Sacrificing a limb can produce the burst that saves a fight, but it also removes that limb’s passive benefit until you find or buy a replacement. The reliable approach is to spend a limb only when its active effect changes the immediate outcome, then preserve enough card slots and passive bonuses to keep making strong hands afterward.
This guide explains the combat loop, the limb trade-off, hand construction, Encased and Stitched cards, route planning, the free demo’s scope, and what is still unknown about the unreleased full game.

How Deadhand Theater combat works
Deadhand Theater is a dark, turn-based roguelike deckbuilder in which playing-card hands command a shadow puppet’s attacks. You select cards from the available hand, form a recognized poker combination, and resolve the attack associated with that combination. The cards are therefore more than damage values: they are the syntax of your combat commands.
The system uses standard suits and ranks as its foundation, but it is not limited to a conventional five-card poker table. Documented combinations include pairs, straights, flushes, full houses, wrapping ace-to-ace straights, ten of a kind, and other game-specific patterns. A single play can satisfy several patterns at once. For example, a selection containing a pair, three of a kind, and a qualifying high card can activate all of the corresponding hand effects if the game recognizes each pattern in that play.

That makes every turn an efficiency problem. You are choosing between the strongest hand you can make now, the number of card slots that hand consumes, and the combinations your remaining cards can support on later turns.
When to sacrifice a limb
Every limb has two jobs: an active effect you can trigger by tearing it off during battle and a passive bonus that works while the limb remains attached. The active effect is a short-term swing. The passive is an ongoing part of your build. Once you sacrifice the limb, its passive disappears and stays unavailable until you find or purchase a replacement.
The following decision rule is a strategic inference from those documented mechanics, not a developer-published optimal strategy.

Use the sacrifice when the present fight is the limiting problem
- Stop imminent lethal damage. If the enemy’s next attack is likely to end the encounter and the limb effect can prevent, interrupt, or otherwise change that outcome, the immediate survival value can outweigh several turns of passive bonuses.
- Finish a dangerous enemy. A sacrifice is more defensible when the active effect removes an enemy that would otherwise continue applying pressure, summon help, or consume your next turns.
- Create a decisive multi-trigger turn. If losing the limb lets you assemble a hand that fires several effects at once, use it when that burst converts a marginal position into a winning one rather than merely improving an already safe turn.
Keep the limb when the fight is already under control
If your current hand can win without the active effect, preserving the passive is usually the safer line. A passive that supports every turn of a long encounter has compounding value, while a spent limb contributes nothing until replacement. Avoid paying a permanent build cost for damage you did not need.
Run a four-question check before clicking sacrifice
- Can this hand win without the limb? Compare the best ordinary play with the outcome after sacrificing. If both lines survive comfortably, keep the limb.
- Does the active effect change the next one or two turns? Look for a lethal threat, a required interrupt, or a high-value hand that cannot otherwise be assembled.
- How far away is a replacement? A known Bazaar, shop event, or other replacement opportunity lowers the long-term cost. A long route with no such stop makes the sacrifice more expensive.
- Will the remaining limbs and deck still support your plan? Do not remove the passive that your deck repeatedly relies on unless the immediate battle is worth rebuilding around.
What you lose and how replacement works
The cost of a sacrifice is not limited to the animation or the current turn. The passive modifier is gone for the rest of that stretch of the run. Replacement limbs can be found or bought through the Bazaar or shop-style events described for the game’s route structure. Until that happens, every future hand is evaluated with one fewer passive contribution.

