The safest way to begin Death Stranding is to plan around terrain and cargo condition rather than taking the shortest line. Read every order requirement, tilt the map to find manageable slopes, mark several waypoints, keep the cargo indicator white, and carry equipment that matches the route. Ladders, climbing anchors, generators, roads, and ziplines become increasingly valuable, while careful Odradek scanning and controlled movement protect you from BTs, MULEs, falls, and water.

Start every delivery by reading the order, not by opening the map

Before selecting a destination, inspect the order screen for four things: where the cargo must go, what kind of cargo it is, any delivery condition, and whether a time limit applies. The shortest visible path is often a poor choice if it crosses a steep face, deep water, or a persistent Timefall area. Kojima Productions’ beginner guidance emphasizes studying the map and order details before departure because route decisions affect both delivery time and cargo condition.

Also note whether the package is unusually tall, fragile, or subject to a special orientation rule. A route that is safe for a compact container may be awkward with a high stack. If a package specifies an orientation, preserve it even when using automatic load arrangement.

Use the map as a terrain diagram

Tilt the map before committing to a line. The angled view reveals slopes that are easy to miss from the overhead view. Place several route markers rather than one destination pin: mark a pass through a mountain, a river crossing, a facility where you can rest, and the final approach. Multiple markers let you compare the ground as you move and make it easier to abandon a bad route without losing your overall plan.

Route around extreme gradients when a longer, gentler path is available. A few extra minutes on stable ground can prevent a fall, a stamina collapse, or a vehicle becoming stuck. Distribution centers and other known facilities are useful intermediate stops on long trips because they provide places to rest, resupply, fabricate equipment, and reorganize cargo.

Check the shared world, but do not depend on it

Inside Chiral Network coverage, structures and paths created by other porters can change the practical route. Look for ladders, bridges, roads, postboxes, generators, and established footpaths while planning. They are aids rather than guarantees: a bridge may not be on your exact approach, a generator may be outside your vehicle’s charging radius, and a path can still lead into water or a steep section. Confirm the terrain, battery state, and cargo arrangement yourself.

A repeatable route-planning workflow

  1. Read the order. Record the destination, cargo type, delivery conditions, and time requirement.
  2. Inspect slopes. Tilt the map and identify the gentlest line, even if it is longer.
  3. Mark a chain of waypoints. Include difficult crossings, facilities, and the final approach so you can reassess in stages.
  4. Identify rest and resupply points. Distribution centers and other safe facilities can break up a long journey.
  5. Review online structures. Use roads, bridges, ladders, generators, postboxes, and paths where they genuinely reduce risk.
  6. Match equipment to obstacles. Carry a ladder or climbing anchor for likely cliffs, a repair spray if Timefall is possible, and a suitable carrying aid or vehicle for the load.
  7. Scan as you travel. Recheck slopes and water before crossing; do not assume that a route which looked safe on the map remains safe at ground level.
  8. Slow down when your stamina drops. Drink from the canteen, rest when necessary, and use both hands to steady Sam on difficult ground.

Balance the load before leaving

The cargo screen’s color indicator is your quickest safety check. White means the load is manageable. Yellow indicates strain and reduced movement. Red means the cargo exceeds Sam’s maximum and severely harms mobility. Treat yellow as a warning to rearrange or remove something; do not begin a difficult climb with a red load unless there is no alternative.

Use Auto-Arrange Cargo to place items in a more efficient position, then inspect the result manually. Keep heavy containers close to Sam’s center of gravity and avoid a tall, unstable stack when the route includes sharp turns, narrow ledges, or MULE territory. Auto-arrangement does not override a special package’s orientation requirement, so read the instructions for unusual deliveries such as pizza before confirming the layout.

Why cargo height matters

A high or poorly balanced load can make turning more difficult, expose you above cover, and increase the chance of tumbling. It can also make Sam easier for MULEs to spot. If the order is too large for a safe on-foot configuration, use a vehicle on suitable ground, attach a floating carrier, move part of the cargo to a postbox or share locker, or make multiple trips.

Use carrying aids deliberately

  • Floaters add carrying capacity and help move bulky loads through complicated terrain.
  • Power skeletons reduce the burden of heavy cargo and make demanding routes more manageable.
  • Vehicles carry larger loads efficiently when roads or reasonably firm ground support them.
  • Postboxes and share lockers let you stash cargo temporarily when the current load is too large, then retrieve it with more capacity or a vehicle.

Protect containers from Timefall and falls

Timefall ages objects it touches. It degrades the container around your shipment rather than instantly destroying the contents, but severe container damage can eventually affect what is inside. Falls, collisions, and rough handling create additional risk. The delivery rating is primarily influenced by cargo condition, so a fast arrival with badly damaged containers can be worse than a slower, careful trip.

