Deadlock invite FAQ: How access, friend invites, limits, and Steam accounts work in 2026

Deadlock is not publicly available on Steam. As of October 18, 2026, Valve says access is limited to friend invites sent by existing playtesters. The legitimate path is to become Steam friends with someone who already has playtest access, receive an invitation through Steam, accept it on the invited account, and install only from Steam. Valve has not published a Deadlock-specific invite quota, minimum Steam spending requirement, account-age rule, region rule, or guaranteed playtest duration.

What Deadlock access looks like right now

Deadlock remains an early-development game rather than a released Steam title. Valve’s listing describes it as being in “early development stages with lots of temporary art and experimental gameplay.” The same listing says, “Access to Deadlock is currently limited to friend invites via our playtesters.” Its release date is shown as To be announced, and the game is not yet available for anyone to install directly from the public Steam store page.

That wording establishes two important boundaries. First, an invitation is an access authorization, not a product key that can be bought from a marketplace. Second, access depends on an existing playtester using Steam’s friend-invite mechanism; signing up for a general public beta, purchasing a gift card, or downloading a file from another site does not substitute for that process.

How to get a legitimate Deadlock invite

The process has only one officially stated starting point: find an existing Deadlock playtester who is willing and able to invite you. The following sequence keeps your Steam identity and installation in the official channel.

  1. Identify a current playtester. The person must already have Deadlock playtest access. Being a Steam user, owning other Valve games, or having a large friend list does not by itself make someone an eligible inviter.
  2. Add each other on Steam. Send a Steam friend request from the account you intend to use for Deadlock. Accept the request on the playtester’s account so the friendship exists before the invitation is attempted.
  3. Ask the tester to use the in-game or Steam invite flow. Valve’s public listing confirms the friend-invite rule but does not document every screen or notification. A community guide describes the practical delivery workflow; treat its interface details as guidance that can change rather than as Valve policy.
  4. Monitor the invited account. Check Steam notifications and the account’s playtest-invite area while signed in to the same account that was invited. Do not assume an email, chat message, or screenshot is proof that the account itself has been granted access.
  5. Accept the invitation on Steam. Complete the acceptance action in Steam. If the invitation is genuine, the entitlement is attached to that Steam account, not to a transferable code supplied by another person.
  6. Install through Steam only. After acceptance, use Steam’s own library or playtest page to download the client. Do not run an installer, executable, or “early access” package sent through a chat, file-sharing service, or an invite-selling site.

If you cannot find a tester, there is no official public purchase or open-registration route identified on Valve’s listing. Waiting for Valve to change the access policy is safer than paying someone who claims to have spare invitations.

Can a friend invite you?

Yes, provided the friend already has Deadlock playtest access and the invitation feature is available to that tester’s account. The official notice specifically describes access as friend invites “via our playtesters.” A friend who has never been admitted to the playtest cannot create an official invitation simply because both of you use Steam.

The invite is tied to the recipient’s Steam account. Make sure the tester invites the exact account you plan to use, especially if you have multiple Steam logins. Switching accounts after acceptance can make it appear that the invitation disappeared when it is actually attached to a different identity.

Valve’s public store listing does not state that friends must live in the same country, be friends for a particular number of days, own a particular game, or meet a spending threshold. Do not treat those conditions as requirements unless Valve publishes them for Deadlock.

How many people can a Deadlock tester invite?

Valve has not published a Deadlock-specific number on the official listing. Steamworks documentation for the generic Steam Playtest system gives developers controls that can allow 1, 2, or 3 invitations per player, pause new friend invitations, and limit invitations to players who joined by a chosen date. Those are platform capabilities, not confirmation that Deadlock currently uses any particular setting.

Information What is established How to interpret it
Deadlock’s published quota Valve’s listing does not state one There is no verified Deadlock cap to rely on
Generic Steam Playtest controls Developers can configure 1, 2, or 3 invites per player These options describe Steam’s tools, not Deadlock’s active quota
Pausing invitations Steamworks allows a developer to pause new friend invites An eligible tester may still be unable to send an invite while invitations are paused
Date-based restriction Steamworks allows restrictions based on when a player joined A tester’s eligibility can depend on developer settings that are not shown on the public listing

Consequently, one tester may be able to invite a particular number of friends at one time while another cannot send any. A failed or missing invite does not prove that your account is disqualified; the tester may have exhausted an allowance or encountered a paused feature.

Do you need to spend money on Steam?

No minimum purchase amount is published for Deadlock access on Valve’s cited listing. The listing also does not publish an account-age requirement, a regional restriction, or another spending threshold. Therefore, claims such as “buy a game first,” “add a specific amount to your wallet,” or “use a gift card to unlock the playtest” are not official Deadlock requirements in the available documentation.

