Deadlock and Dota 2 share Valve ownership and multiplayer-combat DNA, but they are not the same game viewed from different camera angles. Deadlock is an unfinished, invite-limited experiment that combines third-person shooting with MOBA conventions. Dota 2 is the released, free-to-play strategy MOBA Valve launched on 9 July 2013, with more than 100 heroes, flexible roles and a mature item system.
Choose Deadlock if you want to try an evolving shooter-MOBA hybrid and accept changing systems, temporary art and restricted access. Choose Dota 2 if you want a game you can download now, documented rules, established competitive play and a broad hero-and-item ecosystem.

The short answer: Deadlock is an experiment; Dota 2 is an established strategy game
The clearest distinction is the kind of decision each game asks you to make every second. Deadlock is officially tagged as a MOBA, Third-Person Shooter and Hero Shooter. That combination points to a game in which your view, movement and aim are part of combat in a direct, character-level way. Dota 2 is tagged as a MOBA, Strategy, eSports and Difficult; its store description emphasizes choosing from more than a hundred heroes, combining abilities and items, and filling different team roles.

Valve describes Deadlock as “a multiplayer game in early development.” Its Steam page says the release date is “To be announced,” the game is not yet available through the normal Steam catalog, and access is limited to friend invitations from playtesters. The same listing warns that the build contains temporary art and experimental gameplay. Dota 2, by contrast, is released and marked Free To Play.

In practical terms, Dota 2 is the dependable choice for immediate play and long-term mastery. Deadlock is the choice for players who specifically want to explore a changing third-person format before its final rules, content and hardware requirements are known.
Current status and access
Deadlock is not an ordinary Steam release
Deadlock’s current status affects every comparison. Valve’s listing does not give a launch date; it says “To be announced.” It also says the game is not currently available on Steam and that access is restricted to friend invites through people who are already playtesting. There is no general purchase or open download route described by Valve’s current listing.
An invitation is therefore a condition of entry, not a minor onboarding step. Even after gaining access, you should expect unfinished presentation and rules that may change. Temporary art means visual assets are not necessarily representative of the eventual game. Experimental gameplay means that mechanics, balance, map structure or progression should not be treated as final specifications.
Dota 2 is available now
Valve lists Dota 2’s release date as 9 July 2013 and marks it Free To Play. A new player can install the released game without waiting for an invitation. Its long public history also means that guides, terminology, hero explanations and strategic discussions are available in much greater depth than for an unreleased test build.
| Question | Deadlock | Dota 2 |

| Release date | To be announced | 9 July 2013 |

Is Deadlock basically Dota 2 in third person?
No. The comparison is useful because both games fit the broad MOBA category, but “Dota 2 in third person” understates the difference in player input and overstates how much of Deadlock’s final structure is known.
Dota 2 presents a battlefield from an overhead strategy perspective. You direct a hero, read the wider map, coordinate with teammates, use abilities and purchase items. The camera makes information management and positioning across the battlefield central to play. Deadlock’s official tags instead identify a third-person shooter and hero shooter alongside the MOBA label. That makes aiming and the character’s immediate movement part of the core interaction rather than merely a way to issue strategic commands.
The shared label tells you that both games are team-based competitive player-versus-player experiences built around distinct heroes and objective-oriented combat. It does not establish that they use the same map, lane arrangement, match timing, progression, economy, item catalog or role definitions. Valve has not published a final Deadlock ruleset, so those details should not be presented as settled equivalents to Dota 2 systems.

Perspective and moment-to-moment control
Deadlock: direct character control and aiming
Deadlock’s third-person-shooter and hero-shooter tags indicate a closer relationship between your physical input and what your hero does on screen. Your viewpoint follows the character from behind rather than looking down on the whole battlefield. In a shooter-oriented format, crosshair placement, target selection and the timing of direct attacks naturally become important skills.
That does not mean every current movement technique or weapon rule is permanent. Because Valve describes the game as experimental, it is safer to treat the perspective and shooter emphasis as the reliable distinction, while avoiding claims about specific traversal systems, recoil behavior or ability interactions unless Valve later documents them as final.
Dota 2: strategic control from an overhead view
Dota 2’s strategy-MOBA presentation places more emphasis on seeing and interpreting the larger battle space. You select a hero, combine abilities with items and make decisions that affect your team’s role in the match. The game’s official description also stresses that players can fill multiple roles, so success is not limited to defeating an opponent in a direct duel.
The practical contrast is not “action versus strategy.” Both games require strategy. It is where the strategy is expressed: Deadlock foregrounds direct third-person interaction, while Dota 2 foregrounds battlefield planning, hero capabilities, items and team roles through an overhead strategy interface.
| Control question | Deadlock | Dota 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Official perspective signal | Third-Person Shooter and Hero Shooter tags | Strategy-focused MOBA presentation |
| Immediate emphasis | Direct character movement and shooter-style aiming | Hero control, map awareness, abilities, items and positioning |
| What is firmly documented | The shooter-MOBA blend and competitive team format | More than 100 heroes, flexible roles and item combinations |
| What should not be assumed | A final movement, economy or objective system | That shooter-style aiming is part of the core control model |
Heroes, roles and strategic structure
What Dota 2 documents
Valve’s store description says that every day millions of players enter battle as one of over a hundred Dota heroes. It also states that heroes can combine abilities and items and fill multiple roles. This gives Dota 2 a large, documented decision space before a match even begins:
- Hero choice: select from a roster of more than 100 distinct heroes.
- Role choice: contribute to the team in different ways rather than following one mandatory job.
- Ability choice: use each hero’s distinctive set of powers at appropriate moments.
- Item choice: adapt a build by combining purchasable items with the hero’s abilities.
- Team composition: balance complementary strengths, weaknesses and timing windows.
“All heroes are free” is part of Valve’s description, so access to the roster is not gated by purchasing individual characters. That matters for learning: a player can explore the hero pool without paying for each new option.
What remains unsettled in Deadlock
Deadlock’s official listing confirms the intended mixture of MOBA, third-person shooter and hero-shooter elements, but it does not promise a finalized equivalent to Dota 2’s hero count, item catalog or role taxonomy. Current test content can demonstrate the direction of the design without proving what will ship.

