Dead Cells Assist Mode and difficulty settings explained

Assist Mode makes Dead Cells more manageable without removing its main progression. Open Options > Assist mode, then enable only the aid that addresses your obstacle: extra lives through Continue Mode, more forgiving parries, slower traps, Auto-Hit, a revealed map, or reduced trap, enemy-health and enemy-damage values. Achievements, Boss Stem Cell acquisition and perfect-kill rewards remain available, although Daily Challenge leaderboard scores are hidden while Assist Mode is active.

What Assist Mode changes

Assist Mode arrived in the 2022 Breaking Barriers update (Update 29, dated April 12, 2022). It is not a single easy difficulty. Instead, it is a collection of independent controls for retries, timing, input, navigation and combat numbers. Motion Twin and Evil Empire described the goal as making their “tough but fair” design accessible through “tailored, specific adjustments” rather than replacing the game with broad difficulty presets.

That distinction matters. You can keep the Boss Cell level you want and change one source of frustration, such as trap damage or parry timing. You do not have to lower every challenge at once, and you can remove an option later as your confidence improves.

Progression and achievements

Using Assist Mode does not disable achievements, collecting Boss Stem Cells or earning perfect-kill rewards. The documented exception is competitive scoring: Daily Challenge leaderboard scores are hidden when Assist Mode is enabled. If you care about a leaderboard result, complete that challenge without Assist Mode; for ordinary runs and permanent progression, the assist settings remain compatible.

How to turn on Assist Mode

  1. Pause the game and open Options.
  2. Select Assist mode.
  3. Turn on the individual options you need and set their values where a slider or count is offered.
  4. Resume the run and test the change in the next room or biome. You can return to the same menu to adjust the settings again.

Start with the smallest intervention that solves the problem. For example, choose one Continue rather than reducing enemy health if a single late mistake is costing an otherwise successful run.

Every Assist Mode setting

Setting What it does Useful when Available range or detail
Continue Mode After death, resurrects you from the latest save instead of forcing a new run. A mistake near the end of a biome is the main problem. 0, 1, 3 or 7 continues, plus an infinite option.
Auto-Hit Mode Automatically attacks nearby enemies with your primary melee weapon. Repeated melee input, hand fatigue or maintaining attack rhythm is difficult. Works with the primary melee weapon; it does not replace all other actions.
Destroy doors in Auto-Hit Mode Allows Auto-Hit to attack doors as well as enemies. You want Auto-Hit to handle door-breaking without an extra attack input. Separate toggle; enable it only if door interaction is part of your input burden.
Easier Parry Gives you a longer window in which a shield parry can trigger. Enemy attacks are readable but the reaction window is too short. Timing assistance rather than a damage reduction.
Slower traps Reduces the speed of moving traps. Spikes, saws or other moving hazards defeat you during platforming or Challenge Rifts. Changes trap timing; it does not by itself reduce trap damage.
Reveal the map Reveals the current level map. You lose time or health because you cannot plan routes or find exits. Navigation aid for the current level.
Trap damage Reduces damage dealt by environmental traps. Hazards, rather than enemies, are consuming your healing and lives. 20% increments, down to 20% of normal trap damage.
Enemy health Reduces how much health enemies have. Fights are lasting so long that attrition, not execution, is the barrier. 2.5% increments, down to 20% of normal enemy health.
Enemy damage Reduces damage enemies deal when they hit you. You understand enemy patterns but are punished too heavily for occasional mistakes. 2.5% increments, down to 20% of normal enemy damage.

How Continue Mode saves your run

Continue Mode uses the latest save point. Saves are made at biome entrances and exits, boss-cell doors, lore rooms, sub-biomes and when you quit. When you die, the selected number of continues determines how many times you may resurrect from that point. With zero continues, death behaves normally; with one, three or seven, you receive that many retries. Infinite continues removes the count, but still returns you to the most recent save rather than rewinding to every room you cleared.

Because the save is tied to those locations, a continue is most valuable after reaching a new biome or a boss-cell door. It does not preserve every step taken since the last save.

Choose settings for the problem you actually have

Deaths after a mostly successful biome

Use one Continue first, or three if you are learning a boss or a high-level biome. This preserves normal enemy health, damage and attack timing while forgiving a failed attempt. Increase the count only if you are still reaching the same late point and need more practice before restarting.

Platforming, traps and Challenge Rifts

Enable Slower traps when your route knowledge is sound but moving hazards are too fast to read. Choose reduced Trap damage when you can navigate the section but a single contact costs too much health. Both can be used together, but try one at a time so you know which change solved the issue.

Parries and reaction timing

Turn on Easier Parry before changing enemy health. It keeps fights recognizable while giving you more time to trigger a shield parry. If an attack is still too punishing after you learn its cue, reduce Enemy damage rather than removing the encounter through a large health reduction.

