Later nights in Deck of Haunts are won by consistency, not by collecting the most dramatic cards. Commit to one damage, drain, fear, trap, or room-control plan; remove weak starter cards quickly; and build a mansion that forces intruders through spaces where you can weaken or finish them. A compact deck and a defensible route make key cards appear on time while keeping the heart behind several controlled decisions.

What you are trying to control

Deck of Haunts is a dark deckbuilding strategy game by Mantis Games in which you play the haunted house. Each night has a visitation phase, when intruders move through the mansion, and a construction phase, when you shape rooms and manage your deck. The standard run lasts 28 nights, so a plan that works once but becomes unreliable later is not enough.

Your two systems are inseparable. Cards determine what you can do during a visit, while room placement determines where those effects matter. A powerful damage card is less useful if intruders can bypass the room where it is strongest. Conversely, a modest haunting can survive difficult nights when the layout repeatedly funnels threats through damage, traps, fear, or rooms where a defeated intruder creates a barrier for those behind it.

The core objective remains simple: eliminate intruders before they reach the heart. The practical challenge is making every draw and every room decision support that objective instead of pulling the run in several incompatible directions.

Choose a plan before you choose rewards

Every reward should answer one question: does this card advance the strategy that will carry the run to night 28? A merely useful card can still be harmful if it dilutes the draw pile and delays the cards your engine needs.

Damage package

A damage plan aims to reduce intruders directly and finish them before they reach the heart. It benefits most from a route that gives damage rooms repeated contact with the same targets. Do not add unrelated fear or economy cards just because they are individually efficient; they can make the damage package appear too slowly on later nights.

Drain package

Drain-focused builds use attrition to keep intruders from remaining effective as they advance. They need enough time and room length for that attrition to matter, so a very short route or an uncontrolled side entrance undermines the plan. Favor cards and rooms that keep threats in the mansion long enough for the drain effects to accumulate.

Fear package

Fear is a control strategy as much as a source of damage. It can disrupt the order in which threats arrive at the heart and can make a finished intruder useful as a barrier for humans who follow. A fear plan still needs a reliable way to finish dangerous targets; delaying every intruder without removing the most threatening one simply postpones the failure.

Trap package

Trap builds depend on predictable movement. Place traps where an intruder must pass rather than in an attractive-looking room that a side route can bypass. Traps are strongest when the rest of the deck and layout make the enemy path repeatable, allowing each draw to reinforce the same sequence.

Room-control package

A room-control plan treats the mansion itself as the engine. The deck supports the rooms by changing routes, concentrating threats, or making a particular room safer for a finishing action. This approach can be less explosive than a pure damage plan, but it is often more resilient when objectives and enemy paths change.

Plan What it needs Common failure How to evaluate it
Damage Repeated access to damage rooms and a dependable finisher Damage is split across too many rooms or delayed by a bloated deck Can the key damage cards appear before the lead threat reaches the heart?
Drain Enough route length and repeated contact Intruders bypass the drain route or reach the heart before attrition matters Does each turn reduce the threat rather than merely consume actions?
Fear Control over timing, positioning, and finishing opportunities Threats are delayed but not removed Does fear create a safer route or a useful barrier?
Traps Predictable paths and carefully placed trigger rooms Side entrances make the traps irrelevant How many likely routes cross the trap network?
Room control Cards that reinforce a specific geometry The deck contains effects that do not improve the chosen layout Does the mansion force several meaningful decisions before the heart?

These labels are planning tools, not rigid classes. A hybrid is worthwhile when the components reinforce one another—for example, traps that make a damage route predictable. A hybrid assembled from unrelated “good” cards is usually just a larger, slower deck.

Thin the deck early and protect draw consistency

The most important later-run improvement is often removing a weak card rather than adding a new one. A Steam Community strategy discussion puts the principle plainly: “Don’t invest in any cards that aren’t part of a solid plan that will carry you through to the end of the run.” The same discussion advises that “By mid run you need to have a way to quickly banish the weak cards from your starting deck.” Treat that as player advice, not as an official developer rule, but it describes the consistency problem accurately.

