Calibrate HDR with your display, preserve readable terrain and cargo, and disable vibration, trigger resistance, blur, or camera effects whenever they cause discomfort.
Start with the setting that matches your priority
There is no single “best” preset for every screen. A large television viewed from a sofa, a desk monitor, and a handheld-sized display reveal different compromises. Decide whether you notice uneven motion, soft detail, crushed shadows, or physical discomfort first, then change the smallest number of settings that addresses that problem.

| Priority | Recommended starting point | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Smoother camera movement and traversal | PS5 Performance Mode, or a PC frame-rate target your hardware can sustain | PS5 uses scaled rather than native 4K; PC may show more upscaling artifacts |
| Maximum fine detail | PS5 Fidelity Mode, or higher PC render resolution | More demanding rendering can reduce motion consistency |
| Dark-area readability | Correct HDR calibration and moderate in-game brightness | Too much brightness turns black areas gray |
| Long-session comfort | Lower blur, vibration, trigger resistance, and camera effects as needed | Some tactile or cinematic feedback is reduced |
PS5 Director’s Cut: Performance or Fidelity?
The PS5 Director’s Cut lists two distinct picture modes. PlayStation Store specifications describe Performance Mode as scaled 4K with up to 60 FPS and Fidelity Mode as native 4K. Treat those descriptions as targets, not a promise that every scene will run at an identical frame rate; scene complexity, display settings, and software updates can affect the result.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsChoose Performance Mode for motion consistency
Use Performance Mode when you are sensitive to judder during camera pans, vehicle travel, or quick route corrections. The higher frame-rate target makes aiming the camera and reading movement over uneven ground feel more immediate. It is usually the better choice for a 120 Hz television or for anyone who values responsive traversal over pixel-level sharpness.

- Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions through haptic feedback
- Experience varying levels of force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone and connect a headset directly through the 3.5mm jack
- Switch voice capture on and off using the dedicated mute button
- Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5
Judge the mode from your normal playing distance while walking, climbing, and turning the camera. A paused close-up of Sam’s face or a cargo label exaggerates the resolution difference and does not represent ordinary play.
Choose Fidelity Mode for native 4K detail
Fidelity Mode is appropriate when your screen is large, your seating position is close enough to reveal fine detail, and motion consistency is less important than native-resolution clarity. Terrain textures, structures, and distant geometry can look more defined. If camera movement feels tiring or visibly uneven, return to Performance Mode; sharper still images do not compensate for distracting motion.
Keep the comparison fair
- Use the same HDR and television picture preset for both modes.
- Compare a normal delivery route, not only a menu or paused image.
- Give each mode several minutes so your eyes adapt to its motion and sharpness.
- Pick the mode that keeps terrain edges, cargo, and nearby hazards easiest to track.
PC: build a stable frame-time baseline
The PC release exposes customized graphics, uncapped frame rates, DLSS, FSR, XeSS, other upscaling options, and frame-generation technologies. The official announcement archive lists these capabilities: Death Stranding PC announcements. Because PC hardware, resolution, drivers, and patches differ, no universal FPS number can be promised.
Set a sustainable frame-rate target
- Start at your monitor’s native resolution and choose a frame-rate limit your system can maintain during busy traversal and story sequences.
- Play a repeatable route that includes terrain streaming, weather, structures, and a vehicle or cargo load.
- If frame time spikes, lower one demanding quality control at a time rather than dropping every option to Low.
- Keep each change that removes hitching while preserving readable terrain and cargo.
- Only then experiment with an uncapped frame rate or frame generation; a higher displayed number is not useful if input response or frame pacing feels inconsistent.
Use upscaling without sacrificing route readability
DLSS, FSR, XeSS, or another available scaler can raise performance by rendering internally below output resolution. Begin with the highest-quality mode that holds your target. Inspect thin structures, distant cliffs, rain, and cargo labels while moving—not just a still screenshot. If foliage or cables shimmer, move one quality step higher or reduce another costly effect instead.
Lower expensive options in stages
Change shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, ambient-occlusion quality, and crowd or object distance controls only as needed and only if those labels exist in your build. Test after every change. The useful result is a stable frame time with enough distance detail to plan a route, not a benchmark number detached from play.

Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Controller stutter troubleshooting
505 Games’ PC FAQ reports that disabling vibration can eliminate some controller-related performance problems: 505 Games PC FAQ. If stutter appears when a controller is connected or during story sequences, turn vibration off in the game and retest before changing graphics. Re-enable it later if the problem does not return; this isolates the input feature instead of permanently sacrificing tactile feedback.
HDR and brightness: make dark terrain readable without gray blacks
HDR is supported on both PC and PS5 Director’s Cut, but it only looks correct when the console or PC output and the television or monitor are configured for HDR. Start the display’s HDR mode, then open the game’s own calibration screen. Adjust the game image until its reference symbol is barely visible as instructed, and adjust the display’s HDR controls according to its on-screen guidance.
Check the signal before raising brightness
- Confirm that HDR is enabled for the HDMI input or Windows display output you are actually using.
- Use the display’s HDR picture preset rather than judging an SDR preset with HDR enabled.
- Do not raise the black level until shadow areas become gray; that masks detail by reducing contrast.
- Check a dark outdoor scene and a bright snow or sky scene after calibration.
- If HDR still looks dim, compare the game’s SDR presentation with the display in SDR. An incorrectly configured HDR signal can look worse than correctly configured SDR.
Recheck calibration after changing television picture modes, replacing a cable, moving between console and PC, or enabling a different monitor input. Keep the setting that lets you distinguish rocks, path edges, and cargo outlines without flattening the image.
Visibility, interface, and camera options
Protect information before removing the HUD
Interface elements communicate cargo condition, stamina, balance, threats, and navigation context. Keep the HUD long enough to learn those signals, then hide only items that obstruct your view. If your version provides text-size, contrast, subtitle-background, or similar accessibility controls, increase them until dialogue and prompts are readable from your normal distance. Menu names and availability differ between the original release and Director’s Cut, so use the closest equivalent label shown in your build.
Reduce blur when movement looks smeared
If camera pans leave trails or cause eye strain, lower motion blur or a similarly named camera effect if available. Disable it temporarily to confirm whether it is the cause, then restore a low value if you prefer a softer cinematic look. Blur reduction is a comfort and clarity choice, not a guaranteed performance fix.

Choose field of view for tracking, not maximum width
A wider field of view can show more surrounding terrain, but it also makes Sam, cargo, and distant threats appear smaller. A narrower view enlarges central objects but can hide hazards at the edges. Select the widest setting that still lets you read cargo status and judge footing on your display. If your edition does not expose an FOV slider, keep the default and rely on camera sensitivity and display distance instead.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteUse display distance as a visibility setting
Before changing gamma or sharpness, move closer to a monitor or adjust television seating. Excessive display sharpening can create halos around text and terrain edges, while excessive viewing distance makes every mode look soft. Use the display’s neutral picture preset when comparing game settings.

Audio and spatial awareness
Keep environmental audio and 3D Audio enabled when they help you locate threats, weather, or nearby movement. The PS5 listing specifically supports 3D Audio through compatible stereo headphones. If spatial effects sound hollow or harsh, verify the console’s headphone profile and the game’s output device before increasing volume.
Haptics and adaptive triggers
The PS5 Director’s Cut supports DualSense haptic feedback and adaptive-trigger resistance, and the listing confirms that both can be disabled. Leave them enabled when resistance while climbing, balancing, or handling equipment adds useful physical context. Lower trigger strength or switch it off if your fingers or wrists tire during repeated actions. Haptics should reinforce what is happening, not become another source of strain.
Vibration, camera movement, and nausea
Reduce controller vibration, camera shake, head-bob-like movement, or blur when they cause nausea, headaches, or hand discomfort. Change one effect at a time so you know which adjustment helped. A calmer camera and lighter vibration often preserve immersion better than forcing yourself to tolerate effects that interrupt a session.

Platform and connection caveats
Haptic and adaptive-trigger behavior depends on the supported platform, game build, and connection method. A wired or wireless PC connection may expose different features than a PS5 connection, and not every controller reproduces the same effects. Treat missing feedback as a compatibility limitation rather than a graphics defect.
A practical setup sequence
- Update the game and platform, then restore a known display preset.
- On PS5, select Performance Mode for motion or Fidelity Mode for native 4K detail.
- On PC, select a sustainable frame-rate target and native output resolution.
- Calibrate HDR in the game and on the display; verify black detail in a dark route.
- Choose an upscaler and quality level, then test terrain, cargo, weather, and distant structures while moving.
- Set HUD, subtitle, contrast, and text options for comfortable reading.
- Lower blur, camera movement, vibration, or trigger resistance if they cause discomfort.
- If PC controller stutter remains, disable vibration and retest before lowering more graphics settings.
When to change settings again
Revisit the setup after changing displays, switching between HDR and SDR, installing a patch, updating graphics drivers, or moving from desk distance to sofa distance. Also retest after connecting a controller differently. Keep a short note of your chosen mode, frame-rate cap, upscaler, HDR values, and comfort controls; that makes recovery quick when a system update resets options.
What the evidence supports
PS5 Director’s Cut officially advertises scaled 4K up to 60 FPS in Performance Mode and native 4K in Fidelity Mode. The PC feature list confirms granular graphics controls, uncapped frame rates, modern upscalers, and frame generation. HDR, haptics, adaptive triggers, vibration, and 3D Audio are platform-dependent features rather than guarantees of identical behavior across every edition. No independent benchmark establishes one universal FPS result, so your sustained frame time and readability test remain the deciding evidence for your system.
