Press the iPhone’s side button twice quickly to decline an incoming call. You can also tap Decline on screen or swipe up on the incoming-call banner. A single press of the side button, or a press of either volume button, only silences the ring; it does not reject the call.
The quickest way to decline an incoming iPhone call
When the phone is ringing, press the side button twice in quick succession. The call is rejected without requiring you to look at the display. This is the fastest option when you are driving, in a meeting, or holding the phone where the screen is difficult to use.
Declining normally sends the caller to voicemail. Apple notes an exception: in some countries or regions, a declined call disconnects instead of going to voicemail. The exact result therefore depends partly on local carrier and regional behavior.

Tap Decline
If the incoming-call interface shows a Decline button, tap it. This performs the same reject action as the two quick side-button presses.
Swipe up on the call banner
When the call appears as a banner, swipe up on that banner to decline it. This is useful when the banner is already visible and you want to avoid pressing a physical button.
The available presentation can vary with what is on screen, but the underlying distinction remains the same: Decline, a banner swipe up, and two quick side-button presses reject the call; a single button press does not.
Do not confuse silencing with declining
Press the side button once, or press either volume button once, while the call is coming in. The ringtone stops, but the call remains active and answerable. You can still answer it before it reaches voicemail.

Choose voicemail or a text reply instead of simply declining
Tap the incoming-call banner to open additional choices. Select Voicemail when you want the caller to leave a message rather than simply dismissing the call. This is a deliberate alternative to the immediate decline gesture.
Select Message when you want to explain that you cannot answer. The iPhone lets you choose a default reply or compose a custom one. The wording and number of saved replies are managed in Phone settings.
Edit the saved “Respond with Text” replies
- Open Settings.
- Tap Apps.
- Choose Phone.
- Tap Respond with Text.
- Edit the saved replies that appear when you choose Message for an incoming call.
Editing these replies is useful if the standard messages do not match how you normally communicate. It does not change the side-button or Decline behavior.

What the caller experiences after you decline
In the usual case, declining transfers the caller to voicemail. The caller may then leave a message according to the voicemail service available for your line. Apple documents a regional exception in which declining disconnects the call instead of sending it to voicemail, so do not assume voicemail will be offered in every country or region.

Silencing produces a different outcome. The caller is not rejected by that action, and you retain the opportunity to answer while the call continues ringing silently. If you need the call gone immediately, use the double side-button press, the on-screen Decline control, or the banner swipe-up gesture.
Which action should you use?
You need the call to stop now
Use two quick presses of the side button. It is the least dependent on what is displayed and avoids accidentally leaving the call available to answer.

You want to keep the option to answer
Press the side button once or either volume button. The phone becomes quiet while the call remains answerable until voicemail takes over.
You want the caller to leave a message
Open the call banner and tap Voicemail. This states your intended outcome more explicitly than relying on the default behavior of a declined call.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
One side-button press was not a decline
A single press silences the ring. If the caller is still on the line and you need to reject the call, press the side button twice quickly or use an on-screen decline control.
Rank #4
A volume-button press did not reject the call
Either volume button also only mutes the ringtone. The call remains answerable. Use the double side-button gesture, Decline, or swipe up on the banner to reject it.
You cannot find the Decline button
Tap the incoming-call banner to reveal the available call actions. Depending on the presentation, you may be able to choose Voicemail or Message; when the banner itself is visible, swiping up is an on-screen decline method.
The call did not reach voicemail
Apple documents that some countries or regions disconnect a declined call rather than routing it to voicemail. That behavior is not necessarily a problem with your button press. If voicemail is important, use the banner’s Voicemail option when it is available.

Manually declining one call is different from iPhone’s broader call-management features for unknown numbers. Apple also documents options that can screen or silence unsaved callers and send them to voicemail. Those settings are intended for repeated or unfamiliar callers, not for deciding what to do with one call that is currently ringing. Their exact labels and placement can depend on the iOS guide version.
Quick Recap

iOS version and model scope
These instructions follow Apple’s iPhone User Guide for iOS 26. Apple presents the side-button, banner, voicemail, and message actions as general iPhone guidance and does not identify a model-by-model limitation for declining calls. The result of a declined call can still vary by country or region because of local phone-service behavior.
