not a launch, final specifications or a public commitment. An internal project, a reported target, an announced product and a released model are different things.

Was DeepSeek R2 ever released?
No publicly verifiable standalone release has been identified by August 18, 2026. DeepSeek’s transparency center lists V4.0 and V3.2, while its API changelog and V4 announcement document current V4 identifiers. Neither identifies an R2 model.
No official R2 model card, technical report, weights page, repository controlled by DeepSeek, API identifier or release note is listed in those sources. That is not proof that an internal project never existed; it means there is no official public product to download, call or benchmark.

Coverage linking the expected successor with coding and multilingual improvements includes this report carried by Yahoo Tech. It does not turn those expectations into shipping specifications.

How the timeline moved from R1 to V4
- January 20, 2025: DeepSeek published its R1 release documentation at the official API news page.
- February 2025: Reuters reported an accelerated R2 successor plan and an earlier target around May.
- August 2025: South China Morning Post reported the V3.1 update, a 128K context window and continuing uncertainty around a public R2 timeline. Read the SCMP report.
- December 1, 2025: DeepSeek’s transparency catalog lists V3.2.
- April 24, 2026: DeepSeek’s catalog lists V4 as a preview, with V4-Pro and V4-Flash documented through its API materials.
The sequence shows documented V-series releases rather than an officially labeled R2 launch.
What DeepSeek actually offers now
DeepSeek-V4
The April 24, 2026 V4 documentation describes two variants: deepseek-v4-pro and deepseek-v4-flash. It specifies a 1-million-token standard context window, thinking and non-thinking modes, OpenAI Chat Completions compatibility, Anthropic API compatibility, and optimizations for coding agents and agentic workflows. It also describes DeepSeek Sparse Attention and token-wise compression as efficiency techniques.
Those materials emphasize long context, reasoning modes and coding-oriented agents. They do not, by themselves, establish image or audio support, so V4 should not automatically be called multimodal.

DeepSeek-V3.2
The official V3.2 model card specifies text input and text output, a 128K context length, 671 billion total parameters and 37 billion activated parameters per token. It describes V3.2 as using the V3.1 architecture with continued-training changes, including DeepSeek Sparse Attention.

Some commentators treat V3.1 or V3.2 as practical successors to R1. DeepSeek’s official documents do not call either release “R2,” however. R1-0528 is likewise not identified as R2 in the catalog.
Why DeepSeek’s earlier technology made R2 important
DeepSeek’s V3 technical report describes DeepSeekMoE, Multi-head Latent Attention and efficiency-oriented training and inference methods. See the V3 technical report. R1 demonstrated the company’s reasoning emphasis, while the V3.2 paper explains the motivation for Sparse Attention in long-context processing.
That history explains the expectations around R2: readers reasonably anticipated better reasoning, coding, multilingual performance and efficiency. It does not show that those improvements shipped under the R2 name.
How to verify a future R2 announcement
Before trusting a model page, wrapper or social-media “leak,” look for at least one of these:

- An official model card or technical report.
- Official weights or a repository controlled by DeepSeek.
- Reproducible benchmark instructions and evaluation data.
An anonymous Telegram post, screenshot, influencer video, third-party API listing or hosted endpoint labeled “R2” is not enough. A provider can invent a convenient name, route an existing model or offer an unofficial fine-tune.

Benchmarks versus production use
A higher benchmark would not automatically mean better factual accuracy, instruction following, writing, tool reliability, latency, cost, safety or privacy. Compare the task, evaluation method and deployment conditions separately.
Open weights versus open source
Check whether a release provides open weights, a technical paper, training code, self-hosting rights and a license that permits commercial use. “Open source” is not a substitute for reading the actual distribution terms.

A 1-million-token window describes capacity, not guaranteed reliable reasoning across every token. Long context also does not imply multimodal input; V3.2 is explicitly text in and text out.

Availability by geography and service
Web-app features, mobile features, the official API, Chinese-language services and third-party hosting can differ in availability, data handling, payment options and censorship behavior. Do not assume that access in one region or product applies to another.
What developers should use—and an API warning
For documented DeepSeek access, start with the official API documentation, platform and current pricing page. The documented direction is V4-Pro and V4-Flash, not R2.
DeepSeek announced that the legacy identifiers deepseek-chat and deepseek-reasoner would be retired after July 24, 2026 at 15:59 UTC and routed to V4-Flash during the transition. Because that date has passed, check the live API documentation and responses before changing production code; do not assume an old tutorial still identifies the underlying model.
OpenAI-compatible endpoints can simplify migration, but organizations needing U.S.-only data residency, specific compliance commitments or a long-term support contract must verify those terms directly. Local inference is not free in an operational sense: hardware, hosting, electricity and maintenance still cost money.
Why the missing R2 label mattered beyond naming
DeepSeek’s cost-conscious architecture, open-weight releases and rapid iteration made the rumored successor significant in the wider U.S.–China AI competition. An R2 launch might have been read as evidence of another major reasoning advance under hardware and export constraints. But product names are not capability measurements. The released V3.1, V3.2 and V4 documents are more useful than speculation about a missing label.
Bottom line
DeepSeek R2 is best understood as a reported successor plan that never became an officially cataloged standalone release by August 18, 2026. No R2 feature sheet, benchmark record, parameter count or API access is verified. DeepSeek’s documented path moved through V3.1, V3.2 and V4, with V4-Pro and V4-Flash the model identifiers developers should investigate now.
