Deadlock beginner’s guide: controls, objectives, and how a match works

Deadlock is won by destroying the enemy Patron, not by finishing with the most eliminations. It combines third-person shooting, hero abilities, lane waves, a shared map economy and a sequence of defensive structures. Your basic loop is to collect souls, buy useful items, level abilities, preserve an escape route, and turn successful fights into permanent map progress.

This guide explains the controls by function rather than assuming one universal keyboard layout, then walks through souls, denies, Guardians, Walkers, base defenses, neutral objectives and a practical first-match plan. Keybinds can be changed, and controller and keyboard prompts may differ between configurations.

What Deadlock is and what you are trying to accomplish

Deadlock is a 6v6 third-person MOBA shooter. You aim and move your hero directly, but the match also has lane waves, an item economy, ability progression, defensive structures and map objectives. A good aim duel can win a few seconds; a good decision converts those seconds into souls, a structure, safer territory or an objective reward.

The win condition is the enemy Patron. Kills are useful because they remove a defender and create time, but the scoreboard is not the finish line. A team that chases a low-probability kill while abandoning a wave can lose the economic exchange. A team that wins a fight and immediately damages a Guardian, Walker or base defense creates progress that remains after everyone respawns.

The recurring match loop

  1. Take a lane. Position near the current wave and help clear it while watching enemy movement.
  2. Secure souls. Collect souls from lane activity and nearby rewards. Watch for flying soul orbs that an opponent may deny.
  3. Spend with a purpose. Buy an item or improvement that answers the next problem instead of purchasing randomly.
  4. Choose a deliberate move. Stay for the next wave, defend a structure, protect an ally, rotate, or join an objective only when the destination has a clear payoff.
  5. Convert fights into progress. After a won exchange, take the safest available wave, structure, map position or objective.
  6. Reset before the map resets you. Return when health, ammunition, stamina, position or enemy respawn timers make a continued push unsafe.

Deadlock’s Getting Started guidance emphasizes returning from a trade with enough health, ammunition and position to collect the next wave. Track flying soul orbs and nearby pickups separately: winning the shooting exchange does not automatically mean you secured every reward.

Controls: learn functions before memorizing keys

There is no single immutable default keyboard table to rely on. Deadlock supports remappable keybinds, and updates can change button glyphs or hints for keyboard, mouse and controller. Open the game’s controls or keybind settings and confirm the displayed inputs for your layout before entering a match.

The essential control groups

  • Movement and camera: move your hero, turn the camera and control your aim. Camera placement determines what you can see before you commit to a lane or corner.
  • Weapon handling: fire, stop firing, reload and switch attention between targets. Reloading at the wrong moment can turn a winning duel into a retreat.
  • Traversal: jump or mantle, crouch or slide, and dash. These are not cosmetic motions; they determine whether you can cross a gap, avoid a shot or leave a bad fight.
  • Hero abilities: four ability inputs are available for your selected hero. Read the ability descriptions, identify the short sequence you intend to use, and notice which ability is your escape or defensive response.
  • Active items: purchased actives have their own input and cooldown. The Slowing Hex item page gives an example binding group of Z/X/C/V; your actual assignment may differ. Treat these keys as deliberate decisions, not passive bonuses.
  • Information controls: learn the scoreboard, minimap and any extra-information or button-hint controls. Looking at the map before rotating is usually more valuable than arriving quickly at the wrong place.

A two-minute controls check

  1. Enter a practice or low-pressure environment and move in every direction while keeping the camera on a target.
  2. Fire, reload and repeat the sequence while moving. Notice how much time you are exposed during a reload.
  3. Jump or mantle, crouch or slide, then dash. Confirm which actions consume stamina and whether the movement feels different in the air.
  4. Cast each of your four abilities once. Identify the ability that starts a fight, the one that protects or disables, and the one that gets you out.
  5. Activate each equipped item and read its cooldown indicator. If an active item is bound to a key you cannot reach reliably, rebind it before the match.
  6. Open the scoreboard and minimap without losing control of your hero. You should be able to check both between waves.

Movement and stamina: keep an escape available

Stamina is a budget for reaching a position while retaining a response. Walking, sliding and mantling can preserve options; dashes and aerial actions have limits. The common beginner error is spending every movement option to enter a fight, then discovering that the only retreat is on cooldown or unavailable.

Use movement for a reason

  • Approach: use cover, ordinary movement or a slide when a dash is not necessary. Arriving with stamina lets you dodge the first threatening ability.
  • Commit: spend a dash when it changes the exchange—closing a confirmed gap, avoiding a lethal line, or reaching cover—not merely because it is available.
  • Escape: reserve at least one reliable movement response when you are near an enemy, under a tower-like structure or carrying valuable souls.
  • Traverse: mantles and aerial actions can open routes, but do not assume every route remains safe while opponents are missing from the minimap.