This creates two different time horizons:
- Battle horizon: the active effect may prevent defeat or produce a winning burst immediately.
- Route horizon: the missing passive may weaken several upcoming fights, and the next replacement may require currency, a detour, or a favorable event.
Plan around both. Sacrificing just before a sequence of difficult encounters with no merchant is a different decision from sacrificing immediately before a shop. The game does not publish limb names, numerical effects, encounter tables, or tested win-rate data, so there is no evidence-based universal ranking of the “best” limb to keep or remove. Evaluate the passive you currently have, the active effect you need now, and the route you can actually see.
How poker hands become attacks
Build around recognized patterns, not isolated card values
Start each turn by identifying the strongest pattern your available cards can complete. A large individual rank is useful only if it also contributes to a recognized hand or to a deliberate independent-scaling plan. Cards that do not fit your likely combinations can consume slots without improving the command you can issue.

| Pattern | What is established | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| Pair | A repeated rank is a recognized command. | Use when it is the best available trigger or when it nests inside a larger selection. |
| Three of a kind | Three matching ranks can trigger their own hand effect. | Check whether adding the third card also preserves another trigger. |
| Straight | Sequential ranks are recognized. | Protect the missing rank or suit-independent sequence pieces your deck needs. |
| Flush | Matching suits are recognized. | Do not dilute a suit-focused hand with cards that consume slots but break the pattern. |
| Full house | A pair and three of a kind can form a larger recognized hand. | It may be more valuable to complete the full house than to fire the smaller pattern alone. |
| Wrapping ace-to-ace straight | The game includes a straight that wraps from ace back to ace. | Treat ace as part of a special sequence rather than assuming ordinary poker order only. |
| Ten of a kind | The game lists this as a possible combination despite it not being a normal single-deck hand. | Regard it as a game-specific objective whose availability depends on the run’s card system. |
The table describes recognized categories, not their damage numbers. The available material does not publish a complete effect chart, so do not infer that a particular hand always has the highest damage or the best status effect.
Exploit overlapping triggers
Deadhand Theater can score multiple hands from one selection. A play can therefore be stronger than its largest label suggests: the same cards may count as a high card, a pair, and three of a kind, for example. Before committing, inspect which patterns the whole selection satisfies and whether adding or removing one card preserves more effects.

Overlapping triggers also explain why a slightly smaller-looking hand can be correct. If a five-card selection produces one large effect but a four-card selection produces two effects and leaves a useful card for the next turn, compare the total command value rather than the name of the biggest hand.
Card slots are a resource
The combat puzzle is not simply “make the biggest hand.” Card slots determine how many compatible pieces you can hold and play. A card that is powerful on its own can be a poor inclusion if it blocks the combinations your deck is built to assemble.
Encased Card
An Encased Card has its rank doubled, but it occupies two hand slots. It rewards a focused build that can exploit the doubled rank while accepting reduced room for other cards. The practical question is whether the extra rank value is worth losing one slot that could have completed a pair, sequence, flush, or multi-trigger selection.
Stitched Card
A Stitched Card gains one rank per attack, making it an independent scaling damage piece. It cannot form poker hands. That means it should be evaluated separately from combo cards: its value comes from repeated attacks and growth, not from helping complete a pair, straight, or other recognized pattern.
| Modifier | Known rule | Primary trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Encased | Rank is doubled; card uses two hand slots. | Higher focused value versus less room for combination pieces. |
| Stitched | Rank increases by one per attack; cannot form poker hands. | Scaling independent damage versus no contribution to combo triggers. |
Compare a build on four axes: hand strength and multi-trigger potential, slot efficiency, independent scaling versus combo dependence, and the future flexibility lost when a card or limb is sacrificed. A deck can support both styles, but they ask for different turn planning. Encased wants the rest of the hand to make its expensive slot worthwhile; Stitched wants enough safe attacks to grow before the encounter ends.