Use this reward routine

  1. Name the run’s package. Decide whether the next several nights are built around damage, drain, fear, traps, room control, or a clearly defined combination.
  2. Inspect every reward for dilution. Skip a card when it is merely average and does not improve that package. A reward is not automatically positive if it makes the key cards less likely to appear.
  3. Remove starter clutter early. Use available removal to eliminate cards that remain in circulation but do not contribute to the plan. Early thinning improves every later draw.
  4. Reserve Sacrifice Room for permanent clutter. Sacrifice Room is most valuable when it removes a card that would otherwise keep returning. Do not spend a limited sacrifice effect on a card that already banishes itself.
  5. Let self-banish cards do their job. If a card removes itself under its normal condition, play it and allow that effect to reduce the deck before using Sacrifice Room elsewhere.
  6. Recheck after every reward. Ask which cards are now essential, which are temporary, and whether the latest addition changes the route or only adds another isolated effect.

The target is practical rather than numerical: by the middle of a run, after roughly three or four turns of a night, your draw deck and total usable deck should be close enough that important cards appear consistently. If the deck still contains many weak starters at that point, adding more rewards usually makes the problem worse.

When Sacrifice Room is the right choice

Take Sacrifice Room when it advances the deck’s long-term plan, not simply because it is available. The best target is a card that is weak, remains in circulation, and competes with a key card for the same draw. A card that self-banishes, or one that is temporarily weak but required by the chosen package, is a poor target.

Before sacrificing, check three things:

  • Will removing this card make the next few nights more predictable?
  • Does the card have a self-banish or other automatic exit you should wait for?
  • Would another removal target leave the deck with a stronger damage, fear, trap, drain, or room-control sequence?

Do not sacrifice solely to make the deck smaller if the remaining cards no longer support a coherent plan. A thin deck of mismatched effects can be less useful than a slightly larger deck with a repeatable sequence.

Build a mansion that controls the route

A haphazard layout gives later threats and Pathfinders easy routes through the mansion. Start with a compact, defensible route, then revise it as special-room cards and enemy paths appear. The correct question is not “Which room looks strongest?” but “Where will this threat have to go, and what happens if it avoids my intended entrance?”

Map the threat before placing rooms

  1. Mark every likely entry. Identify the normal entrance and any side entrance that a threat can use. A route that works only from the front is incomplete.
  2. Trace the shortest path to the heart. Follow the route a Pathfinder or other priority threat would take if you changed nothing.
  3. Place control before decoration. Put damage rooms, traps, fear spaces, or other key rooms where movement is forced rather than where there is spare space.
  4. Keep the heart behind multiple decisions. The heart should not sit at the end of one long corridor that an intruder can traverse without being delayed, damaged, or redirected.
  5. Recalculate after special rooms appear. A new room can make an old route safe, or make a previously reliable choke point irrelevant. Update the path instead of defending yesterday’s layout.

Use corpses and fear as spatial tools

Running damage is partly a geometry problem. Traps and damage rooms weaken visitors while they move; finishing them in a controlled room near the heart can turn corpses into fear barriers for humans who follow. This is stronger than finishing an intruder in an isolated corner where the result does not influence the next threat.

That does not mean every fight should happen next to the heart. A controlled finishing room is useful only when the preceding route has already reduced the threat and when the resulting barrier does not block your own intended actions. Place the finishing point where it changes the behavior of the next intruder.

Test the layout against bypasses

Run a mental stress test whenever the mansion changes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What if the first threat enters through the expected route?
  • What if a Pathfinder chooses the alternative route?
  • Which room absorbs the first hit, and which room finishes the target?
  • Can a second intruder follow immediately, or does the first body create useful fear?
  • If the key room is unavailable in the next draw, does the route still keep the heart safe?

A layout that passes only the first question is fragile. Later nights punish routes that assume enemies behave exactly as they did on the previous visit.

Turn the nightly phases into a repeatable process

During visitation

  1. Read the whole threat set. Note entrances, priority targets, Pathfinders, and any objective that changes what “safe” means for this night.
  2. Identify the first irreversible risk. Decide which intruder becomes dangerous if it reaches the next room, not merely which one has the largest visible number.
  3. Spend actions to preserve the route. A card that keeps enemies on the controlled path can be worth more than a larger one-time effect that lets the route collapse.
  4. Finish where the result matters. When possible, eliminate a weakened intruder in a controlled room near the heart so its corpse or fear effect influences followers.
  5. Watch the side entrance. If a bypass appears, switch from the ideal sequence to the emergency line that protects the heart first.

During construction

  1. Review the deck before buying or accepting anything. Count the cards that support the chosen package and the cards that merely consume draws.
  2. Improve the route before adding ornament. A room that closes a bypass or creates a reliable trap line usually matters more than an isolated effect.
  3. Use removal deliberately. Sacrifice a persistent weak card when it improves consistency; leave self-banish cards alone until they have removed themselves.
  4. Rehearse the next visitation. Trace the likely path from every entrance and confirm that the key card can arrive within the first few turns.

