Death Stranding vs. Death Stranding 2: Which Game Should You Play First?

Play Death Stranding first, ideally Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5, and then move to DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH. The sequel is officially a standalone game, so a newcomer can start there. However, it follows Sam eleven months after the original and brings back relationships whose emotional impact depends on what came before. Starting with the first game gives you the intended introduction to Sam, the setting, the series’ terminology and the stakes behind the sequel.

Start with Death Stranding 2 only if faster pacing, earlier access to equipment and a newer set of systems matter more to you than complete narrative context.

The quick decision

There are two sensible orders, but they are not equally good for every player:

  • Story-first newcomer: Play Death Stranding, preferably Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5, then play DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH.
  • Systems-first newcomer: You can begin with DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH. Its standalone positioning and faster onboarding make that route viable, but you will accept missing context about Sam and the world.
  • Returning player: Go straight to DEATH STRANDING 2: ON THE BEACH unless you specifically want to revisit the original in its expanded PS5 edition.

The first game launched on PS4 on November 8, 2019. The current PS5 version of that game is Death Stranding Director’s Cut, released on September 24, 2021. The sequel is a later chapter rather than a disconnected anthology entry.

The table explains why the recommendation is conditional rather than absolute. The sequel removes the need to own or finish the first game before launching it, but release order still gives the cleanest narrative progression.

Is Death Stranding 2 a direct sequel?

Yes, in story terms it is a continuation of the original, even though Kojima Productions describes it as a standalone sequel. “Standalone” means the game is designed to be playable without requiring a completed save file or a previous purchase. It does not mean that the characters, relationships or history have been reset.

The sequel’s story is set eleven months after Death Stranding. Both games follow Sam, so events that are introductions in the first game become established history in the second. A new player can understand the immediate objective in Death Stranding 2, but may not attach the same meaning to returning people, institutions or terminology as someone who experienced their original introductions.

That distinction matters most if you play for character drama and world-building. The first game establishes why isolated communities matter and what reconnecting a fragmented society means. The sequel can explain enough to keep a new player moving, while still treating parts of that foundation as knowledge Sam and the returning cast already possess.

Why play Death Stranding first?

You get Sam’s complete starting point

Beginning with the original lets you meet Sam at the point where his role, obligations and relationships are being established. You see the world’s fractured condition before the sequel asks you to care about its next stage. That makes the sequel’s continuation feel like progression instead of exposition delivered after the fact.

The terminology arrives in the intended order

Death Stranding introduces the series’ vocabulary alongside its world. Learning those ideas while Sam learns them gives you a stable reference for the second game. If you reverse the order, the sequel’s standalone explanations can keep the plot legible, but you may encounter terms first as assumed background and only later discover their original significance.

Returning relationships carry more weight

The sequel follows the same central character and continues relationships from the first game. Playing in release order means you have seen those relationships form, change and acquire stakes before the new chapter asks you to interpret them. This is the strongest reason for the original-first order; it is about emotional context, not merely avoiding spoilers.

You see the original design before its expansion

The first game’s core idea is reconnecting isolated communities in a fractured America. Experiencing that framework before the sequel expands the journey to Mexico and Australia gives you a clear baseline. You can identify what Death Stranding 2 is extending rather than treating every mechanic and location as a first exposure.

When starting with Death Stranding 2 makes sense

You want a quicker opening rhythm

PlayStation’s hands-on report says Death Stranding 2 moves faster and gives players equipment and structures earlier. If you are worried that a slower introduction will prevent you from committing to the series, the sequel offers the more immediate onboarding route documented in the available material.

You care more about the newest toolset than chronology

The sequel adds tools, weapons and vehicles to the series’ established framework. Players who choose games primarily for the latest traversal and equipment options may reasonably prefer to start with the newer system set, accepting that the story will have less personal history behind it.

You are testing the series rather than committing to two long campaigns

If you have time or budget for only one game right now, beginning with the standalone sequel is defensible. You will get the newer entry’s presentation and systems without first purchasing the original. The trade-off is that, if the sequel convinces you to go back, you will experience the earlier chapter out of order.

You have already absorbed the original’s premise elsewhere

Some players know the first game’s broad setup, characters or ending through prior play, videos or discussions. In that case, the context advantage of replaying it may be smaller. A first-time player who wants the full intended arc should still choose the original first; this exception is mainly for people who already know its story.

