Death and Taxes vs. Papers, Please: Which Choice-Driven Work Sim Should You Play?

Choose Papers, Please if you want tense document inspection, strict rules and the pressure of running a fictional border checkpoint. Choose Death and Taxes if you prefer a darkly comic office job in which you play the Grim Reaper, speak with voiced characters and decide who lives or dies. Both are single-player games built around consequential choices and multiple endings, but the work you perform, the way the moral pressure is presented and the visual tone are fundamentally different.

The short answer

Papers, Please is the more mechanical choice. Each workday asks you to inspect passports and permits, compare details against changing rules and decide whether a traveler may enter the fictional country of Arstotzka. Mistakes can cost you money, threaten your household and expose you to political danger.

Death and Taxes is the more overtly narrative choice. You are a newly employed Grim Reaper in an office, sorting people into life-and-death outcomes while dealing with a boss, co-workers and a mystery surrounding your own incarnation. Dialogue, relationships and branching story events sit alongside the daily assignment task.

Neither is a universal winner. The right pick depends on whether you want bureaucratic scrutiny or supernatural fate management, pixel-art dystopia or watercolor workplace comedy, and rule memorization or character-driven branching.

How the two jobs actually play

Papers, Please: investigate before you decide

In Papers, Please, the player is an immigration inspector at the Grestin Border Checkpoint after Arstotzka’s six-year war with neighboring Kolechia. Travelers approach your booth, present documents and wait while you verify their identity and eligibility.

The job is performed through inspection. You read passports, entry permits and other papers, then use the Ministry’s inspection systems to compare names, photographs, dates and required approvals. Rules change as the political situation develops, so a procedure that was correct yesterday may be incomplete today. The game turns small discrepancies into decisions with immediate consequences: admit the traveler, deny entry or escalate the case for arrest.

That structure makes attention the main resource. You are not simply choosing between abstract moral options; you are deciding whether the evidence in front of you satisfies the current rule set. A sympathetic person can have invalid papers, while a dangerous person can arrive with convincing documentation. The tension comes from having to apply a system even when the human story behind the paperwork is uncomfortable.

Death and Taxes: assign outcomes, then live with the office politics

Death and Taxes casts you as the Grim Reaper on an office job. Instead of checking whether someone has the correct permit, you decide which people should live and which should die. The store description presents these decisions as choices that affect the wider world, while your workplace relationships and conversations give the task a personal context.

The workday is connected to a broader narrative. You interact with fully voiced non-player characters, select dialogue options, customize your Grim Reaper and visit an upgrade shop. The boss relationship and the mystery of your character’s incarnation are part of the game’s story frame, so the decision desk is not an isolated puzzle screen.

The supernatural premise also changes how consequences feel. In Papers, Please, a refusal can separate a family or protect a border. In Death and Taxes, the decision is expressed directly as a judgment over life and death, then interpreted through a darkly comic office environment. The game asks you to consider the effect of your assignments while also navigating the expectations of your employer.

Which game has the stronger moral pressure?

Rules, evidence and institutional pressure in Papers, Please

The pressure in Papers, Please comes from being an employee of a fictional state. Your authority is narrow but consequential: you control access to the checkpoint, and your performance is measured against official instructions. The game places personal compassion inside an institutional process. Helping one traveler may conflict with the rule of the day; following the rule may produce a result you find cruel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting is fictional rather than a simulation of a real country or a neutral model of real-world immigration. Arstotzka, Kolechia and the border checkpoint are invented, but the game uses recognizable themes of bureaucracy, smuggling, crime, family separation and political control. Its mature-content note identifies brief pixel-art violence and nudity alongside those narrative themes.

Life-and-death judgments and relationships in Death and Taxes

Death and Taxes makes the moral question more explicit: every assignment concerns whether a person continues living. The office setting creates distance through absurdity and dark humor, while the characters and dialogue keep the consequences personal. Your relationship with the boss and the unfolding incarnation mystery add pressures that are different from a border inspector’s chain of command.

The developer’s mature-content note mentions death and written references to suicide. Players who prefer to avoid those subjects should treat that warning as relevant even though the presentation is stylized and comedic.

The official descriptions support saying that both games offer consequential decisions and multiple endings. They do not establish that one game has objectively more meaningful choices, so that judgment is best left to your preferred kind of pressure.

Story, branching and endings

What the store descriptions establish

Both games advertise multiple endings, but they organize their stories differently. Papers, Please emphasizes the inspection job, the fictional political setting and the sequence of border-control decisions. Your workdays are the main lens through which the story develops.

Death and Taxes explicitly advertises a branching storyline with multiple secret endings. It also lists dialogue options, voiced NPCs and character customization, making conversations and relationships visible parts of the narrative structure.