This rhythm prevents a common late-run mistake: treating construction as a shopping phase and visitation as a reaction phase. Both are planning phases. Construction determines the choices available at visitation, and visitation reveals which construction assumption failed.

Compare builds by repeatability, not peak numbers

When two builds appear close, compare them on four axes. This is more useful than choosing the one that displays the largest single effect.

Axis Question to ask Warning sign
Deck consistency How quickly do weak cards leave, and how reliably does the key package appear? The build needs a perfect draw or still carries many starter cards mid-run.
Essence and action efficiency Do the rooms and cards deliver enough value for what they cost? A large effect consumes the turn but does not improve the route or remove a threat.
Route control Can the mansion force intruders through damage, trap, or fear spaces? A side entrance or Pathfinder can reach the heart without crossing the engine.
Threat resilience Can the plan handle stronger visitors, changing objectives, and multiple entrances? The strategy works only against the first enemy pattern encountered.

A smaller, repeatable engine is normally better for later nights than a spectacular turn followed by several dead draws. If a candidate build produces impressive numbers but leaves the heart exposed or the deck bloated, treat that as a failed plan rather than a high-roll success.

Version differences can change the correct answer

The commonly circulated beginner guide is explicitly written around version 1.03. SteamDB records later version 1.39 content and interface updates, including new missions and rewards. Because of that gap, exact card values, room costs, reward pools, and threat behavior are version-sensitive.

Use the strategic principles above across versions, but verify numerical details in the build you are playing before making a tier list or copying a precise route. If a room cost, reward, or enemy behavior differs from an older guide, trust the current in-game description and rebuild the plan around the same four tests: consistency, efficiency, route control, and resilience.

Troubleshoot a run that is already failing

Key cards never appear

Stop adding rewards and inspect the draw pile. Remove persistent starter clutter, allow self-banish cards to exit naturally, and use Sacrifice Room on a card that remains in circulation without supporting the plan. If the deck is still broad, choose one package instead of trying to rescue every effect.

Intruders reach the heart through a side route

Redraw the threat map from that entrance. Move a control room to the forced path, close the bypass if the current construction options allow it, and keep the heart behind another decision point. Do not assume the front route will become relevant again just because it worked on the previous night.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Damage is high but the night still collapses

Check where the damage happens. If it is spread across rooms that intruders can skip, the displayed total is misleading. Concentrate damage or traps on a route you can force, then reserve a controlled finishing room near the heart when a corpse or fear barrier will influence the next visitor.

Fear delays threats without solving them

Use fear to create timing and positioning advantages, then identify the card or room that actually finishes the priority target. A delay is valuable only when it buys a safer route, a better draw, or a barrier that changes the next encounter.

The layout worked early but fails on later nights

Assume the route has become predictable or the threat set has changed. Recheck Pathfinders, side entrances, special-room effects, and the location of the heart. Later runs require the mansion to adapt; preserving an old layout is not the same as preserving a successful strategy.

Practical checklist before committing to the next night

  • Can you describe the run’s main package in one sentence?
  • Does every non-starter card support that package or its route?
  • Which persistent weak card will leave next, and is Sacrifice Room being reserved for it?
  • Which cards self-banish and therefore should not consume a limited removal effect?
  • Where does each threat enter, including side entrances?
  • Which room damages or stalls the threat, and which room finishes it?
  • What happens if a Pathfinder bypasses the front route?
  • Is the heart protected by more than one controlled decision?
  • After roughly three or four turns of a night, will the important cards be available consistently?
  • Are any exact costs, values, or behaviors copied from an older version rather than checked in the current build?

Later-run survival comes from making the same useful decisions repeatedly: a deck that draws its engine, a route that forces intruders to encounter it, and a heart that is never protected by only one assumption.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many cards should I add during a run?

There is no universal quota. Add a card only when it strengthens the package carrying the run; otherwise, skipping the reward protects draw consistency.

Should I always choose Sacrifice Room when it appears?

No. Use it when it removes persistent clutter that does not self-banish and when the resulting deck is more coherent. Sacrificing a card that would remove itself wastes the effect.

Why do older guides disagree with the current game?

The widely circulated beginner guide is based on version 1.03, while later version 1.39 updates added missions, rewards, and interface changes. Verify exact values and behaviors in your current build.
