Quick answer: Choose PlateUp! if you want a hectic restaurant game built around teamwork, time pressure and kitchen optimization. Choose Deep Dish Dungeon if you want cooking woven into a slower dungeon adventure where meals improve survival and exploration. Choose Dungeon Munchies if you want a single-player 2D action RPG in which recipes and a limited food loadout determine your combat build.

Deep Dish Dungeon, PlateUp! and Dungeon Munchies at a glance

Game Cooking’s role Format Multiplayer Main pressure Best fit
Deep Dish Dungeon Cook meals that provide stat effects and support dungeon survival. 3D exploration dungeon crawler with crafting and survival elements. Solo or online co-op with up to two friends. Resource scarcity, puzzles, environmental dangers and enemies. Players who want discovery, atmosphere and cooking as part of an adventure loop.
PlateUp! Plan a menu, cook dishes, serve customers and automate a restaurant. Top-down restaurant-management roguelite. Solo, online co-op and shared or split-screen co-op for up to four players. Hectic service windows, customer patience, layout efficiency and run progression. Groups that enjoy communication, optimization and repeatable restaurant runs.
Dungeon Munchies Recipes grant abilities, while leftover ingredients become weapons. 2D side-scrolling action RPG with pixel-art presentation and dark comedy. Single-player. Combat encounters, ingredient hunting and build decisions. Solo players who want food to define an action-RPG character build.

These games share a food theme but solve different design problems. PlateUp! is fundamentally a service-management game. Deep Dish Dungeon uses cooking to make exploration and survival more interesting. Dungeon Munchies turns meals into a character-progression system. The right choice depends less on how much you like recipes than on the kind of decisions you want to make while playing.

How each game actually plays

Deep Dish Dungeon: cooking for survival and discovery

Steam lists Deep Dish Dungeon as released on 13 October 2026 by Behold Studios and Raw Fury. It is a survival exploration dungeon crawler designed for solo play or online co-op with up to two friends. You gather resources, improve a campsite, craft tools, prepare meals, solve puzzles and investigate a hand-crafted dungeon.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The campsite gives the game a rhythm that is very different from a restaurant simulator. A trip into the dungeon is an expedition: you decide what resources are worth carrying, what tools to craft and when to return to improve your base. Cooking belongs inside that loop. Recipes unlock different stat effects, so a meal is not merely a healing animation or a collectible. It can influence how prepared you are for the next section of the dungeon.

Exploration is deliberately observant. The official Steam description emphasizes investigating shadows, opening doors, solving puzzles and paying attention to environmental clues. Progress therefore comes from noticing how the space works as well as from defeating enemies. If you enjoy games that reward curiosity, careful routing and a willingness to test what an object or clue might mean, this is the strongest match of the three.

Its cooking system is best understood as preparation rather than production. You are not balancing a menu or trying to serve a queue before customers lose patience. You are choosing which ingredients and recipes will make the next expedition safer or more effective. That makes food meaningful even when no one is waiting for a plate: the reward is access, survivability and better information in the dungeon.

PlateUp!: a restaurant-management roguelite

Steam lists PlateUp! as released on 4 August 2022. Its loop is explicit: cook and serve dishes, design and decorate a restaurant, buy and place appliances, manage customers and carry unlocks into new procedurally generated restaurants.

A run is organized around 15 hectic days. During service, every action competes with the clock and with customer patience. Between services, you spend resources on equipment and layout changes. The floor plan is not decoration alone: the position of prep counters, cooking appliances, tables and serving routes determines how much work your staff can complete before the room backs up.

Automation becomes increasingly important. Conveyors, turbo-ovens and other appliances can be arranged into production lines that reduce walking and synchronize cooking steps. A successful kitchen is therefore a system you design, not just a sequence of recipes you memorize. One player may prep ingredients while another serves, or a group may specialize in a carefully engineered workflow.

After a failed or completed run, progression carries upgrades into a new franchise. Procedurally generated restaurants keep the broad challenge repeatable, while menu and appliance choices force you to adapt. The result is a game about learning from bottlenecks: a dish that looked profitable can become a liability if it creates too many preparation steps, and an expensive appliance can be worthwhile if it removes a recurring delay.

Dungeon Munchies: food as an action-RPG build system

Steam lists Dungeon Munchies as released on 27 July 2022 by maJAJa. It is a single-player, side-scrolling action RPG in which you hunt creatures, cook them, eat the resulting dishes and use leftover animal and plant parts to craft weapons.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The defining constraint is stomach capacity: your character can carry seven dishes. That limit turns every recipe into a build decision. A meal may improve health recovery, raise damage output or provide a watery shield, while weapons made from discarded ingredients add another layer of specialization. The seven slots are not a pantry for every situation; they are a compact loadout you take into combat.