A turn-by-turn method for winning poker fights
- Read the threat first. Identify which enemy action makes the next turn dangerous. This tells you whether survival, interruption, or damage is the priority.
- List complete and one-card-away hands. Separate combinations you can play now from patterns that need one missing rank, suit, or duplicate.
- Check for overlap. For each candidate selection, note every recognized hand it may trigger, not only the largest one.
- Audit slot costs. Include Encased Cards as two-slot commitments and exclude Stitched Cards from poker-hand plans because they cannot form those hands.
- Reserve future pieces when the current gain is marginal. A card that completes a reliable next-turn pattern can be worth more than a small increase to this turn’s isolated rank.
- Decide on the limb only after comparing ordinary lines. Sacrifice when the active effect changes the battle’s likely result or enables a decisive multi-trigger turn; otherwise keep the passive.
- After the attack, update the route plan. If a limb is gone, identify the next realistic replacement or shop opportunity and adjust your acceptable risk for the intervening fights.
This process keeps the game’s two economies visible: cards and slots determine what commands you can issue, while limbs determine how much power you can access immediately at the cost of future passive strength.
Route planning, shops, and upgrades
Coverage of the run structure describes Bazaars, Black Markets, merchant shops, rest sites, furnace upgrades, and an Upgrade Stage as places where a run can be reshaped, resources bought or improved, and missing limbs replaced. The official listing also identifies talismans, sigils, hexes, grafts, stage modifiers, and replacement limbs as part of the broader run structure.
Before a sacrifice
- Mark the next known merchant or Bazaar if the map exposes one.
- Check whether the current passive is carrying your primary hand plan.
- Keep enough card flexibility to survive the route if replacement is delayed.
At a replacement or upgrade stop
- Replace a missing limb before buying a marginal enhancement if the passive is central to your deck.
- Use upgrade opportunities to improve the plan you can assemble repeatedly, not only the highest theoretical hand.
- Reassess Encased and Stitched cards after upgrades: a slot-heavy combo plan and an independent scaling plan have different resource priorities.
Because encounter tables and limb numbers are not published, no route can be called universally optimal. Treat the map you are given as the authority for replacement timing rather than following a fixed sacrifice order.
What the free demo includes
The free Steam demo covers Act 1 from the opening encounter through that act’s boss. It includes talismans, grafts, Bazaars, Black Markets, the Upgrade Stage, and multiple difficulty settings. Acts 2 and 3, along with additional meta-progression, are reserved for the full release.
The current Steam listing gives these content counts:
Best Value
| System | Count shown on the listing | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Talismans | 60 | Current listing figure; the page does not state a separate publication year. |
| Sigils | 40 | Current listing figure; the page does not state a separate publication year. |
| Hexes | 45 | Current listing figure; the page does not state a separate publication year. |
| Grafts | 25 | Current listing figure; the page does not state a separate publication year. |
| Stage modifiers | 30 | Current listing figure; the page does not state a separate publication year. |
Those counts describe the current listing, not a promise that every item appears in Act 1 of the demo or that the totals cannot change before launch.
Release status and access
Bag Track Games is listed as both developer and publisher. The full game’s release date is marked To be announced; no public launch date has been announced. The Steam page currently provides a demo and a wishlist option rather than access to the released full campaign.
Three practical sacrifice examples
You are one attack from losing
If the enemy’s next action is likely to defeat the puppet and the limb effect can prevent that outcome or remove the threat, sacrifice is justified even when the passive is valuable. The replacement problem becomes the next route priority.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou can already win this turn
If an ordinary recognized hand defeats the enemy and leaves the passive intact, do not spend a limb merely to add excess damage. Preserve the passive for the encounters ahead.
The limb enables a multi-trigger setup
If the active effect lets you assemble a selection that fires several recognized hands and that turn removes the main threat, the sacrifice can be correct. Verify that the remaining cards still support your next reliable hand; a spectacular burst followed by unusable slots is not automatically a good exchange.
What is still unknown
Available descriptions do not establish numerical limb effects, damage tables for each poker hand, encounter-by-encounter solutions, player win rates, or a tested limb-priority tier list. They also do not establish how every modifier interacts with every unusual hand. Use the documented rules as a framework, then read the exact in-game tooltip and preview for the run in front of you rather than treating an unverified ranking as fact.