For a prospective player, the right expectation is an evolving shooter-MOBA experiment. You may encounter recognizable team and hero concepts, but you should not assume that every Dota 2 convention transfers directly or that an apparent Deadlock role will retain the same name and function after development.

Which game is harder?
There is no reliable final ranking yet. Dota 2 is officially tagged “Difficult,” and its documented roster, item system and flexible roles create a substantial learning burden. A newcomer must learn hero abilities, item interactions, team responsibilities, map information and the consequences of strategic decisions.
Deadlock may feel more approachable to someone who already understands third-person shooters. Direct aiming can be more familiar than learning an overhead MOBA’s many interactions. However, familiarity with shooting does not remove the need to learn a team-based objective game, and Deadlock’s unfinished systems make its eventual learning curve impossible to state with confidence.
Why Dota 2 has a known high learning cost
- Roster breadth: more than 100 heroes mean many abilities and matchups to recognize.
- Item interactions: builds change how a hero performs and require situational decisions.
- Role flexibility: the same team must coordinate different contributions rather than simply mirror opponents.
- Competitive depth: a released game supports established terminology, strategy and counterplay that newcomers must absorb.
Why Deadlock’s difficulty is still provisional
Deadlock’s direct-control emphasis could reduce the initial barrier for players coming from shooter games, but that is an informed expectation rather than a measured result. The build is explicitly experimental. Its final roster, economy, objectives and progression have not been established in the current official information, so any claim that it is definitively easier or harder than Dota 2 would go beyond the evidence.
Hero shooter versus MOBA: what the labels mean here
A hero shooter normally centers on direct control of a character with a distinct weapon or ability kit, where aiming and real-time positioning are prominent. A MOBA normally organizes a team battle around heroes, shared objectives, strategic positioning and progression during a match. The categories overlap: a game can use shooter-style control while retaining team roles, hero abilities and objective-based strategy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDeadlock’s tags place it in that overlap. The third-person and hero-shooter labels describe the viewpoint and direct combat flavor; the MOBA and team-based labels describe the broader competitive structure. Dota 2 occupies the strategy-MOBA side of the same broad family. Calling Deadlock a hybrid is therefore more accurate than calling it a shooter with a few Dota-like features or a complete third-person remake of Dota 2.
Availability, change and long-term commitment
Pick Dota 2 when certainty matters
Dota 2 is the practical choice if you need a game that can be installed and played immediately. Its release date, free-to-play status, hero roster and item-centered structure are documented. You can plan your learning around a stable public game rather than an invitation pipeline.