Carry Container Repair Spray whenever the route may enter Timefall. After a BT area, a prolonged storm, or a fall, inspect the cargo screen and repair containers before continuing if their condition has dropped. Repairing early prevents a minor problem from becoming a failed delivery later.

Techniques for safer movement

  • Reduce speed before sharp turns and at the edge of slopes.
  • Use both hands to steady Sam when crossing unstable ground.
  • Do not jump blindly across gaps with a tall load.
  • When wading, watch stamina and water depth instead of forcing a straight line.
  • Recheck the cargo after any tumble, vehicle impact, or difficult descent.

Choose equipment for the terrain

Ladders for short vertical sections

Ladders bridge cliffs, ledges, and awkward rises that would otherwise consume stamina or force a detour. Place one where the lower and upper ends sit on usable ground; a ladder that reaches the target but rests on an unstable edge is not a safe route. They are inexpensive, quick solutions for isolated obstacles and remain useful even after larger infrastructure becomes available.

Climbing anchors for steep faces and drops

Climbing anchors provide a controlled line across rocky drops and steep faces. Carry one when the map shows a descent that cannot be handled comfortably by walking. Anchors are especially useful when the return route will use the same cliff, because they turn a hazardous scramble into a predictable crossing.

Generators for battery management

A generator recharges a Reverse Trike and other battery-powered equipment. Fabricate a PCC, select Generator, and build it within the vehicle’s charging radius. Place generators before a long vehicle section or near a route where rivers and rough ground are likely to drain the battery. A generator that is visible but outside the charging radius will not solve the problem, so verify the placement indicator before constructing it.

Roads, bridges, and ziplines

Bridges and roads turn repeated crossings into faster, safer routes once you and other porters provide enough materials and the area has sufficient Chiral bandwidth. They are most valuable on regular delivery loops: the construction cost is easier to justify when the same crossing would otherwise require repeated climbs or detours.

Ziplines become especially useful in the mountains as your network expands. Community guidance from 505 Games notes that they are easier to use than trucks in rough mountain terrain. Plan a connected chain rather than building isolated lines: each segment must reach the next usable station, and the network’s practical value depends on coverage, placement, and available bandwidth.

Scan, manage stamina, and decide when to walk

Use the Odradek frequently. It helps identify safe ground, slopes, and deep water, and it gives you information about nearby hazards. Scan before entering a river, approaching a cliff, or leaving a marked path. Ground that looks shallow from a distance may be deep enough to drain stamina, destabilize Sam, or endanger cargo.

Depleted stamina weakens balance. Drink from the canteen and rest when the stamina bar is low rather than waiting for a stumble. In waist-deep water or on steep climbs, hold L2 and R2 to steady Sam and regain control. If the route remains unstable, stop and reassess the waypoint instead of pressing forward.

Walking is sometimes safer than using a vehicle. A Reverse Trike can save time on firm ground but becomes a liability on rough slopes, deep crossings, and areas where its battery drains quickly. If the Odradek shows deep red water markers, do not force the bike through: it can sink, washing away Sam and cargo. Dismounting and carrying the shipment around the obstacle is often the safer decision.

Using the Reverse Trike without losing the delivery

The Reverse Trike found near the Distribution Center west of Capital Knot City can be charged by fabricating a PCC, choosing Generator, and constructing it within range. Plan the generator before you set off if the route includes rivers or extended off-road travel.

Vehicle checks before departure

  • Confirm the cargo fits without creating an unstable stack.
  • Check the battery and identify a generator or facility along the route.
  • Look at the map for water crossings and steep, broken terrain.
  • Leave a walking alternative in your plan if the vehicle cannot safely cross an obstacle.

Rivers can drain the battery, and deep red Odradek indicators identify water capable of sinking the bike. On rough terrain, dismount early rather than waiting for the trike to become trapped. A short walk with intact cargo is preferable to a vehicle recovery problem in the middle of a delivery.

Surviving BT areas

For early BT encounters, stop when the Odradek signals danger and read its direction and movement. Hold your breath and move slowly. Sudden running can increase risk, especially when stamina is already low or the cargo is poorly balanced. Use the terrain and your route markers to leave the area by the safest available line.

After a BT or Timefall section

  1. Move beyond the immediate hazard before stopping.
  2. Inspect every container for condition loss.
  3. Use Container Repair Spray when needed.
  4. Check stamina and hydration before the next climb or crossing.
  5. Rearrange the load if a fall or scramble changed its balance.

Hematic grenades provide a later combat option, but they consume Sam’s blood. Carry Blood Bags when you expect repeated encounters so you can support continued use without exhausting your reserves. Avoid treating grenades as a replacement for stealth on every early delivery; slow movement and a clear exit route conserve resources.

