Deadlock FAQ: Heroes, Match Length, Progression, Ranked, and Playing With Friends (2026)

Deadlock is a free-to-play Valve game for Windows PC that combines a third-person shooter with MOBA systems. You shoot, use abilities and melee attacks, push lanes with troopers, collect souls, buy items, and destroy the opposing base. As of October 2026 it is still an unfinished, invite-only game rather than a publicly released product, so its roster, progression, modes, and eligibility rules can change.

This FAQ explains how access works, what a normal match is like, how souls and ability points affect power, which modes support groups, what Ranked currently requires, and how to choose a first hero without relying on a permanent tier list.

What is Deadlock?

Deadlock is a team-based hero shooter with a six-player team on each side in its standard format. Its third-person camera gives you direct shooting and movement, while MOBA-style systems add lanes, allied and enemy troopers, a shop, hero abilities, soul income, and a base-destruction objective. Winning is not simply a matter of having better aim: teams must manage waves, take safe fights, spend income efficiently, and coordinate pressure across the map.

The game is being developed by Valve and remains unfinished. Valve has said that progression and hero or hideout customization may be adjusted substantially in response to feedback before full release. Treat current systems as a working version, not a promise that every rule will remain unchanged.

How do you get Deadlock?

Current access method

Access is currently invite-only. A Steam friend who already has the game must invite you through Steam. There is no public sign-up process, and you cannot purchase access. Valve has not announced a release date, so a store listing, price, or open beta schedule should not be assumed.

Platform and controls

The current version is listed for Windows PC through Steam. There is no announced Mac or console version. Deadlock is designed around mouse and keyboard controls, although Steam Input controllers are supported. A mouse and keyboard are the safer choice if you want the most direct control over aiming, camera movement, ability targeting, and rapid item use. If your setup is uncomfortable, a gaming mouse for Deadlock is a sensible hardware category to consider, but no particular manufacturer is endorsed by Valve.

How many heroes are in Deadlock?

The cited roster count was 43 playable heroes on October 16, 2026. Nurse Harrow was scheduled to become the sixth City Never Sleeps hero on October 20. Because heroes and balance change frequently, that number is a dated snapshot rather than a permanent total. Check the current in-game roster and patch notes before relying on it.

How to choose a first hero

Instead of searching for a fixed “best hero,” compare the characteristics that determine how demanding a character feels for a new player:

  • Mechanical complexity: how many simultaneous actions, aim patterns, or movement tricks must you learn.
  • Range: whether the hero can contribute from safety or must enter close fights.
  • Mobility: how easily the hero can escape a bad engagement, rotate between lanes, or chase a weakened opponent.
  • Durability: how much punishment the hero can take before retreating.
  • Ability-control demands: whether abilities require precise timing, directional aiming, area placement, or target selection.
  • Forgiveness: how badly a missed shot, mistimed cooldown, or poor position is punished.

A forgiving first hero usually lets you survive small positioning errors and still contribute damage or utility. A highly mobile or control-heavy hero can be rewarding, but it may require more practice with camera movement, cooldown tracking, and map awareness. Try several heroes in Sandbox or bot matches before judging one from a single public game.

How long is a Deadlock match?

Standard

A standard Deadlock match is 6v6 and usually lasts 25 to 45 minutes. The length depends on how evenly the teams trade objectives, how efficiently they convert soul income into pressure, and whether one side can break the opponent’s defenses. Plan for a substantial session rather than a five-minute match.

Street Brawl

Street Brawl is a 4v4 mode played as a series of short rounds. It is generally much quicker than Standard and gives a smaller group a more contained format. Round-based play can also make it easier to practice fighting and cooldown use without committing to a full-length lane game.

Other available activities

The current mode list also includes Ranked, bot matches, Sandbox, Explore NYC, custom matches, and a tutorial. These activities serve different purposes:

Mode or activity Team format or access Best use
Standard 6v6; parties can queue without a stated party-size or skill-gap limit Normal team play, lane learning, and playing with friends
Street Brawl 4v4, short rounds Quicker games and repeated combat practice
Ranked Solo or duo queue Competitive progression after meeting current eligibility rules
Bot Match Standard or Street Brawl against easy, medium, or hard bots; solo or with friends Learning heroes, routes, aiming, and item timing
Sandbox Practice environment Testing abilities, movement, and purchases without match pressure
Custom match Up to 12 players Organized games, experiments, or private practice
Explore NYC and tutorial Non-standard activities Learning the setting, controls, and basic systems

How does Deadlock progression and the soul economy work?

Souls are both money and progression fuel

Souls are the central resource. You earn them through play, then use them to fund purchases and advance your hero. That dual role creates an important trade-off: a player can have a high net-worth number but still be vulnerable if the advantage has not been converted into an item or ability upgrade that helps the next fight.

Boons and milestones

Boons are progression milestones tied to earned souls. Depending on the milestone, a boon may grant statistics, ability points, or an unlock. Because milestones are connected to income, collecting souls safely affects both your immediate shop options and your longer-term hero development.