Pick Deadlock when experimentation is the point
Deadlock is appropriate for players who enjoy seeing a multiplayer game develop and can tolerate resets, balance changes, temporary visuals and incomplete documentation. Access itself may be unavailable to you, because Valve currently limits it to playtester invitations. The absence of a release date also means you cannot schedule a conventional launch purchase or assume that current test access will continue unchanged.
Do not treat an early Deadlock session as a definitive review of the finished product. A mechanic that feels essential today may be redesigned, and a temporary asset may disappear. The most durable conclusion is the game’s intended direction: a competitive, team-based shooter-MOBA.
PC requirements: Dota 2 is specified; Deadlock is not
Dota 2’s published minimum information
Valve publishes minimum requirements for Dota 2 on Windows, macOS and Linux. The listing specifies at least 4 GB of RAM and 60 GB of available storage. Those figures are minimum listed requirements, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or competitive experience.
Deadlock’s requirements are not yet specified
Deadlock’s current Steam information lists its operating-system and processor requirements as not yet specified. That means there is no reliable published baseline from Valve’s current official listing against which to judge a particular PC. You should not infer Deadlock’s performance from Dota 2’s requirements or claim that a machine meeting Dota 2’s minimum will run Deadlock.
| Hardware question | Deadlock | Dota 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Operating-system requirement | Not yet specified in the current listing | Requirements published for Windows, macOS and Linux |
| Processor requirement | Not yet specified in the current listing | Concrete minimum specifications are published, but the listing does not state the processor model |
| Minimum memory | Not stated | 4 GB RAM |
| Minimum storage | Not stated | 60 GB |
| Performance certainty | Cannot be established from the current requirements | Minimum requirements are available, but they do not promise a particular frame rate |
How to use the requirements responsibly
- For Dota 2, compare your operating system, memory and free storage with Valve’s published minimum listing, then leave additional headroom for the operating system and updates.
- For Deadlock, do not make a pass/fail judgment from the current page. Wait for Valve to publish requirements that identify the supported operating systems, processor, memory, graphics hardware and storage.
- For either game, distinguish “meets minimum” from “delivers the settings and responsiveness you want.” Minimum specifications are compatibility guidance, not a performance test.
How the choice changes for different players
If you already play Dota 2
Deadlock may be interesting because it transfers some familiar ideas—heroes, team competition and a MOBA-like strategic frame—into direct third-person control. Your understanding of coordinating abilities and thinking about roles can help, but it will not replace learning shooter-style aiming and the specific rules of a new game.
Keep your expectations flexible. Dota 2’s more than 100 heroes and item combinations are documented features of that released game; they are not a promise that Deadlock will reproduce the same scale or progression.
If you come from shooters
Deadlock’s official third-person-shooter and hero-shooter tags make it the more immediately recognizable starting point. You may be comfortable with direct aim and character movement, but you still need to learn team objectives, hero abilities and whatever strategic economy the developing game uses.
Best Value
Dota 2 can be rewarding if you are willing to trade shooter familiarity for a strategy-heavy learning process. Its difficulty tag is a useful warning that basic controls are only the beginning.
If you need a game for a group tonight
Dota 2 is the only reliable recommendation between the two based on the current listings. It is released and free to play. Deadlock’s invitation-only access means some members of a group may be unable to enter, and its availability can change while development continues.
If you are evaluating a PC purchase
Dota 2 offers concrete minimum figures, including 4 GB of RAM and 60 GB of storage. Deadlock does not yet provide enough published information to justify buying or upgrading hardware specifically for it. A responsible purchase decision should wait for Valve’s final or at least explicit test requirements.

What the current evidence does—and does not—show
The current official descriptions support several firm conclusions:
- Deadlock is an early-development multiplayer game, not a finished release.
- Deadlock combines official MOBA, third-person-shooter and hero-shooter labels.
- Deadlock access is currently limited to friend invitations through playtesters, with no announced release date.
- Dota 2 is a free-to-play release from 9 July 2013.
- Dota 2 offers more than 100 heroes, flexible roles, ability combinations and items, with all heroes free.
- Dota 2 publishes minimum PC information, while Deadlock’s operating-system and processor entries are not yet specified.
The same information does not establish a directly comparable player count, esports audience, match length, frame-rate target, final Deadlock roster, final item system or definitive winner on difficulty. Those are precisely the areas where a confident-sounding comparison would mislead readers. Until Valve publishes more, describe Deadlock by its confirmed direction and access status rather than by assumptions borrowed from Dota 2 or from other shooters.
Which Valve game should you choose?
| Your priority | Better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Play immediately without an invitation | Dota 2 | It is released and free to play. |
| Third-person, shooter-oriented control | Deadlock | Valve officially tags it as a third-person shooter and hero shooter, subject to development changes. |
| A large, documented hero and item ecosystem | Dota 2 | Valve describes more than 100 heroes, flexible roles and item combinations. |
| Stable hardware guidance | Dota 2 | Minimum requirements include 4 GB RAM and 60 GB storage, with support information for Windows, macOS and Linux. |
| Trying an unfinished game in development | Deadlock | Its current build is explicitly experimental and includes temporary art. |
| A mature competitive learning target | Dota 2 | It is the established released game rather than an invite-limited test. |
Verdict
Deadlock and Dota 2 are related by genre ideas, not interchangeable experiences. Dota 2 is Valve’s established, strategy-first MOBA: free to play, released in 2013, supported by more than 100 free heroes, flexible roles and item-driven decisions. Deadlock is Valve’s unfinished attempt to combine MOBA structure with third-person and hero-shooter control, available only to invited playtesters and without an announced release date.
For a game you can choose, install and learn with predictable expectations, choose Dota 2. For a chance to explore Valve’s evolving shooter-MOBA direction—and to accept that access, art and mechanics may change—Deadlock is the relevant option.
