Deck of Haunts has adjustable difficulty rather than a published list of named Easy, Normal, and Hard presets. Its separate Nightmare Mode contains 13 escalating nightmares, each lasting 13 nights, with accumulating modifiers and new threats. On Steam, you can use a controller or a mouse-only setup, and the accessibility menu covers text size, subtitles, camera comfort, volume, timed input, and more. Steam Deck is Verified, while the announced console editions cover Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
How difficulty works in Deck of Haunts
Adjustable difficulty is documented, but preset names are not
The Steam store lists Adjustable Difficulty as a gameplay accessibility feature. That confirms you can tune the challenge, but the official store material does not publish a complete set of standard preset names. Do not assume that the game has a verified Easy/Normal/Hard or similar three-step menu.

If you are looking for a conventional difficulty selector, open the game’s current settings or new-game configuration screen and read the labels shown in your build. The available wording can change with an update or differ between platforms. The safest description is that the game offers adjustable difficulty, not that it exposes a particular set of named presets.

Nightmare Mode is a separate escalating challenge
Nightmare Mode is described separately from the adjustable-difficulty feature. The official description says: “Face 13 escalating Nightmares of 13 nights each, complete with accumulating modifiers and new threats.” In practical terms, the mode is built as a sequence of 13 challenges. Each nightmare lasts 13 nights, and the pressure rises as modifiers accumulate and additional threats appear.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
That structure makes Nightmare Mode different from simply moving a slider to a higher value. A standard adjustable setting is useful when you want to tailor the baseline challenge. Nightmare Mode is the choice when you want a defined escalation that changes the conditions of successive runs. Because the published description does not enumerate every modifier or threat, the exact contents of each nightmare should be learned from the in-game briefing rather than guessed from a universal checklist.
Which option should you choose?
- For a first run: use the adjustable setting that gives you time to learn the haunted-house systems, then change it if the pace is too forgiving or too punishing.
- For a controlled challenge: keep the adjustable difficulty and make one change at a time, so you can tell whether a new setting improves the experience.
- For escalating rules and new threats: choose Nightmare Mode when you want the 13-night format and accumulating modifiers rather than a single static difficulty level.
The game’s official material does not state whether changing the adjustable difficulty is permitted mid-run, whether Nightmare progress carries between attempts, or whether every platform exposes identical controls. Check the confirmation text in your version before starting a long run.
Controls: controller, mouse, and keyboard options
Full controller support
The Steam listing marks Deck of Haunts as having Full Controller Support. Controller-focused updates released in September 2026 expanded the number of tasks that can be performed without reaching for a mouse or keyboard:
- Camera rotation uses the left joystick horizontally while you hold R3.
- Building-preview movement was made smoother.
- Holding the select button lets you place multi-tile buildings.
- Card tooltips include controller guidance.
- The gameplay log can be opened with a controller.
- Menu navigation was broadened beyond the original controller paths.
These notes describe supported capabilities, not a complete binding chart. Exact button assignments can vary by controller layout and future patches, so use the game’s controls screen for the authoritative mapping. If a familiar action appears unavailable, check whether the updated menu navigation or a contextual tooltip exposes it.

Mouse-only play
Steam also lists a Mouse Only Option. This is useful if you prefer pointer-driven placement and menu selection, or if holding a gamepad is uncomfortable. Mouse-only support does not mean every keyboard shortcut disappears; it means the game provides a way to play without requiring keyboard input for the core interaction. Verify the current on-screen prompts in your build before disabling other input devices.
Keyboard bindings and saving changes
The official update feed records a fix for key-binding saving. If a remapped key appears to revert, first confirm that the game is updated, apply the change again in the controls screen, and leave the menu through its normal confirmation route. If the setting still does not persist, compare the displayed binding after reopening the menu; that distinguishes a save problem from a control conflict or a layout change.
Accessibility settings on Steam
Steam lists seven accessibility categories. They address challenge, visual comfort, audio, timing, and input method rather than treating accessibility as a single on/off switch.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute| Setting | Category | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable difficulty | Gameplay | Tunes the game’s challenge without relying on an unverified set of named presets. |
| Adjustable text size | Visual | Increases or decreases interface text for readability. |
| Subtitle options | Visual | Controls subtitle availability or presentation where subtitles are used. |
| Camera comfort | Visual | Provides camera-related comfort controls for players sensitive to motion or presentation. |
| Custom volume controls | Audio | Lets you balance audio categories instead of relying only on one master volume. |
| Playable without timed input | Input and gameplay | Removes the requirement to complete actions within a strict timing window where the option applies. |
| Mouse-only option | Input | Supports a play style that does not require keyboard input for core interaction. |
Text size, brightness, and small interface elements
An official update added a brightness slider. Another fix corrected text scaling in gameplay cards, room tooltips, logs, collection screens, and unlock screens. If text is difficult to read or rooms are too dark, make those changes before committing to a long run rather than waiting for a problem during a timed decision.

