Dead by Daylight Beginner’s Guide: How to Play as a Survivor or Killer

Dead by Daylight is a 1v4 trial game: one Killer hunts four Survivors. Survivors work together to repair five Generators, power the Exit Gates and escape; the Killer finds, chases, downs and Hooks Survivors to sacrifice them to the Entity. Start with the role whose decision-making sounds more appealing, learn the basic loop in a few short matches, then try the other side so you understand how opponents move, hide and apply pressure.

What you are trying to do in Dead by Daylight

Each trial places one Killer against four Survivors. The roles have deliberately unequal information and responsibilities, so success does not mean playing them the same way.

Role Primary objective What creates pressure What a beginner should learn first
Survivor Help repair five Generators, power the Exit Gates and escape. Time spent repairing, rescuing, healing, hiding and surviving chases. Move safely between cover, windows and pallets while making useful decisions for the team.
Killer Find, down and Hook Survivors so they can be sacrificed to the Entity. Chase efficiency, Hook pressure and preventing uninterrupted Generator repair. Patrol likely Generator areas, choose favorable chases and abandon unproductive ones.

The official publisher describes the Killer’s ritual as placing Survivors on Hooks as an offering to an eldritch being called the Entity. Survivors are not simply racing individually: their repairs and rescue decisions determine how much time the whole team has. A Survivor who spends too long hiding may avoid a chase but leave the team without progress; a Killer who pursues one target across the map may win that chase while allowing the other three players to finish the objective.

Behaviour Interactive’s beginner support video covers the game’s ground rules and is a useful first stop before you study advanced builds. The controls and interface differ by platform, so follow the prompts shown by your own version rather than memorizing a control list from another platform.

Should a beginner start as Survivor or Killer?

Choose Survivor first if you want cooperative play, shared information and time to observe how a trial develops. Choose Killer first if you prefer direct control, hunting and making the other side react to you. Neither role is a “practice mode” for the other, but learning both is one of the fastest ways to improve: Survivor play teaches you where a Killer is likely to search, while Killer play reveals which hiding places, routes and distractions are convincing.

Start as Survivor when you want a team-based introduction

  • You can contribute even when you are not in a chase by repairing a Generator, rescuing a teammate or healing safely.
  • You get repeated opportunities to watch how windows, pallets and cover change a pursuit.
  • The trial state gives you shared priorities: unfinished Generators, a teammate needing rescue and the eventual Exit Gates.

Start as Killer when you want to control the pace

  • You decide which area to patrol and which Survivor to pursue.
  • You learn the complete find–chase–down–Hook loop from the beginning.
  • You can focus on one target, rotate to another or interrupt repairs according to the map situation.

A practical recommendation

Play several beginner matches on one side, then switch for several matches on the other. Do not judge a role from a single loss: early games are mainly about recognizing the flow of a trial, not proving a permanent win rate. After you understand both perspectives, pick the side you enjoy and continue alternating occasionally to keep your decisions grounded in what the opponent can realistically see and do.

How to play Survivor: a complete beginner loop

1. Read the opening situation before committing

At the start, identify nearby cover and a safe route toward a window or pallet. Then choose a Generator and begin repairing unless the immediate situation makes another action urgent. Repairing is the team’s main shared objective, but standing in one exposed location without a plan can turn the first contact into a quick down.

Think in short cycles rather than one fixed task: make Generator progress, check your surroundings, relocate when the risk becomes too high, and return to productive work when the Killer moves away. The right moment to leave depends on what you can see and hear, the available cover and the trial state.

2. Treat information as a team resource

Notice which Generators are already progressing, where a teammate was Hooked and which areas have recently been searched. Even without a voice call, your actions communicate priorities: a completed Generator changes where the Killer must patrol, while a rescue changes how many people can work again. Avoid sending multiple Survivors into the same dangerous area unless the rescue or heal is genuinely urgent.

3. Repair, but do not repair on autopilot

Keep Generator repair as your default contribution when no teammate needs immediate help. Look up often enough to detect danger and keep an escape route in mind. If the Killer approaches, leave before you are trapped when a clear route is available; surviving the next chase can be worth more than squeezing out a few final seconds of repair.

When a Generator is nearly complete, consider whether finishing it now is safe or whether the Killer is about to force you away. Do not let the desire to complete one objective make you an easy down. The team needs completed Generators, but it also needs Survivors who remain able to repair, rescue and create time.

4. Make a plan for every chase

When the Killer finds you, move toward connected cover, windows and pallets rather than running randomly into the open. A strong route gives you more than one decision: vault a window if it preserves distance, use a pallet when it prevents an immediate hit or stun, and change direction when the Killer expects a predictable move.

