Yucatán health authorities have restricted access to four additional artificial-lake sites in Mérida after laboratory testing reportedly detected Naegleria fowleri, the free-living amoeba that can cause the usually fatal brain infection primary amebic meningoencephalitis (PAM). The findings were reported by Yucatán Magazine; a publicly posted laboratory report, organism concentration, and completion date for cleanup were not available.
Which Mérida water features were affected?
The inspection covered nine urban water features. Authorities reported positive findings at the following locations:

The other inspected water features tested negative in that round. A negative result is not a permanent safety certificate: the CDC says the amoeba’s location and concentration can change, and there is no standardized test that establishes how much Naegleria is present in a water body.
Why authorities acted
The citywide inspection followed the death of a water-sports instructor who taught activities, mainly wakeboarding, in the Plaza La Isla lake. Health officials monitored hundreds of potentially exposed people. In the account, observation periods ended without reported symptoms and no additional human cases were identified.

Finding the amoeba in a lake does not mean that everyone nearby is infected or will become ill. PAM occurs when contaminated water enters the nose and the organism travels to the brain. Ordinary visits to a park, zoo, or shopping area without water contact do not create that exposure route.
What Naegleria fowleri is—and how infection happens
The CDC describes Naegleria fowleri as a one-celled organism that thrives in warm freshwater lakes, rivers, and hot springs. Infection is associated with water forced up the nose during activities such as diving, jumping, swimming, or water sports. Drinking contaminated water does not cause PAM, and the infection is not spread by casual contact or from one person to another.

Early symptoms can include headache, fever, nausea, and vomiting. The illness can progress rapidly, so anyone who develops concerning symptoms after a recent warm-freshwater exposure should seek urgent medical care and disclose that exposure.
The disease is exceptionally rare but almost always fatal. CDC figures published in different annual updates use different reporting cutoffs: one 2025 summary lists 167 U.S. PAM cases from 1962 through 2024, with four survivors; a 2026 summary lists 180 cases diagnosed from 1937 through 2025. In the latter table, 157 cases had a known month of onset, including 60 beginning in July and 56 in August. These U.S. counts are not a Mérida-specific infection rate.

Can you still visit La Plancha or El Centenario Zoo?
The surrounding facilities remained open because the affected lakes are ornamental and are not approved for swimming or bathing. Visitors can generally enter the parks or zoo while following posted instructions, but must not cross barriers, touch the restricted water, or allow children and pets to play in it.
At Animaya, boat tours could continue because riders did not directly contact the water. That decision does not apply automatically to every facility: follow the current closure order and on-site signs for each location.

How to reduce risk in warm freshwater
- Obey closures. Do not enter a cordoned lake or resume activities until local officials announce that restrictions have ended.
- Keep water out of your nose. For permitted warm-freshwater recreation, hold your nose shut or use a nose clip when jumping or diving. A nose clip reduces one route of entry but cannot make exposure risk zero.
- Avoid forceful nasal exposure. Do not jump, dive, or undertake water sports in a restricted or untreated lake.
- Use safe water for sinus rinsing. The CDC advises store-bought water labeled “distilled” or “sterile,” or tap water that has been boiled and cooled. Untreated tap water should not be used in a neti pot or other nasal-rinsing device.
What a negative test does—and does not—tell you
Environmental sampling is a snapshot. A negative sample means the organism was not detected in that particular test, not that every part of the lake is free of it or that conditions cannot change. Because no standardized method measures abundance reliably across water bodies, consumers cannot certify a lake’s safety with a home test. The practical safeguard is to respect local restrictions and avoid putting warm freshwater up the nose.