Ability points and unlocks

An ability point can unlock an ability, giving your hero another action, or upgrade an ability you already have. Unlocking expands what you can do; upgrading changes how an existing action works. Read the exact effect before spending, because a new tool may solve a current weakness while a numerical or functional upgrade may make your strongest pattern more reliable.

A practical spending loop

  1. Collect lane income safely. Take available souls without standing in unnecessary enemy fire. Missing one wave is often less damaging than losing the health needed to contest the next one.
  2. Evaluate your next fight. Ask whether you need damage, survivability, mobility, or a way to control an enemy’s approach.
  3. Return from trades with enough health and ammunition. A purchase has less value if you must immediately retreat or cannot safely take the following wave.
  4. Spend before the next important engagement. Turn income into an item or ability upgrade that improves the fight you are actually about to take.
  5. Reassess after the fight. If the purchase did not solve the problem, change your next choice rather than automatically repeating the same build.

This approach links farming to a concrete combat plan. The largest visible soul total is not automatically the winning choice; unspent or poorly matched income can leave a hero weaker than a player with slightly less income but a better-timed purchase.

Can you play Deadlock with friends?

Standard parties

Standard is the normal place to play with friends. The current FAQ does not state a party-size or skill-gap limit for Standard, so groups can queue together under the present rules. Because games are 6v6 and can last 25 to 45 minutes, agree on a realistic session length before starting.

Bot matches and custom games

Bot Match supports Standard or Street Brawl against easy, medium, or hard bots. You can play alone or bring friends, making it useful when someone is learning controls or testing a new hero. Custom matches support up to 12 players, enough for a complete two-team lobby. Use a custom game when you want a private ruleset, organized practice, or a no-pressure demonstration.

Street Brawl groups

Street Brawl uses four-player teams and short rounds. It can suit a smaller group or players who want repeated engagements without the full time commitment of Standard. Its round structure also makes it easier to identify one specific weakness, such as poor cooldown timing, and try again quickly.

What are the current Ranked requirements?

The current requirements listed after the October 6 patch are 60 Standard wins and three heroes unlocked. Season 1 is scheduled to end on November 5, 2026. Ranked permits solo or duo queues, rather than unrestricted larger parties.

These are current eligibility rules, not permanent guarantees. Valve has explicitly said that progression-related systems remain subject to change before full release. If Ranked is locked, check the in-game requirement panel and the latest patch information instead of relying on an older guide. Track Standard wins and hero unlocks as you play; bot victories do not replace the stated Standard-win requirement.

What changed with hero bans and party requirements?

A January 30, 2026 Valve update added hero banning to Standard and Street Brawl. Players can mark one hero they want to avoid, and two total bans are used. The change gives teams a limited way to remove a particularly uncomfortable matchup without turning every draft into a long competitive process.

The same update changed roster requirements for larger parties: parties of three or more need four heroes in their roster rather than three. If a friend cannot join a group, check the number of unlocked heroes and the party size before troubleshooting the connection.

How should a new player practice?

Start with the tutorial and Sandbox

Use the tutorial to learn movement, shooting, melee, abilities, lane structure, and the shop. Move to Sandbox to test ability ranges, cooldowns, movement routes, and purchases without risking a team result. Notice which abilities require a new button or action after unlocking and which only alter an existing action.

Use bots to build a repeatable routine

Begin with easy bots, then increase difficulty when you can reliably collect lane income, return to safety, and spend before major fights. Bot matches are also a good place to compare two heroes using the same criteria: range, mobility, durability, control demands, and how forgiving mistakes feel.

Review decisions, not only aim

After a lost fight, identify whether the cause was positioning, missing ammunition, an unspent soul advantage, an unavailable cooldown, or an item that did not address the threat. This diagnosis is more useful than simply deciding that a hero is weak.

Common problems and practical fixes

Invite or access problems

  • Confirm that the inviting friend already has Deadlock on Steam.
  • Check that both accounts are using the same current Steam client and that the invite was sent through Steam rather than an unofficial access claim.
  • Do not pay a third party for access; the current model is invitation-based, not a purchasable key.

Crashes, stutter, or launch failures

Start with standard PC checks: verify the game’s files in Steam, update graphics drivers, disable conflicting overlays, and confirm that DirectX 11 and Windows updates are current. If the game launches but stutters, test one change at a time so you can identify whether an overlay, driver, or graphics setting caused the improvement. PC troubleshooting software can automate some checks, but verify its program, compatibility, and availability before installing anything.

Ranked or party access is blocked

Open the current in-game eligibility panel. For Ranked, verify the 60 Standard wins and three unlocked heroes listed for the current season. For a party of three or more, verify that each affected account has four heroes available under the January 30 roster rule. Requirements can change while the game is unfinished.

Is Deadlock free, and is it ready for everyone?

Deadlock is described as free, but it is not openly available to everyone yet. The combination of free access and invitation-only distribution means “free” does not currently mean “downloadable by any Steam user.” There is also no announced release date, and Valve is still revising core progression and customization systems.

For players who can obtain an invitation, the current version offers a substantial hero roster, several practice and competitive activities, and a full team-based lane game. For everyone else, the practical answer is to wait for an official access change rather than purchase an unofficial invitation or assume that a console edition is imminent.
