Dead by Daylight is worth considering if you want tense, repeatable online matches built around a genuinely different choice of role. One player is the Killer; four others are Survivors who cooperate while trying to evade that Killer and escape. The same structure that makes each side distinctive also creates the game’s main costs: you need reliable online access, the rules and progression systems take time to learn, and editions, add-ons and account-transfer rules require careful checking before you buy.
What Dead by Daylight is
Dead by Daylight is an asymmetrical multiplayer horror game rather than a conventional team-versus-team shooter. A single Killer hunts four Survivors. The Killer’s objective is to stop their escape, while Survivors work together to evade the Killer and get out alive. PlayStation’s official description presents the choice as becoming an unstoppable Killer or one of four Survivors trying to avoid a gruesome death. Xbox’s store listing identifies Behaviour Interactive as both developer and publisher and lists online multiplayer for two to five players, online co-op for two to four, cross-platform multiplayer and cross-generation play.

Those descriptions explain the design, not a promise that every match will feel equally fair, easy or exciting to every person. The appeal is an editorial inference from the opposing jobs: stalking and applying pressure is a fundamentally different activity from hiding, coordinating and escaping. If you enjoy learning how two sides of the same ruleset interact, that contrast can provide a strong reason to keep returning. If you prefer a self-contained single-player campaign or offline play, the format is a poor fit.

The strongest reasons to play
Two roles create a clear strategic identity
Many multiplayer games ask every participant to perform a variation of the same combat role. Dead by Daylight instead divides the match into one hunter and a four-person escape team. Playing Killer emphasizes tracking and controlling the pace of a match; playing Survivor emphasizes awareness, cooperation and choosing when to help teammates or prioritize escape. The official descriptions establish these objectives, while the likely appeal of the contrast is a matter of taste. A player who enjoys switching perspectives can get two very different games from the same purchase.
#1 Best Overall
Matches are naturally replayable
The central contest is designed for repeated online encounters rather than a one-time story. Each match asks the Killer to find and stop Survivors while the team attempts to complete its escape plan. That repeatable structure can suit players who like short sessions, gradual improvement and experimenting with different characters. It does not guarantee a particular queue time, balance level or quality of teammates; those experiences can change with platform, region, settings and the live service’s current population.
Character progression gives experimentation a purpose
PlayStation and Xbox descriptions highlight character-specific progression and unlockable customization. Progression can give a returning player a reason to try another character, adjust a build or pursue a cosmetic goal instead of treating every match as an isolated event. The trade-off is density. More characters, unlocks and systems create more choices, but they also create more terminology and decisions for a newcomer to absorb.
Cross-play can widen the social pool
Behaviour’s cross-play FAQ says supported platforms can play together, which is useful when friends own different consoles or a PC version. Cross-play is a capability, not a guarantee that every feature, entitlement or device is interchangeable. The exact platform support and store rules still matter, and a player can choose to disable cross-play only with a matchmaking consequence described below.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe game is still being developed
Dead by Daylight is an active live service rather than a finished product whose systems are frozen. In a March 19, 2026 PC Gamer interview, Behaviour senior creative director Dave Richard said the studio was putting more emphasis on quality-of-life work and preparing major system changes. PC Gamer also reported that the All-Kill update added adjustable Aura colors. These are dated reports about a particular update and direction, not a guarantee that every planned improvement has shipped by the time you read this.
The main drawbacks to weigh before buying
Online access is part of the product
The PlayStation product page states that online play is required and that PS Plus is required for online play. Xbox’s listing identifies online multiplayer capabilities for the Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming versions. Subscription policies differ by platform, territory and account type, so check the store page for the region in which you will play. The practical implication is simple: this is not a purchase to make if you need an offline game that remains fully useful without an internet connection.
The learning curve is real
There are two roles to learn, a large cast of characters, progression choices and a live-service vocabulary that has accumulated over time. Richard described the problem candidly in the March 2026 interview: “We’re preparing big system changes because after 10 years, our game has become increasingly difficult to enter, to understand, and it’s becoming dense for some players, so we want to make sure that it’s more accessible.”

