Cooking in Deep Dish Dungeon is expedition preparation, not decoration. You forage during a run, bring ingredients to camp, use the station that accepts them, and carry meals or potions into the next dungeon trip. Recipes unlock when your character discovers an ingredient used by that recipe, while each station imposes its own slot, fuel, timing, and failure rules.
The release-build data describes 142 recipes across crafting and production stations. A separate Steam-demo import contains 65 food and drink entries, so those counts should not be treated as interchangeable or as an official marketing total. The guide below separates full-release build information from demo-only observations.

How the cooking loop works
The practical sequence is straightforward:
- Explore and scavenge. Pick up food, materials, water, coal, and other resources while dungeon-delving.
- Return to camp. Your campsite is where ingredients become usable preparation items.
- Choose the correct station. A Cooking Pot, Skillet, Oven, Rotisserie, or Kettle will accept different combinations and quantities.
- Match a recipe. Valid ingredients produce a meal or potion; invalid combinations can produce nothing, depending on the station.
- Pack the result for the next expedition. Meals alter character statistics for a limited duration, so cooking is part of progression and route planning.
Steam’s description, published by Raw Fury for the 13 October 2026 full release, summarizes the design as gathering resources, improving a campsite, and unlocking recipes with different stat effects over time. Food therefore belongs in the same preparation checklist as equipment and campsite upgrades.

Station behavior is not interchangeable. The same ingredient can be useful at one station and invalid at another, and some stations require fuel or have a burn risk.

| Station | Inputs and capacity | Result and important rule |
|---|---|---|
| Cooking Pot | Two or three ingredients; three slots | All ingredients must come from one recipe’s ingredient list. The pot checks recipes in a fixed order and cooks the first match. Each batch produces one dish. |
| Skillet | One ingredient, or exactly two ingredients | One ingredient can cook alone. Two ingredients must belong to one combined-recipe list. Three ingredients produce nothing. |
| Oven | One item at a time, plus Coal | Bakes prepared dough or pies and roasts single ingredients. Coal is required for each oven operation. |
| Rotisserie | Three slots; one item per slot | Roasts one item in each slot. Food left cooking too long burns. |
| Kettle | Water plus potion ingredients | Water must be loaded before brewing potions such as Healing, Immunity, Refresh, and Stamina Potion. |
Cooking Pot: fixed-order matching
The pot is the station most likely to surprise new players because it does not simply choose the recipe you had in mind. It evaluates valid recipes in a fixed order and stops at the first match. Two Tomatoes make Tomato Soup, and two Raw Meat make Meat Soup. Raw Meat combined with a vegetable makes Stew, while Noodles plus Raw Meat makes Ramen. These examples use the release-build table checked by NPC Tips on 15 October 2026 (build 25955406).
Use only two or three ingredients, and make sure every ingredient is permitted by the intended recipe. If several recipes could match your loadout, change the combination so the desired result is the first valid match rather than relying on the pot to infer your preference.
Skillet: one or two ingredients only
The Skillet handles a single ingredient by itself or a two-ingredient combination listed by one recipe. Adding a third item is not an upgrade: the release-build rule says the result is nothing. This makes the Skillet useful for straightforward cooked foods and tightly defined combinations, but a poor place to experiment with three-item mixes.
Oven: coal-gated baking and roasting
The Oven processes one item at a time and requires Coal. It is the station for prepared dough and pies, as well as roasting a single ingredient. Include fuel in your gathering route; carrying dough without Coal leaves the dish unfinished at camp.