Because dishes and weapons interact, changing one part of the loadout can alter the way the whole character feels. You might emphasize survivability and recovery, build around direct damage, or combine a defensive food effect with a weapon that lets you stay aggressive. Ingredient hunting is consequently tied to experimentation: creatures and plants are valuable not only as loot but as possible components in a future build.

Nintendo’s official Switch listing records a 15 December 2021 release, one player on a single system and a PEGI 16 rating. The Switch edition is therefore a confirmed option for someone who wants this food-and-combat system in handheld or console play, while the cited Steam listing establishes the PC version.

Which game has the deepest cooking mechanics?

There is no single winner because “deep” means different things in these designs. PlateUp! has the deepest operational cooking: the challenge comes from sequencing tasks, choosing equipment, arranging a kitchen and maintaining service under pressure. Deep Dish Dungeon has the deepest survival integration: recipes matter because they change how you approach an uncertain expedition. Dungeon Munchies has the deepest buildcraft: dishes are ability slots that combine with crafted weapons and define combat style.

Type of depth Best example What you are deciding
Workflow and logistics PlateUp! Which dishes to offer, where to place appliances, how to shorten routes and how to divide work among players.
Preparation and survival Deep Dish Dungeon Which ingredients to carry, which stat effects to cook and when to leave the dungeon for a safer resupply.
Character build and combat Dungeon Munchies Which seven dishes to equip, which abilities to combine and how food effects interact with weapons.

Choose PlateUp! for systemic kitchen mastery

Pick PlateUp! if your idea of cooking depth involves a growing network of dependencies. A menu choice affects prep time; prep time affects appliance demand; appliance demand affects floor space; floor space affects customer throughput and the routes your team must walk. The best solutions are often redesigns rather than faster reactions.

Choose Deep Dish Dungeon for meaningful meals during exploration

Pick Deep Dish Dungeon if you want food decisions to remain connected to the unknown. The value of a recipe depends on where you are going, what resources you can recover and which stat effect will help with the next obstacle. Cooking supports a larger investigation instead of becoming the entire objective.

Choose Dungeon Munchies for recipe-driven builds

Pick Dungeon Munchies if you want to theorycraft a character around food. Seven slots create a clear limit, and the combination of dish effects with crafted weapons gives each loadout a distinct purpose. The cooking is less about physically running a kitchen and more about deciding what your character is capable of doing.

Is PlateUp! better for multiplayer?

For group play, yes. PlateUp! is the only one of the three built specifically around a four-person restaurant team. It supports solo play, online co-op and shared or split-screen co-op, with up to four players operating the same restaurant. The game’s central problems—dividing jobs, keeping routes clear, communicating upgrades and recovering when service goes wrong—become more interesting when several people share responsibility.

Deep Dish Dungeon supports solo play or online co-op with up to two friends. That smaller party suits an expedition format: players can scout, gather, solve environmental puzzles and prepare for threats without the coordination overhead of a full restaurant crew. It is a good choice for a small group that wants a shared adventure rather than a high-volume service shift.

Dungeon Munchies is single-player on the cited Steam and Nintendo listings. Its food system is designed around one character’s seven-dish loadout, so there is no co-op kitchen or shared combat role to manage. Choose it when you want uninterrupted control over one build, not when you are trying to find a game for a group call.

Which one is the best adventure game?

Deep Dish Dungeon is the clearest adventure choice. Its hand-crafted dungeon, campsite upgrades, resource gathering, puzzles and environmental clues all point toward exploration as the primary activity. Cooking helps you survive and progress through that space, but the reason to keep going is the promise of another discovery behind the next door.

Dungeon Munchies is also an adventure, but its structure is closer to a story-driven action RPG. You move through a 2D world, fight creatures, collect ingredients and use recipes to shape combat. The sense of adventure comes from traversal, encounters and narrative momentum; food is the system that lets you customize how those encounters are handled.

PlateUp! is not an adventure game in the same sense. Its procedural restaurants and franchise resets create replayability, but the objective is to operate and improve a business. If you want a world to investigate, choose one of the dungeon games. If you want a repeatable challenge in which a team improves a process, choose PlateUp!.