Do not treat every pallet as something to drop instantly. Use one when it buys meaningful distance or interrupts the Killer’s route; wasting every resource early can leave the area unsafe for the rest of the team. Conversely, holding a pallet while already trapped can end the chase immediately. The useful question is not “Can I save this pallet?” but “What creates the most time for the team right now?”

5. Rescue only when the risk is manageable

A Hooked teammate needs help, but a rushed rescue can produce two downs instead of one. Before approaching, check whether the Killer is still nearby, whether another Survivor is already moving in and whether you have a retreat route. If the area is under direct pressure, wait for a safer opening rather than entering with no plan.

After a rescue, do not automatically gather in the same exposed spot. Move the rescued Survivor toward safer cover when possible, and return to a Generator or another useful task once the immediate danger has passed. A rescue is successful only when it improves the team’s position rather than creating a second easy target.

6. Heal when healing changes your options

Healing can let a teammate take a hit, survive a longer chase or complete a dangerous rescue. It also costs time and may reveal both players if done in an exposed location. Choose cover and consider whether the Killer is likely to return. If a Generator is almost complete or the team urgently needs a rescue, finishing the more important action may be safer than stopping for a full heal.

7. Adapt as the trial changes

Survivor play is a continuous choice among repairing, rescuing, healing, hiding, escaping and drawing the Killer away. A useful priority order is:

  1. Prevent an avoidable immediate down.
  2. Rescue a teammate when the Killer is not controlling the area.
  3. Keep Generator repair moving whenever no urgent rescue or chase demands attention.
  4. Use cover and environmental resources to make the next chase longer.
  5. When the Exit Gates are powered, switch from Generator planning to safe routes, teammate support and escape.

This is a priority guide, not a rigid script. The correct choice changes with the number of completed Generators, teammate locations and the Killer’s current pressure.

Survivor mistakes that cost the most time

  • Running without an exit route: begin a chase with a destination that includes cover, a window or a pallet.
  • Leaving every Generator at the first sign of danger: move when necessary, but return to productive work after the threat passes.
  • Stacking several Survivors on one rescue: send only the help the situation requires while others keep repairing.
  • Healing in the open: move to cover and check whether the Killer is likely to revisit.
  • Spending pallets too early: preserve useful resources, but do not hold one when using it is the only way to avoid an immediate hit.
  • Ignoring the trial state: a safe hiding decision early may be wasteful when the team urgently needs a Generator or rescue late in the trial.

How to play Killer: a complete beginner loop

1. Patrol likely Generator areas

Your first job is to locate Survivors and interrupt progress. Move through areas where Generators are available, using sound, visual information and completed objectives to narrow the search. A completed Generator is not merely a loss; it also tells you where Survivors are less likely to remain and which parts of the map deserve attention next.

Do not spend the opening indefinitely searching one empty corner. A patrol is valuable because it gives you information across several areas. If you find no one, rotate to the next likely Generator rather than repeatedly checking the same location without new evidence.

2. Choose chases you can finish efficiently

Once you find a Survivor, assess the route. Commit when the path is favorable and you can reasonably force a down; leave when the chase is consuming too much time while other Survivors repair. This is the central Killer trade-off: winning one pursuit is useful, but not if the other three players complete multiple objectives without interruption.

Use the environment to shape the chase. Survivors want to connect cover, windows and pallets. Approach routes that reduce their options, avoid following a long loop with no progress and change targets when another Survivor becomes easier to pressure. The goal is not to chase the same player out of frustration; it is to create a sequence of decisions that keeps the whole team under pressure.

3. Down and Hook, then convert pressure

After a down, Hook the Survivor and use the resulting pressure to search, interrupt repairs and force mistakes. The Hook location gives you information about where at least one Survivor may need to travel, but standing there permanently can surrender the rest of the map. Leave when the situation allows and patrol the objectives that matter.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Look for signs that a rescue or repair is underway. If you find another Survivor, decide whether that new chase is more valuable than returning to the Hook. If no one is visible, continue checking likely Generator areas rather than waiting passively.

4. Protect Generator pressure without abandoning the loop

The Killer’s repeating loop is find, chase, down, Hook and repeat, while preventing Survivors from repairing freely. Every decision should support that loop. A long chase that produces no down is a warning to change route or target. A Hook followed by no patrol gives Survivors time to repair. A patrol that never becomes a chase gives Survivors time as well.