Rotisserie: throughput with a burn deadline
Three slots let you roast three items in parallel, but each slot has a failure condition. The demo cooking loop documents food burning when it remains on the Rotisserie too long. Treat the station as a timed batch: start it only when you can return to remove the food, and do not assume a completed roast will wait safely for you.
Kettle: water is a prerequisite
The Kettle is for potion brewing rather than ordinary dishes. Water must be present before you can make Healing Potion, Immunity Potion, Refresh Potion, or Stamina Potion. If a potion recipe appears unavailable, check the water requirement before replacing otherwise valid ingredients.
Other production stations
The release-build recipe table also groups recipes under Crafting, Workbench, Cooking Table, and Forge Anvil. Recipes in Crafting, Workbench, and Cooking Table are listed with a three-second production time. They are part of the wider campsite economy, while the five stations above govern the food and potion rules that most directly affect an expedition.

Recipe discovery is tied to picking up ingredients, not to memorizing a hidden cookbook. NPC Tips records a developer explanation posted on Discord on 7 March 2026: “Each player needs to grab one of the items in the recipe to unlock it.” In practical terms, collecting an ingredient can reveal every recipe that uses it.

The rule has two qualifications:
- Some recipes have a prerequisite item. Discovering one listed ingredient may not be sufficient if the recipe also requires another item or an earlier prerequisite.
- Unlocks are per player in co-op. Do not assume that one teammate’s pickup unlocks the recipe for everyone. Each player should collect at least one relevant ingredient on their own character.
For a new save, deliberately pick up unfamiliar food rather than selling or ignoring it. A single discovery can expose several recipes, making exploration a progression action even when the ingredient itself is not part of your preferred meal.
Ingredients, categories, and substitutions
The cooking overview names apples, meat, mushrooms, corn, cassava, tomatoes, beans, and cilantro among the ingredients used in dishes. Named foods include Shepherd’s Pie, meat and mushroom stew, ramen, pastel, and cassava fritters. Herbs and other ingredients can modify an existing dish where the recipe allows them.
The release-build table also uses category-based requirements. A recipe that says “any vegetable” or “any protein” can accept a permitted substitute instead of one exact named item. In some entries, raw and cooked forms can qualify. Check the recipe’s actual ingredient list rather than assuming every food in a category is interchangeable.
Build a flexible reserve
- Keep several vegetables. Category substitutions make vegetables useful across soups and stews, even when one specific crop is scarce.
- Keep more than one protein type. Raw Meat is central to examples such as Meat Soup, Stew, and Ramen, but a category-based recipe may accept another permitted protein.
- Separate ingredients from prepared food. Do not consume or cook your only copy of an ingredient needed to unlock a recipe or satisfy a prerequisite.
- Carry fuel and water alongside food ingredients. Coal gates the Oven, and water gates the Kettle; neither is optional for those stations.
Cooking times, spoilage, and failure points
Production time depends on the recipe or station. The release-build data lists three seconds for Crafting, Workbench, and Cooking Table recipes, but cooking stations use longer recipe-specific times.