- Survive together…or not. Survivors can either cooperate with the others, or be selfish. Chances for survival depend on your decisions.
- Where am I? Each level is procedurally generated, so you'll never know what to expect. Random spawn points mean you'll never feel safe!
- A feast for killers - Dead by Daylight draws deom all corners of the horror world. Play anything from a powerful Slasher to a terrifying paranormal entity. Master each Killer's unique power to be able to hunt, catch, and sacrifice your victims.
- Deeper and deeper - Each Killer and Survivor has their own deep progression system and plenty of unlockables that can be customized to fit your own personal strategy.
- Real people, real fear - You'll never know how things will turn out. Ambience, music, and chilling environments combine into a terrifying experience. With enough time, you might even discover what's hiding in the fog.
That is a named developer’s assessment of onboarding complexity, not proof that the game is objectively too difficult for everyone. New players can reasonably expect to spend time learning objectives, character abilities and the consequences of their choices before the systems feel intuitive. Someone who dislikes tutorials, wiki reading or gradual mastery should treat that time commitment as a significant cost.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Current console storefronts show multiple editions and many separately purchasable add-ons. The exact bundles, characters and prices vary by territory and change over time. Optional in-game purchases are listed on the PlayStation page; the existence of those purchases does not establish that every add-on is required to enjoy the base game. Before paying more, identify which characters or extras are actually included in the edition you are viewing and which remain separate purchases.
Do not compare a low-priced base edition with a larger bundle as though they contain the same product. A bundle may include chapters or cosmetic content that a standard copy does not, while a base game may be the sensible choice if you want to learn the core loop first.
Turning off cross-play narrows matchmaking
Behaviour says that disabling cross-play restricts matchmaking to people on the same platform who have also disabled it. The FAQ warns that matchmaking may take longer in that configuration. This is a conditional trade-off, not evidence that normal queues are always long: leaving cross-play enabled gives the system a broader pool, while disabling it gives you a narrower one.
Moving accounts later can be complicated
Cross-progression is not a frictionless “play anywhere” switch. Behaviour’s account guidance says that once platform accounts are synced, they cannot be unsynced. Nintendo Switch has additional rules: Auric Cells remain tied to the platform, DLC can share from other platforms to Switch but not from Switch to other platforms, and some platform-exclusive items and settings do not sync. If you might change platforms, read the current Behaviour FAQ before linking anything; an irreversible account decision is a poor place to rely on assumptions.

- Play the series that revolutionized storytelling in games. The Walking Dead: The Telltale Definitive Series contains all 4 Seasons, 400 Days DLC, and The Walking Dead: Michonne.
- “Graphic black” art style brings Season 4's enhanced visual style to all previous seasons of the acclaimed series.
- Exclusive looks at the making of the game from the developers, VO artists, and other team members that brought Clementine’s story to life.
- Character performances, lip syncing, and other gameplay and UI enhancements make this the definitive Telltale’s The Walking Dead experience.
- Music player that includes 140+ tracks across all seasons, art gallery, 3D model viewer with playable voice lines, & new 3D front end.
- Identify your platform and store region. The US PlayStation page lists PS4 and PS5 editions, including the base game and a 10th Anniversary Edition. The US Xbox store lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Treat those as examples of current listings, not a promise that every edition or entitlement appears in every country.
- Decide whether the base game is enough. Read the selected store page’s contents list. Check whether the characters, chapters or cosmetic items you want are included rather than assuming an anniversary or deluxe label contains everything.
- Check the online requirement and subscription. PlayStation lists PS Plus for online play. Confirm the equivalent rule, if any, for your platform and region before budgeting for the game.
- Ask where your friends play. If they use other supported platforms, leave cross-play enabled unless you have a specific reason to opt out. Disabling it limits you to same-platform players who made the same choice.
- Plan for a possible platform move. Review the current cross-progression rules before syncing accounts, with special attention to Switch Auric Cells, DLC direction and irreversible unsyncing.