Input fatigue or difficult repeated attacks

Auto-Hit reduces the need to press the primary attack repeatedly against nearby enemies. If opening doors is also awkward, enable Destroy doors in Auto-Hit Mode. You still need to move, avoid attacks, use skills and choose when to engage; Auto-Hit is an input aid, not an automatic run.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Getting lost or learning a route

Reveal the map is appropriate when navigation is the barrier. It lets you plan around exits, shops, challenge entrances and branching biomes without changing combat. Once you know the routes, turn it off if you want exploration to become part of the challenge again.

Enemy hits are too costly

Lower Enemy damage when you want to preserve the normal pace and enemy health bars. Lower Enemy health when fights are too long, your build lacks damage, or repeated encounters are exhausting your resources. The sliders move in 2.5% steps and can reach 20% of normal, so make small changes rather than jumping immediately to the minimum.

Assist Mode, Boss Cells and Custom Mode are different systems

System Purpose What it changes Progression effect
Assist Mode Targeted accessibility and difficulty adjustments. Retries, timing windows, input load, map visibility, trap damage, enemy health and enemy damage. Achievements, Boss Stem Cells and perfect-kill rewards remain available; Daily Challenge leaderboard scores are hidden.
Boss Cells The game’s built-in escalation path. Raises the overall challenge as you advance through the available Boss Stem Cell levels. Defines the difficulty level of the run and remains selectable while Assist Mode is used.
Custom Mode A separate loadout and balancing system. Changes item pools and run rules according to its own restrictions and selections. It is not an alternate name for Assist Mode; evaluate its rules separately.

A practical approach is to select the Boss Cell level you want, enable one Assist Mode control, and remove that control when the underlying skill improves. This lets you practice at the intended escalation level without treating every obstacle as a reason to abandon the run.

Suggested starting configurations

Learning the game without changing combat

  • Continue Mode: 1.
  • Reveal the map: on if route planning is unfamiliar.
  • All combat sliders: normal.
  • Easier Parry: on only if shield timing is the specific obstacle.

This setup gives a new player a safety net while leaving enemy behavior and damage intact.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Practising bosses

  • Continue Mode: 3 or 7, depending on how many attempts you need from the latest save.
  • Enemy damage: reduce modestly if one mistake ends the attempt.
  • Enemy health: leave normal so attack patterns and fight length remain familiar.
  • Easier Parry: on for a shield-focused build that is still learning timing.

After you can identify each telegraph, restore enemy damage and keep only the retry count needed for independent practice.

Making a trap-heavy route accessible

  • Slower traps: on.
  • Trap damage: reduce in small increments if contact remains unavoidable.
  • Reveal the map: optional, especially when a route contains multiple vertical branches.
  • Enemy settings: unchanged unless combat is also a problem.

Reducing physical input demands

  • Auto-Hit Mode: on.
  • Destroy doors in Auto-Hit Mode: on if door attacks are tiring.
  • Easier Parry: optional if precise shield timing is also difficult.
  • Keep at least one Continue while you learn how movement and skills interact with Auto-Hit.

Trade-offs and limits to understand

  • Assist Mode is granular, not consequence-free. Lowering enemy health or damage changes the combat workload, so a build that succeeds with those settings may feel different when you restore normal values.
  • Continue Mode is a retry system, not a rewind button. You return to the latest documented save location, not the exact room where you died.
  • Slower traps and lower trap damage solve different problems. One changes the timing of the hazard; the other changes the penalty for being hit.
  • Reveal the map does not reveal combat solutions. You still need to handle enemies, doors, timed sections and route decisions.
  • Auto-Hit does not automate survival. Movement, dodges, shields, skills and positioning remain under your control.
  • Daily Challenge competition is separate. If leaderboard placement matters, disable Assist Mode before starting the scored challenge.

Troubleshooting common questions

The Assist Mode menu is missing

Pause the game and check Options for Assist mode. Assist Mode was added with the Breaking Barriers update, so an unupdated installation may not show the menu. Update the game through your platform’s normal game-update process, then check the same path again.

I enabled Continue Mode but still restarted far away

Confirm that you selected a nonzero number of continues. Also remember the save locations: biome entrances and exits, boss-cell doors, lore rooms, sub-biomes and quitting. A death after moving beyond the latest save returns you there, not to every room visited during the attempt.

Will lowering damage stop me earning a Boss Stem Cell?

No. Assist Mode does not disable Boss Stem Cell acquisition. You can lower enemy or trap damage and continue working toward the game’s Boss Cell progression.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is my Daily Challenge score not on the leaderboard?

Assist Mode hides Daily Challenge leaderboard scores. Complete the challenge with Assist Mode disabled if you need a qualifying leaderboard result.

Bottom line

Use Assist Mode as a set of precise controls, not as an all-or-nothing easy mode. Start with the smallest change that addresses your barrier—one Continue for late deaths, Easier Parry for timing, Slower traps or lower Trap damage for hazards, Auto-Hit for input load, Reveal the map for navigation, and Enemy damage or health reductions for combat strain. You can keep your Boss Cell level and permanent progression while adjusting the parts of Dead Cells that prevent you from playing effectively.