How pacing and onboarding differ

The most concrete contrast in the available evidence is not a completion-time number; no authoritative head-to-head completion-time statistic was established. It is the way each game introduces its systems.

  • Death Stranding: serves as the foundational introduction. Its job is to establish the fractured America, the reconnection mission and Sam’s place in that process.
  • Death Stranding 2: is described by PlayStation as faster, with equipment and structures made available earlier. That can reduce the time between learning the premise and using a broader set of options.

“Faster” should not be read as a promise that every part of the sequel is short or that every player will prefer its rhythm. It describes the early flow and the timing of access to equipment and structures in PlayStation’s hands-on account. The original-first order remains preferable when learning the world in sequence matters more than reaching the expanded toolset quickly.

World scope: what changes between the games?

The original’s reconnecting mission

Hideo Kojima’s official 2019 launch announcement described Death Stranding as “a completely new type of action game, where the goal of the player is to reconnect isolated cities and a fragmented society.” That statement is the clearest one-sentence description of the original’s purpose. The game’s setting is a fractured America, and its journey is organized around bringing separated communities into a network.

The sequel’s larger geography

Death Stranding 2 expands the journey to Mexico and Australia. The larger geographic scope does not erase the original’s premise; it takes the idea of connection into new places. Playing the first game first lets you recognize that expansion as a development of the series’ central concern rather than simply a change of scenery.

Geographic scale alone is not a reason to reverse the order. It is a reason to understand what is being expanded. If a broader map and newer equipment are your primary interests, the sequel-first route is valid. If you want the series’ world to unfold from its initial fracture outward, play in release order.

Systems, equipment and hardware choices

The sequel adds tools, weapons and vehicles, while the original remains the entry that establishes the series’ baseline systems. That difference creates a simple hardware and purchase decision:

A decision framework for different players

Choose the original first if you answer “yes” to most of these

  • Do you want Sam’s relationships to have their full setup before the sequel?
  • Do you prefer release-order storytelling?
  • Do you enjoy learning a fictional world’s terminology from its starting point?
  • Do you want the sequel’s larger geography to feel like an expansion of an established idea?
  • Are you willing to spend time with the slower foundational onboarding described above?

Choose the sequel first if these priorities dominate

  • Do you want the faster opening rhythm reported by PlayStation?
  • Do you want earlier access to equipment and structures?
  • Are tools, weapons and vehicles more important to you than complete backstory?
  • Do you want to test the series with one standalone entry before buying both?
  • Have you already experienced or learned the original’s major story context?

Neither choice is a mistake. The distinction is between maximum context and minimum onboarding friction. The first game wins the former; the sequel is the more accommodating entry for the latter.

Recommended play order, step by step

  1. Start with Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5. Treat it as the original game’s expanded PS5 edition, not as a separate timeline.
  2. Play through the original before judging the sequel’s callbacks. The value of returning relationships depends on seeing their initial context.
  3. Move to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. You will then encounter the sequel’s faster onboarding, additional tools, weapons and vehicles as extensions of systems you already understand.
  4. Use the platform that fits your hardware. The sequel’s PC release was announced for March 19, 2026; check the current regional listing before purchasing.
  5. If you reverse the order, set expectations correctly. The sequel is playable as a standalone game, but return to the original afterward only if you are comfortable experiencing the series’ history nonchronologically.

What the available ratings do—and do not—tell you

Steam’s snapshot recorded 94% positive English user reviews for Death Stranding 2 when accessed on October 18, 2026. That figure is a moving audience signal: review totals and percentages change over time, and it does not establish a universal preferred play order. It can indicate that the sequel has been received positively by that segment of Steam users, but it cannot answer whether your priorities are story context or faster systems.

No authoritative comparison of completion times and no survey establishing one universally preferred order were identified. Do not use an unverified “hours to finish” claim as the deciding factor. Choose based on continuity, onboarding and the type of first impression you want.

Final recommendation

For a new player, buy Death Stranding Director’s Cut on PS5 and play it before Death Stranding 2: On the Beach. That order introduces Sam, the fractured America and the reconnection mission before the sequel continues them eleven months later and broadens the journey to Mexico and Australia.

Start with Death Stranding 2 only when its faster pacing, earlier equipment and newer tools, weapons and vehicles outweigh the benefits of chronological and emotional context. It is a legitimate entry point because it is officially standalone; it is simply not the strongest first choice for a story-focused newcomer.