- Open the current Settings or Options menu and locate the accessibility, display, or visual controls page.
- Increase text size until cards, room tooltips, the gameplay log, collection entries, and unlock information can be read at your normal viewing distance.
- Adjust brightness for the display and room scenes you actually use; a setting that looks comfortable in a bright menu may be too dark in gameplay.
- Open a card, tooltip, log entry, and collection screen to confirm that scaling is applied consistently after the update fix.
Subtitles, audio, and camera comfort
Subtitle options are listed as a visual accessibility feature, while custom volume controls are listed under audio. Use subtitles when reading is more reliable than listening, and separate volume controls when one audio layer masks another. Camera comfort is a distinct setting, so look for it rather than assuming that a general sensitivity slider provides the same relief. The published listing does not specify every camera behavior or audio channel, so the labels and preview in your version are the best guide to the available adjustments.
Playing without timed input
The “Playable without timed input” option is important if rapid reactions, countdowns, or narrow input windows create a barrier. It is described as an accessibility feature, not as a separate difficulty mode. Turning it on changes how timing-dependent interactions are handled; it does not automatically select Nightmare Mode or replace the adjustable-difficulty setting.
PlayStation accessibility labels and cross-platform differences
The PlayStation Store listing adds four labels: Adjustable Difficulty (Basic), Control Reminders, Tutorial Reminders, and Game Pausing. It also says players can review controls at any time. Those labels are useful when evaluating the PlayStation edition, but they should not be treated as a one-to-one transcription of Steam’s menu. A console label such as “Basic” may describe the scope of that platform’s difficulty control rather than a named Easy mode.

Steam Deck and console release information
Steam Deck status
The Steam page lists Deck of Haunts as Steam Deck Verified. That is the platform certification readers should use when deciding whether the Steam version is intended to work well on Deck. Verification does not replace checking your preferred text size, brightness, camera comfort, or control layout; those are personal settings even on a certified device.
Announced console versions
The official console announcement lists versions for Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S, with October 8, 2026 given as the launch date. Store availability, regional timing, and update parity can differ, so confirm the listing for your territory. The announcement establishes the platforms and date; it does not provide a complete feature-by-feature matrix for every console edition.

A practical setup sequence before your first run
- Choose your input method. Connect a controller if you want analog camera movement and controller prompts, or enable the mouse-only approach if pointer input is more comfortable.
- Check the controls page. Confirm camera rotation, building actions, card navigation, gameplay-log access, and menu navigation. Use the exact bindings shown by your current version rather than a generic chart.
- Set readability first. Increase text size and test a card, tooltip, log, collection entry, and unlock screen.
- Set visual comfort. Adjust brightness and camera comfort before starting a run. The brightness slider is especially useful when dark rooms make small interface elements harder to distinguish.
- Choose the challenge. Start with adjustable difficulty if you want a tunable baseline. Select Nightmare Mode when you specifically want 13 escalating nightmares of 13 nights each.
- Decide how timing should work. Enable play without timed input if strict windows are a barrier, and use subtitle or custom-volume options to make information easier to follow.
- Recheck after updates. Controller navigation, text scaling, and saved bindings have all received fixes or improvements, so revisit the relevant page after a major patch.
Troubleshooting common control and accessibility problems
The camera does not rotate with the controller
Use the documented combination: hold R3 and move the left joystick horizontally. This behavior was added in a controller update, so update the game before concluding that the function is missing. Then confirm the binding in the in-game controls screen.
Building feels imprecise or multi-tile placement is slow
The 2026 controller improvements made building-preview movement smoother and added multi-tile building by holding the select button. Look for the hold instruction in the building prompt or controller tooltip; tapping the button may perform a different action.
Cards, logs, or collection screens still use tiny text
Increase text size, then check each affected screen separately. The update that corrected scaling covered gameplay cards, room tooltips, logs, collection, and unlock screens, so a screen that remains unchanged may indicate an outdated build or a setting that was not saved.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A remapped key disappears
Reopen the controls page after applying the binding and verify that the new key is displayed. The official update feed records a fix for key-binding saving; running the latest version is therefore the first check before trying a different layout.
The game is too dark or uncomfortable to watch
Use the brightness slider and camera-comfort controls independently. Brightness addresses visibility, while camera comfort addresses how the view is presented. Changing one should not be treated as a substitute for the other.
Quick Recap
What the available options mean for different players
- Mouse-and-keyboard players: the mouse-only option can remove the need for keyboard input during core play, while the controls page remains the authority for any shortcuts you still want.
- Controller players: full controller support now covers camera rotation, building, cards, logs, and broader menus, with contextual tooltips to reduce memorization.
- Players sensitive to motion or visual strain: use camera comfort, text-size controls, brightness, subtitles, and custom volume controls together rather than relying on one setting.
- Players who need more time: the playable-without-timed-input option addresses timing pressure without requiring Nightmare Mode or another fixed challenge preset.
- Players choosing hardware: Steam Deck has Verified status; the announced console family includes Switch, Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.