- Compare like with like. Check the same territory, platform, edition contents and subscription assumptions. A storefront price without those qualifications is not a meaningful comparison.
What the main options actually differ on
| Decision point | What is established | What you must verify |
|---|---|---|
| Platform compatibility | PlayStation lists PS4 and PS5; Xbox lists Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Xbox Cloud Gaming. | Your local store’s edition, generation entitlement and cloud-access terms. |
| Online play | PlayStation marks online play as required and requires PS Plus for online play; Xbox lists online multiplayer. | Your platform’s current subscription rule and regional exceptions. |
| Edition contents | Storefronts list a base game, a PlayStation 10th Anniversary Edition and numerous add-ons. | Exactly which chapters, characters and cosmetics are in the edition you are buying. |
| Playing with friends | Behaviour describes cross-play across supported platforms and Xbox lists cross-platform multiplayer. | Whether each friend’s platform is supported and whether anyone has disabled cross-play. |
| Future account movement | Behaviour supports account syncing with important limitations; synced accounts cannot be unsynced. | Current rules for your platforms, especially Switch currency, DLC direction and exclusive items. |
Cross-progression details that deserve special attention
Cross-play answers “can we enter the same match?” Cross-progression answers “what follows my account?” They are separate questions. Before linking, establish which progression, purchases, currencies, settings and exclusive items are shared for the exact platforms involved. Behaviour’s rules make clear that syncing is consequential: you cannot simply reverse it later. Switch users should be especially cautious because Auric Cells stay platform-bound and DLC sharing works toward Switch from other platforms, not in the opposite direction.
If you are buying on PC because friends use consoles, or buying a console copy with a future PC move in mind, do not infer transfer rights from cross-play alone. Read the latest official account FAQ at the moment you link accounts, because live-service entitlements and platform policies can change.
What is changing in 2026?
PC Gamer’s March 2026 interview described a Year 10 roadmap with three new Killers rather than four, while still including four major chapters. Richard said the studio was testing whether a chapter built around a rework, a map and a Survivor could provide enough value, and summarized the experimentation by saying, “It’s a bit of a trial.” That should be read as the direction reported at that date, not as a permanent promise about every future chapter.
PC Gamer’s June 2026 anniversary coverage also reported planned additions such as 1v1 and zombie modes and a visual overhaul. The coverage described shown assets as work in progress. Unless a current official patch note confirms release, treat those items as planned or demonstrated concepts rather than features you can buy the game expecting to use immediately.
Who should buy it?
It is a good fit when
- You want an online multiplayer game with one-versus-four objectives rather than a conventional team shooter.
- You enjoy alternating between a hunting role and a cooperative escape role.
- You are willing to learn a large, changing ruleset and pursue character progression over time.
- Your platform supports the required online service and your friends can use cross-play.
- You are comfortable checking edition contents and treating add-ons as optional choices.
Look elsewhere when
- You need a substantial offline mode or cannot rely on online access.
- You want a simple ruleset with little character or content-menu overhead.
- You expect every purchase, currency, setting and item to transfer automatically between platforms.
- You are unwilling to verify subscription requirements, regional store listings or bundle contents before purchase.
How to interpret the available rating signal
The PlayStation Store showed an average of 4.1 stars out of five from 145K ratings when observed on October 13, 2026. That is a live storefront snapshot, not a representative survey, a universal verdict or evidence about every platform. Use it as one context signal alongside the role structure, online requirement, learning curve and account rules above.
Bottom line
Dead by Daylight’s best case is unusually clear: a repeatable online horror game where the Killer and four Survivors pursue opposing goals, supported by character progression, customization and cross-play. Its worst case is equally clear: an online-dependent live service with a dense learning curve, a growing paid-content menu and account-transfer rules that can punish careless syncing. Buy the base game when that asymmetrical loop appeals to you and you have checked your platform, subscription, edition and future-transfer needs. Skip it when offline access, simple onboarding or effortless cross-platform ownership matters more than the distinctive match design.