That difference matters if you are choosing based on story format. Players who want a workplace routine embedded in a political thriller may prefer Papers, Please. Players who want a character-centered office narrative with conversations and route variation may prefer Death and Taxes. The available descriptions do not provide a verified number of endings or a reliable playtime for either title, so those figures should not be used to choose between them.

How to think about replaying them

Because both games have multiple endings, a first run is not the only possible outcome. In Papers, Please, replay interest is naturally tied to how you respond to changing instructions and the people who pass through the checkpoint. In Death and Taxes, the advertised branching structure and dialogue options suggest that different decisions can lead the story in different directions. Exact replay length, ending count and comparative difficulty are not established by the official listings and vary with how thoroughly you explore.

Tone, art and audio

The stark pixel-art checkpoint

Papers, Please uses pixel graphics and a dystopian presentation. The limited visual style reinforces the booth, the forms and the repetitive rhythm of inspection. Faces, stamps and document details carry more weight because the game keeps the setting visually spare.

Steam lists 15 supported interface languages. Its language table does not list a full-audio language option, so players should expect the experience to rely on text and sound design rather than voiced dialogue.

The watercolor afterlife office

Death and Taxes advertises watercolor artwork, an original soundtrack and fully voiced NPCs. The combination gives its office setting a more illustrated and character-forward identity than the checkpoint in Papers, Please. Dialogue options and a customizable Grim Reaper further emphasize personality and presentation.

Release history and ownership context

Papers, Please was released on August 8, 2013. Steam identifies Lucas Pope as developer and 3909 as publisher.

Death and Taxes was released on February 20, 2020. Steam identifies Placeholder Gameworks and Hawthorn Games as publishers, while the developer’s page reports more than 700,000 PC copies sold as of the page accessed in 2026. That sales number is a developer-reported cumulative figure, not an independently audited total, and the page does not state when the figure itself was published.

Store review summaries are live and volatile. At the time of the referenced page access, Papers, Please showed an “Overwhelmingly Positive” English summary and Death and Taxes showed a “Very Positive” English summary. Treat those labels as snapshots rather than permanent quality measurements; counts and percentages can change.

Choose based on the kind of decisions you enjoy

Pick Papers, Please when you want:

  • A clearly defined inspection loop built around documents, discrepancies and changing rules.
  • A fictional postwar border setting with political, criminal and family-related consequences.
  • Pixel-art presentation and a mostly text-driven experience.
  • The feeling of balancing official procedure against individual human situations.
  • A game whose central challenge is careful observation and consistent application of instructions.

Pick Death and Taxes when you want:

  • A supernatural office job in which each assignment concerns life and death.
  • Dark comedy, watercolor artwork and a more character-focused atmosphere.
  • Fully voiced NPCs, dialogue options and a relationship with your boss.
  • A branching storyline with multiple secret endings advertised by the store listing.
  • Character customization, an upgrade shop, an original soundtrack and Twitch integration.

Consider both if you want:

  • A single-player work simulation where routine tasks gradually reveal a larger story.
  • Choices that affect outcomes rather than a purely linear campaign.
  • A stylized setting instead of a realistic simulation of an actual government or workplace.

Important content notes

Papers, Please contains brief pixel-art violence and nudity. Its narrative themes include crime, smuggling, immigration and border control. The checkpoint setting is fictional, but those subjects can still be intense for players who are sensitive to political or humanitarian themes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Death and Taxes centers on death and includes written mentions of suicide according to its mature-content note. Its darkly comic tone does not remove those subjects from the story.

Buying and availability checks

Prices, regional listings, review totals and platform compatibility are volatile. Before buying either game, open the current official store page for your platform and confirm the edition, operating-system support, language options, controller behavior and local price. For Death and Taxes, also check whether the Switch or Switch 2 listing is available in your region. For Papers, Please, confirm that the listed macOS, Linux or Windows requirements match the machine you intend to use.

The official listings describe digital games. A downloadable soundtrack is listed for Death and Taxes, and its official site offers a free coloring-book download, but no specific physical game edition, soundtrack disc, printed coloring book or other named physical item is established here. Do not assume that a merchandise link represents current inventory or an affiliate offer.

Final recommendation

Start with Papers, Please if the appeal is the work itself: examining documents, spotting contradictions and enforcing rules while knowing that every decision has a human cost. Start with Death and Taxes if you want the workday to be a stage for character interactions, voiced dialogue and a branching supernatural story about assigning mortality.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The games share a choice-driven work-sim foundation, but they satisfy different moods. Papers, Please is the focused border-inspection experience; Death and Taxes is the more openly narrative Grim Reaper office drama. Choose the setting and decision style you are most likely to enjoy, then verify the current platform listing before purchasing.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