Before you step into range, ask, “If two enemies appear, what is my exit?” If the answer is “none,” wait for the wave, reposition or ask an ally to create pressure first.

Souls, denies and ability points

Souls are both Deadlock’s match economy and a progression resource. Lane activity and nearby rewards provide souls; you then spend them on items and growth. Because souls affect your immediate equipment and your hero’s development, losing a wave can weaken you twice: you have less to spend and less progression than the opponent who collected it.

What a deny means

A deny is contesting an enemy’s flying soul orb. When an orb appears, the opponent may be trying to secure it; your response is to contest that orb rather than treating the event as a normal body-shot duel. Watch the space above and around the wave, not only the heroes standing on the ground.

Souls versus AP

Ability points (AP) are separate from souls. The glossary uses AP for ability points, while souls are the economic resource that also drives progression. Do not assume that having enough souls automatically grants an ability point, or that an ability-point decision can be replaced by an item purchase.

How to value a decision

When an enemy is visible, do not make “fight” the automatic choice. Compare four immediate values:

  • The next wave: can you safely collect its souls and prevent the opponent from doing so?
  • A purchase: would returning to spend now solve the damage, survivability or mobility problem that caused your last trade?
  • A defensive response: is an ally or structure about to be pressured while you chase?
  • An objective: does your team have the health, ammunition, position and enemy respawn advantage to take it?

Leaving lane is strongest when you can state the purpose in one sentence: protect an ally, defend a structure, secure a known reward or join a fight that can produce lasting progress. “The enemy was on screen” is not a purpose.

How the objective chain works

Structures create the map’s lasting progress. The current game data listed by Deadlock.io in 2026 gives the following health values:

Structure Current listed health What it means
Guardian 5,500 HP First major lane defense. Removing it opens safer pressure toward the next lane objective.
Walker 4,000 HP Lane objective behind the Guardian. Destroying an enemy Walker opens an extra item slot.
Base Guardian 6,000 HP Base defense that must be handled before the final base sequence can be completed.
Patron 12,000 HP Final enemy objective; destroying it ends the match.

These are current game-data figures for 2026, not universal values for every future patch. Health, rules and objective stages can change with updates, so read the in-game indicators when a patch changes the map.

Guardians

Guardians are the first major defenses in a lane. A won skirmish near a Guardian matters because it can let your wave reach the structure while the defender is dead or forced away. Do not treat the Guardian as free damage: keep enough health and ammunition to disengage if the enemy returns, and avoid spending every movement option under pressure.

  • Compact, portable design with convenient built-in storage for included USB wireless receiver

Walkers

Walkers sit farther along the lane after the Guardian. Their destruction is more than a health-bar trade: it opens an extra item slot for the team that destroys the enemy Walker. That permanent advantage is why a coordinated push after a won fight is often worth more than chasing a second elimination.

Base Guardians and the final approach

Base Guardians protect the base area. Reaching the base does not make the Patron immediately killable. Remaining defenses and the current objective stage determine what can be attacked, so check which structures and shrines still stand before calling for a final push.

The Patron

The Patron is the match-ending objective and is listed at 12,000 HP in the current 2026 game data. Attack it only when the required defenses have been cleared and your team can remain in the base area long enough to finish. If the enemy respawns or your health collapses, reset instead of converting a nearly won position into a wipe.

Other map objectives and when to take them

Not every objective serves the same purpose. The map guide describes a Rejuvenator as providing team revive credits and the Soul Urn as providing a delivery reward. Urn delivery and Unstable Rift are separate events with different preparations; do not assume that preparing for one automatically prepares your team for the other.

Rejuvenator and Mid-Boss

A Rejuvenator’s revive credits can change the value of a risky team fight. Consider it when your team has enough health, damage and vision to finish, and when enemy respawn timers make a contest unlikely to become a disaster. If several opponents are missing and your team cannot leave safely, the reward may not justify starting the attempt.

Soul Urn

The Soul Urn requires a delivery and grants its own reward. Before carrying or escorting it, decide who can protect the route, who will collect the lane rewards that are being abandoned, and whether the enemy can intercept. The carrier’s route and the team’s ability to disengage matter as much as the reward itself.

Unstable Rift and neutral camps

Unstable Rift is a separate event from Urn delivery, with different preparation requirements. Neutral camps and other map events should be selected according to reward, timing, current health and enemy respawns. A neutral reward is not automatically correct simply because it is available; taking it may expose a lane or delay a structure that is worth more.

Turning a won fight into map progress

After an enemy dies or retreats, make the next decision quickly. Use this order of questions:

  1. Can we safely take the nearby wave? Collect its souls and deny the opponent a free recovery.
  2. Can we damage a structure? If the wave is present and the remaining defenders cannot contest, pressure the Guardian or Walker.
  3. Is a map objective better? Check health, ammunition, enemy respawns and the reward before rotating away.
  4. Can we leave? If your health, stamina or ammunition is low, reset after securing the safe value. Do not turn a won exchange into a counter-kill.