Staying safe around MULE camps

MULE sensor poles reveal cargo locations. If a scan catches you, leave the detection area quickly, break line of sight, or hide in tall grass. Watchtowers help locate camps and reveal the surrounding layout before you commit to a crossing. The Bola Gun can bind an immediate threat and create space to escape.

When to avoid a camp

Do not raid a camp simply because it is nearby. If the order is time-sensitive or the cargo is fragile, route around the perimeter and preserve the delivery. A detour is usually cheaper than a fight that causes falls, container damage, or a lost shipment.

If you are collecting supplies

When the goal is to recover materials, leave delivery cargo behind so you have room for what you find. Use a postbox or share locker to store the shipment, then return with enough capacity to collect both the order and supplies. This separates the delivery objective from the optional raid and prevents a successful recovery from making the original order unsafe.

Build structures that pay off on your routes

Construction is most effective when it solves a repeated problem. Before spending materials, ask whether the obstacle appears on several orders, whether the structure shortens a dangerous crossing, and whether another porter’s structure already covers the same need.

Structure or tool Best use Main limitation
Ladder Short cliffs, ledges, and awkward vertical sections Fixed to one location and unsuitable for broad gaps
Climbing anchor Controlled movement across steep faces and rocky drops Requires a suitable line and placement
Bridge Repeated crossings over rivers, ravines, or broken ground Needs materials and available Chiral bandwidth
Road Fast, safer vehicle travel on recurring delivery corridors Large material and bandwidth investment
Generator Recharging vehicles and battery-powered equipment Equipment must remain within its charging radius
Zipline Fast mountain travel once several connected stations exist Isolated segments have little value; network range and bandwidth matter
Postbox or share locker Storing cargo and supplies for a later, better-equipped trip Requires a return trip or retrieval plan

Like useful structures and contribute materials when you can. Shared infrastructure can help other players, while their ladders, bridges, roads, paths, postboxes, and vehicles can reduce your own workload. Build where the route is genuinely difficult rather than placing structures randomly; a well-positioned aid is more likely to be used.

Route choices: which trade-off is right?

Choice Advantage Risk or cost Use it when
Short, steep route Less distance and potentially faster on foot Higher fall, stamina, and cargo-damage risk The slope is manageable, the load is light, and no safer detour exists
Long, gentle route Better balance and cargo safety More time and stamina spent walking The order is fragile, the load is heavy, or the steep route lacks structures
Walking No battery dependency and precise control Slower with large loads Terrain is rough, water is deep, or the vehicle route is uncertain
Reverse Trike Fast transport for larger loads on suitable ground Battery drain, water hazards, and reduced control on rough terrain Roads or firm paths connect the destination and a charging point
Solo equipment Works even outside network coverage You carry every tool and material yourself The route is new or online structures are sparse
Shared structures Reduces construction and travel effort Placement, condition, coverage, and battery support may not fit your route Existing infrastructure matches your waypoints
Early stealth Preserves blood, ammunition, and cargo condition Requires patience and route awareness You are learning a BT or MULE area
Later combat tools Provides options when avoidance is impractical Consumes resources such as blood You have the equipment and supplies for a planned confrontation

A practical pre-departure checklist

  • Order destination, conditions, and time requirement reviewed.
  • Map tilted and several waypoints marked.
  • Gentler route compared with the shortest route.
  • Distribution centers or other rest points identified.
  • Load indicator white whenever possible.
  • Special package orientation confirmed.
  • Auto-Arrange Cargo used, then checked manually.
  • Ladder or climbing anchor packed for likely cliffs.
  • Container Repair Spray packed if Timefall is possible.
  • Floater, power skeleton, or vehicle selected for the load.
  • Vehicle battery and generator locations checked.
  • BT and MULE areas identified, with an exit route planned.

Which Death Stranding version should a beginner buy?

On PS5, Kojima Productions describes DEATH STRANDING DIRECTOR’S CUT as the definitive experience. It includes additional missions, facilities, weapons, vehicles, and other enhancements. If you are starting on PS5, search for the exact edition name “Death Stranding Director’s Cut PS5”, then verify the seller, stock, current price, region, and whether the listing is for the edition you intend to purchase. Those commercial details can change, so the product page should be checked at the time of purchase.

The edition choice does not change the fundamentals of good delivery play: terrain assessment, balanced cargo, container maintenance, measured movement, and sensible infrastructure remain the skills that prevent most beginner failures.

What success looks like on a difficult delivery

A strong delivery plan is not simply the fastest line. It is a sequence of manageable decisions: a route that avoids unnecessary gradients, a load that stays within the white range, equipment for the specific obstacles ahead, a charging or rest point before resources run low, and a fallback when a river, BT zone, or MULE scan makes the original line unsafe. Scan often, steady Sam when the ground turns difficult, and repair containers before minor damage becomes a poor delivery rating.