Use completed objectives and interrupted repairs to update your plan. You do not need to control every area simultaneously; you need to make the most important areas costly to enter and keep converting information into downs and Hooks.

5. Learn your Killer’s power after the fundamentals

Each Killer has a distinct power, but beginners benefit from first learning movement, pursuit and Hook flow. Once you can find Survivors, evaluate a chase and leave an unproductive route, practice the power in situations where its purpose is clear. Learn what the power changes about search, approach, chase length and map pressure instead of activating it automatically.

Killer mistakes that give Survivors free progress

  • Overcommitting to one chase: leave when the route is long and the other three Survivors are likely repairing.
  • Guarding one Hook without information: patrol useful objectives after the situation permits instead of waiting in place.
  • Ignoring completed Generators: use the changed map state to predict where Survivors must now work.
  • Using a power before understanding its purpose: master basic pursuit first, then connect the power to a specific decision.
  • Searching randomly: prioritize likely Generator areas, sound and visual clues, and any objective progress that reveals Survivor activity.

Survivor versus Killer: which skills transfer?

Skill Survivor perspective Killer perspective How learning both helps
Objective Five Generators must be completed before the Exit Gates can be powered. Prevent uninterrupted Generator progress while pursuing Hooks. You learn when repairing is safe and when a Killer must leave a chase.
Information Read the trial state, teammate activity and danger around your position. Use sound, visual information and completed objectives to find targets. You become better at predicting what the other side can reasonably know.
Chase skill Connect cover, windows and pallets to extend survival time. Cut off routes, choose favorable engagements and abandon poor ones. You recognize strong routes and the moments when they stop being efficient.
Map pressure Spread useful work and avoid creating several vulnerable players in one area. Patrol key Generator areas and convert Hooks into interruptions. You understand why a seemingly small rotation can change the entire trial.
Teamwork Coordinate repairs, rescues and healing without duplicating risky actions. Exploit scattered attention and punish predictable rescue or repair patterns. You learn which team behaviors are reliable and which are easy to interrupt.

A first-session plan for new players

Matches one and two: learn the interface and objective

Focus on identifying Generators, reading the trial state and completing the basic action associated with your role. As Survivor, make deliberate trips between repair, cover and a safe route. As Killer, patrol several likely Generator areas and practice the full find–chase–down–Hook sequence without worrying about advanced optimization.

Matches three and four: practice movement under pressure

Survivors should choose a route before the Killer reaches them and practice making one purposeful window or pallet decision. Killers should evaluate whether each chase is favorable and leave at least one unproductive pursuit rather than treating every contact as a commitment.

Match five and beyond: add team and map decisions

Survivors should watch the number of completed Generators and change priorities between repair, rescue and healing. Killers should use completed objectives and Hook pressure to decide where to patrol next. Only after these choices feel understandable should you spend most of your attention on perk combinations or a Killer’s specialized power.

Perks, powers and changing game versions

Perks, Killer powers and balance values are not permanent. Behaviour Interactive’s version 9.5.0 patch notes, dated March 12, 2026, document changes affecting Generator regression and perk behavior. That means an old tutorial can describe an interaction that no longer works exactly the same way.

A 2022 official gameplay update recorded a 90-second Generator repair time and a 2.5% loss when a Generator was kicked. Those figures are historical examples, not current universal advice. Do not build a strategy around them unless you have verified that the same values apply to the version you are playing.

When reading a guide, check three things before copying its exact numbers:

  • Version: identify the patch or date attached to the advice.
  • Scope: determine whether the number describes a base action, a perk effect, a power or a temporary change.
  • Current behavior: confirm the in-game description and the latest official patch notes before relying on it in a serious match.

For your first games, choose clear, easy-to-understand options rather than trying to assemble a complicated build from a guide written for a different patch. A simple setup lets you see whether a decision helped; changing several effects at once makes mistakes harder to diagnose.

How to review a lost trial

Do not reduce a loss to “the Killer was too strong” or “the team did nothing.” Ask one specific question for each phase:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Opening: Did you begin a useful objective, and did you have a route away from danger?
  2. First chase: Did your movement connect cover, windows or pallets, or did you run into open space?
  3. Mid-trial: Was the team repairing, rescuing and healing at appropriate times, or were several players exposed together?
  4. Late trial: Did the Killer abandon a long chase to protect Generator pressure, or did you remain committed after the situation changed?
  5. Final decision: What single action would have created more time or information?

Reviewing one decision is more useful than memorizing a list of “best” moves. The same action can be correct in one trial and wasteful in another because the map state, teammate positions and Killer pressure are different.