The Steam-demo cooking loop also records spoilage and baskets that keep food fresh longer. Those preservation details are build-sensitive; use them as guidance for the demo rather than assuming every timing rule is unchanged in the full release. Rotisserie burning is likewise documented in the demo material and should be treated as a live timer, not a permanent storage method.
A reliable camp routine
- Sort by station before loading anything. Put Coal with Oven jobs, water with Kettle jobs, and three roastable items beside the Rotisserie.
- Start the longest unattended job first. Deep Dish Pizza takes 180 seconds in the release table, so begin it when you have enough camp time to collect it.
- Use short jobs while you remain at camp. Cooked Meat and Grilled Steak take 40 seconds, while Tomato Soup takes 45 seconds.
- Watch the Rotisserie separately. Its three-slot capacity is valuable only if you can remove food before it burns.
- Store or carry finished food according to the current build’s freshness rules. In the demo, baskets extend freshness; do not leave perishable meals exposed when preparing for a long expedition.
What food buffs do
Official descriptions establish that meals affect statistics and strengthen the character, but exact values below come from CapyDB’s Steam-demo file import (build 1013, last imported 10 October 2026). They are useful examples of scale, not an official final-release balance statement.
| Food | Recorded effect | Duration | Data boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple | +7 Max HP; +3 Max SP | 10 minutes | CapyDB Steam-demo import, build 1013 |
| Bean Soup | +40 Max HP; +20 Max SP | 15 minutes | CapyDB Steam-demo import, build 1013 |
| Apple Pie | +40 Max HP; +45 Max SP; +5% Move Speed | 30 minutes | CapyDB Steam-demo import, build 1013 |
Use four comparison axes when choosing between meals: ingredient availability, station and fuel requirements, cooking time, and the resulting statistic and duration. For an actual dungeon route, add spoilage risk and the type of support you need: health, stamina, movement, damage, or a special ability.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoosing food for a long run
- Short scouting trip: a readily available food with a 10-minute effect can cover a quick route without consuming rare ingredients.
- Combat-heavy expedition: prioritize the statistic your build lacks, then verify that the duration covers the planned route rather than ending at the first room.
- Long travel or extraction route: a longer-duration dish such as the 30-minute Apple Pie example reduces the need to stop and reapply a buff, but it also requires an Oven job and its ingredients.
- Resource-constrained camp: compare the food’s effect with its fuel, water, station time, and spoilage exposure. A theoretically stronger meal is not practical if you cannot finish or preserve it.
A step-by-step preparation plan
- Review the next expedition’s needs. Decide whether survival, stamina, movement, or another stat is the limiting factor.
- Check unlocked recipes. If the desired dish is locked, plan a pickup route for one of its ingredients; in co-op, have each player make their own discovery.
- Inventory the full recipe. Confirm category substitutions, raw-versus-cooked eligibility, fuel, and water before starting production.
- Select the station and load only valid quantities. The Pot accepts two or three ingredients, the Skillet accepts one or two, the Oven accepts one item plus Coal, and the Kettle needs water for potions.
- Schedule around the timer. Start long recipes first, then fill short jobs. Do not begin a Rotisserie batch unless someone can remove it before burning.
- Preserve and pack the result. Apply the demo’s basket-based freshness practice where applicable, and carry the meal or potion before leaving camp.
- Reassess after the run. Record which ingredient categories were scarce and which buff duration matched the route, then adjust the next gathering trip.
Understanding recipe-count and version claims
Numbers circulating online describe different datasets. NPC Tips lists 142 recipes across the crafting menu and stations in release-build data for build 25955406, checked 15 October 2026. CapyDB reports 65 food and drink entries from a Steam-demo import, build 1013, last imported 10 October 2026. The latter is not a complete full-game count.

NiaMeowDB also warns that its page is not a complete full-game recipe database. Consequently, a missing recipe on a community page does not prove that the recipe was removed, and a demo buff value should not be presented as a guaranteed final-release balance value. When comparing guides, identify the build and import date before treating a recipe, duration, or statistic as current.
Troubleshooting common cooking problems
The station produces nothing
At the Skillet, remove the third ingredient; three-item loads are invalid. At the Cooking Pot, verify that every ingredient belongs to one recipe list and that the intended result is not being pre-empted by an earlier fixed-order match.
A recipe is still locked
Pick up one ingredient used by that recipe with the character who needs the unlock. In co-op, repeat the pickup for each player, and check whether the recipe has an additional prerequisite item.
The Oven or Kettle will not start
Confirm the station-specific prerequisite: Coal for the Oven and water for the Kettle. Then verify that the item type belongs to that station’s recipe group.
Food burned or spoiled
Remove Rotisserie items before their burn deadline. For demo-style freshness rules, move finished food into a basket and avoid leaving perishable meals unattended while you continue exploring the camp.
What to remember before leaving camp
Cooking rewards deliberate preparation. Unlock recipes by discovering ingredients, maintain a flexible stock of vegetables and proteins, respect each station’s exact input rules, and schedule long or fuel-heavy jobs before departure. Treat community database numbers as build-labeled evidence: the release-build recipe table and the Steam-demo import describe different snapshots, especially for totals, preservation behavior, and buff values.