This is the difference between a temporary advantage and a lasting one. A kill that produces no wave, structure, objective or improved position may be less valuable than a disciplined reset.

Abilities, item activations and team language

Learn one short ability sequence before trying to master every possible combo. Know which input starts pressure, which one controls or damages the target, which active item helps the exchange, and which ability or movement option gets you out. Keep cooldowns in mind when deciding whether to approach a second target.

Terms that prevent callout confusion

  • Rotation: moving toward another part of the map. Name the destination, such as “rotate to Walker,” rather than saying only “rotate.”
  • Peeling: helping an ally escape pressure. Say who needs peeling and from which attacker.
  • Spirit Power: a stat. It is not the same phrase as spirit damage, which is a damage type.
  • Silence: prevents specified abilities or actions.
  • Stun: disables the target for its stated duration.
  • Disarm: removes the ability to use the affected weapon or attack.
  • Immobilize: prevents movement while other actions may remain possible, depending on the effect.

Use the target and destination with each term: “peel our low-health carry,” “silence the diver,” or “rotate to defend the Guardian.” Clear language helps teammates act on the call instead of guessing what you mean.

  • Range and aim demand: how much accuracy is required to secure rewards and deal damage?
  • Team utility: can you protect, control or peel for an ally?
  • Escape reliability: what remains when the first engagement fails?
  • Objective conversion: after winning a fight, how clearly can the hero help take a wave, structure or map objective?

For a first match, choose a hero whose basic attack and one short ability sequence you can execute consistently. Complexity can come later; reliable farming, movement and objective decisions teach the foundations shared by every hero.

A practical first-match plan

Before the match

  1. Confirm movement, fire, reload, jump or mantle, crouch or slide, dash, four abilities, active items, scoreboard and minimap inputs.
  2. Read the hero’s abilities and identify one engage sequence and one escape response.
  3. Decide which active item you will try to use and where it is bound.

During the opening lane

  1. Stay near the wave long enough to collect souls. Do not walk away for a low-probability chase while safe rewards are available.
  2. Watch flying soul orbs and contest denies when doing so does not expose you to a lethal trade.
  3. Keep stamina for the next exchange. Use ordinary movement, cover, slides or mantles when a dash is unnecessary.
  4. Return to spend when your purchase has a clear job and before the opponent receives a free push.

When a fight starts

  1. Check whether your escape movement and key defensive cooldown are available.
  2. Use the short sequence you practiced rather than improvising every ability.
  3. Activate an item deliberately; remember that an active is another cooldown, not a passive stat.
  4. After the exchange, look at the wave, structure and objective before chasing a retreating target.

When your team wins space

  1. Collect the safe wave and nearby souls.
  2. Pressure the nearest Guardian or Walker if the wave and health allow it.
  3. Choose a Rejuvenator, Urn, Unstable Rift or neutral camp only when its reward and timing fit the current position.
  4. Reset when health, ammunition, stamina or enemy respawns make a finish unsafe.

Common beginner mistakes and fixes

“We won the kill, so we should keep chasing.”

Fix: check the next wave and nearest structure first. If the chase abandons souls or lets the opponent return to a free push, take the guaranteed value instead.

“I used every dash to get into range.”

Fix: preserve one response for the exit. Approach with walking, cover, sliding or a mantle when those options are sufficient.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I reached the base, so the Patron should be vulnerable.”

Fix: inspect the remaining defenses and current objective stage. Base access alone does not bypass Base Guardians, shrines or other required defenses.

“Souls and AP are the same progression.”

Fix: treat souls as the economy and progression resource used for items and growth, while AP means ability points. Make each purchase and ability-point decision separately.

“An active item will help automatically.”

Fix: verify its binding, range, target and cooldown. Press it at the moment it changes the exchange rather than waiting until the fight is already lost.

“The strongest objective is always the right objective.”

Fix: compare reward, timing, health and enemy respawns. A delayed structure push or a safe wave can be better than starting an objective your team cannot finish or escape.

Quick reference checklist

  • Know your remapped movement, weapon, ability and active-item inputs.
  • Enter each exchange with a movement response available.
  • Collect souls from the wave and watch for flying orbs that can be denied.
  • Spend souls on a clear problem and return before giving up a free push.
  • After a won fight, secure a wave, structure, objective or better position.
  • Remember the structure chain: Guardian, Walker, Base Guardian and the staged route to the Patron.
  • Choose Rejuvenator, Soul Urn, Unstable Rift or neutral camps according to reward and timing, not habit.
  • Call out the target and destination when using terms such as rotation, peel, silence, stun, disarm or immobilize.
  • Reset when health, ammunition, stamina or enemy respawns make the next step unsafe.