Some community discussions claim that limited Steam accounts cannot send or receive certain invitations. That claim is not confirmed by Valve in the listing cited for Deadlock. If you encounter such a problem, verify the invitation status and Steam account involved before spending money. Purchasing unrelated software or hardware will not create a Deadlock entitlement.

Where to accept an invitation

The invitation must be accepted by the Steam account that is supposed to play. Valve’s public page confirms the friend-invite model but does not provide a permanent, Deadlock-specific menu path, and Steam’s interface can change. In practice, look for the pending playtest invitation in Steam’s notifications and in the account’s playtest-related area, then follow the acceptance prompt presented there.

  • Remain signed in to the intended Steam account on the desktop client or browser.
  • Check notifications as well as the playtest section; an invitation can be visible in one place before another refreshes.
  • Confirm that the page identifies Deadlock and that acceptance applies to your account.
  • After accepting, open your Steam library and use the official install control rather than a third-party download.

If no invitation appears, ask the tester to confirm that the Steam friendship is mutual and that they used the official invite control. Restarting Steam or signing out and back in can refresh account data, but it cannot create an invitation that was never issued.

Official and unofficial ways to seek access

Route Existing playtester required? Steam account identity Valve support Risk
Friend invite through Steam Yes Invitation is attached to the invited account Matches Valve’s published access notice Lowest when accepted and installed inside Steam
Invite offered by a stranger for payment Claimed, but not verifiable from the offer alone May involve an account transfer or dishonest request Not identified as an official sales channel High risk of fraud, malware, or account loss
Purchased Steam gift card or unrelated game No Does not grant Deadlock entitlement Not stated as an access requirement Money spent without solving access
Downloaded client or code from a third-party site No verified Steam invitation May bypass or misrepresent Steam identity Not the official installation path High risk of malware and stolen credentials

Never give a stranger your Steam password, mobile authenticator code, recovery code, or remote-control access in exchange for an invitation. A legitimate friend invitation does not require you to surrender account control.

Troubleshooting a missing or failed invite

The tester cannot find an invite button

First confirm that the tester actually has Deadlock playtest access. If they do, the feature may be paused, the tester may have used the available invitations, or developer settings may restrict who can be invited. Steamworks documentation confirms that these controls exist in the general playtest system, but it does not reveal Deadlock’s current values.

You are friends, but nothing arrives

Check that both accounts accepted the friendship and that the tester invited the correct Steam account. Review Steam notifications and the playtest-invite area rather than relying on a chat message. Ask the tester to retry through Steam’s official flow; do not accept a replacement “code” sent elsewhere.

An invitation appears, but installation is unavailable

Sign in to the account that accepted the invite and refresh Steam. If the entitlement still does not appear, record the account identity and invitation status before contacting Steam Support. Do not download an unofficial client while waiting; a separate installer cannot repair a missing Steam entitlement.

Someone asks for payment

Stop the transaction. Valve’s listing describes access through friend invites, not a paid resale market. Report suspicious listings to the platform where they appear, block the seller, and change your Steam password if you entered credentials on a questionable page.

Is Deadlock free yet?

Deadlock is not “free to play” in the normal released-game sense because it is not publicly available on Steam. It is a restricted playtest in early development. The official materials do not announce a retail price, a final monetization model, a public launch date, or a promise that current playtest access will remain permanently.

Playtest access should therefore be treated as temporary and conditional. Valve may change invitation settings, pause invitations, remove access, or move the game toward a later release without guaranteeing that today’s entitlement continues unchanged.

What is and is not known about account rules

The confirmed requirement is a Steam-mediated friend invitation from an existing playtester. The following items are not published as Deadlock requirements on the cited Valve listing:

  • A minimum amount of money spent on Steam
  • A minimum Steam account age
  • Ownership of a particular Valve game
  • A specific country or region eligibility rule
  • A guaranteed number of invitations for every tester
  • A fixed length for the playtest
  • Permanent access after one successful invitation

Keeping these distinctions clear prevents common scams. A community claim can describe one person’s experience, but it should not be presented as Valve policy unless Valve documents it.

Safety checklist before you accept anything

  • Use the Steam account you intend to keep for the playtest.
  • Verify that the inviter is a real friend and an existing Deadlock playtester.
  • Accept invitations inside Steam, not through an emailed attachment or external executable.
  • Never pay for an invitation, buy an account, or share authentication codes.
  • Ignore gift-card, hardware, and unrelated-game recommendations presented as access requirements.
  • Keep Steam Guard and a unique password enabled, particularly if you have visited a third-party offer page.

What to expect next

For now, the decisive signals are Valve’s Steam listing and the invitation status of your account. The listing still labels the release date “To be announced,” says the game is not available on Steam, and limits access to friend invites via playtesters. Until Valve publishes a broader signup process or release announcement, the safest plan is to wait for an invitation from an eligible tester and perform every acceptance and installation step within Steam.