How the pacing and pressure differ

Slow, investigative pressure in Deep Dish Dungeon

The pressure in Deep Dish Dungeon comes from uncertainty. You may lack a resource, encounter an enemy before you are ready or miss an environmental clue that would make a puzzle clearer. The game asks you to observe and manage risk. Players who dislike constant timers but enjoy planning an expedition will likely find this pacing comfortable.

Constant service pressure in PlateUp!

PlateUp! concentrates pressure into service windows. Customer patience, order sequencing and walking distance all matter at once, especially as the restaurant grows more complex. The 15-day run structure gives each franchise a clear arc, while procedural layouts and upgrade choices encourage repeated attempts with different strategies.

Combat pressure in Dungeon Munchies

Dungeon Munchies asks you to make build decisions before and during action-RPG encounters. Food effects can change how aggressively you fight, how much recovery you have available and which weapon combinations make sense. The tension is not customer throughput or resource scarcity in a dungeon; it is whether your chosen seven dishes and crafted equipment suit the enemies ahead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Solo play: which game works best alone?

All three can be approached by a solo player, but they reward different kinds of solitary play. Deep Dish Dungeon gives one player the full exploration loop: gathering, crafting, cooking, puzzle solving and combat without needing to coordinate with anyone else. It is the best solo pick if you want a self-paced expedition.

PlateUp! can be played alone, but solo service requires you to manage every role and keep the restaurant’s layout especially efficient. That creates a demanding optimization challenge. It is a strong solo choice for someone who enjoys multitasking and refining a system, less so for someone looking for a relaxed cooking game.

Dungeon Munchies is designed as a single-player experience. Because the seven-dish stomach and weapon crafting belong to one character, the game’s progression never asks you to compromise with another player’s build. Choose it for a focused action-RPG session in which experimentation with recipes directly changes combat.

Decision guide: pick the game that matches your priorities

  • You want four-player co-op, split-screen options or a game-night challenge: choose PlateUp!.
  • You want online co-op for a small group and a hand-crafted dungeon to investigate: choose Deep Dish Dungeon.
  • You want a solo game where meals are abilities and ingredients become weapons: choose Dungeon Munchies.
  • You enjoy optimizing layouts, appliances and repeatable runs: choose PlateUp!.
  • You prefer resource gathering, puzzles, clues and a campsite between expeditions: choose Deep Dish Dungeon.
  • You want a 2D action RPG with dark comedy and build experimentation: choose Dungeon Munchies.
  • You want cooking to affect survival statistics: choose Deep Dish Dungeon.
  • You want cooking to affect combat abilities and weapon combinations: choose Dungeon Munchies.
  • You want cooking itself to be the central operational challenge: choose PlateUp!.

Platform and release information

The cited Steam listings provide official PC storefront pages for all three games. Deep Dish Dungeon is listed with a 13 October 2026 release date, PlateUp! with a 4 August 2022 release date and Dungeon Munchies with a 27 July 2022 full-release date.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dungeon Munchies also has a Nintendo Switch digital listing dated 15 December 2021. That listing specifies one player on a single system and a PEGI 16 rating. The supplied storefront information does not establish prices, regional availability, discounts or cross-save support, so check the store page for your region before purchasing.

These are digital game licenses. No official physical edition, game-specific book, manual, collectible or accessory is established by the cited listings, so a purchase decision should focus on the game and platform rather than expecting a boxed product.

Common mismatches to avoid

  • Buying PlateUp! for a story adventure: its appeal is restaurant operation and run-based optimization, not dungeon investigation.
  • Choosing Deep Dish Dungeon for a four-person party: its online co-op limit is up to two friends, so a larger group will need a different option.
  • Expecting Dungeon Munchies co-op: the cited listings describe a single-player game.
  • Assuming all three use cooking in the same way: restaurant workflow, survival preparation and combat buildcraft are separate systems with different learning curves.
  • Ignoring the format: a 3D exploratory dungeon crawler, a top-down management roguelite and a 2D side-scrolling action RPG will feel very different even when they all involve recipes.

Final verdict

PlateUp! is the best all-purpose recommendation for friends, especially groups of three or four who enjoy communication, time pressure and constant kitchen redesign. Deep Dish Dungeon is the better choice for a slower, curiosity-led adventure in which gathering and cooking make dungeon exploration safer and more rewarding. Dungeon Munchies is the most focused option for a solo player who wants food to function as a combat build system, with seven dishes and crafted weapons defining the character.

In short: run a restaurant with PlateUp!, survive an expedition with Deep Dish Dungeon, or engineer an edible action-RPG build with Dungeon Munchies.
