DDR4 vs. DDR5 RAM: Which Is the Better Value for Your Upgrade?

DDR4 is usually the better value when you already own a compatible DDR4 motherboard and processor. You can add a matched 16GB or 32GB kit without replacing the platform. DDR5 is the better choice for a new AM5 or LGA1851 computer, for high-refresh gaming and memory-sensitive workloads, or when you want memory that can move to newer platforms.

The choice starts with compatibility, not the memory kit’s advertised speed. DDR4 and DDR5 use different electrical specifications, signaling and physical keying, so they cannot share a motherboard. A DDR5 upgrade normally requires a DDR5 motherboard and a compatible CPU, and the total cost can be much higher than the price printed on the RAM box.

Why DDR4 and DDR5 cannot be mixed

DDR4 and DDR5 are separate memory standards, not interchangeable speed grades. Kingston describes differences in their electrical specifications, signaling characteristics and physical keying. The notch in the module is positioned differently, and the motherboard’s memory circuitry is designed for one standard.

That means a DDR5 module will not fit a DDR4 socket correctly, and forcing it could damage the module or board. A DDR4 module also cannot be used in a DDR5 socket. There is no BIOS setting or adapter that turns a DDR4 motherboard into a DDR5 motherboard.

Moving from DDR4 to DDR5 therefore means replacing at least the motherboard. The processor must also belong to a platform that supports the new board. Reusing your case, graphics card, storage and power supply may be possible, but those savings should be included in a complete platform calculation.

Which processors and motherboards support each type?

Intel LGA1700: two board families

Intel’s 12th-, 13th- and 14th-generation Core processors can be used with either DDR4 or DDR5, but the motherboard is dedicated to one type. A DDR4 LGA1700 board needs DDR4; a DDR5 LGA1700 board needs DDR5. Check the exact board model rather than assuming that every LGA1700 motherboard accepts both.

This is the main situation in which a new system buyer can choose between generations without changing the CPU family. Compare the complete price of the CPU, motherboard and memory, then account for the upgrade path you want.

Intel LGA1851: DDR5 only

LGA1851 is a DDR5-only platform. DDR4 is not an option, so buying a DDR4 kit for an LGA1851 build creates an immediate compatibility problem.

AMD AM4: DDR4 only

AM4 systems use DDR4. If your AM4 processor and motherboard still meet your needs, a larger or faster matched DDR4 kit is normally the economical upgrade. Switching to DDR5 means moving to a different AMD platform, not simply changing memory.

How much faster is DDR5 for gaming?

The clearest quantified comparison in the available evidence comes from Tom’s Hardware’s 15-game test, published 28 July 2026. The test used Intel LGA1700 processors, identical software conditions, an RTX 5090 and 1080p resolution to expose CPU and memory differences.

  • DDR4 was 9.3% slower than DDR5 with a Core i7-12700K.
  • The deficit reached 14% with a Core i9-14900K.
  • Across the tested processors, the article summarized the average gaming gap as roughly 11% to 14%.
  • Some individual games showed a gap above 20%.

Those results describe that test setup, not every graphics card or game. An RTX 5090 at 1080p is deliberately capable of revealing CPU and memory limits. If you play at a higher resolution with a slower graphics card, the GPU may become the bottleneck and reduce the visible difference. Older games, engine design, background tasks and frame-rate targets also change the result.

For a high-refresh monitor where the CPU is already limiting frame rates, DDR5’s advantage is easier to justify. For a GPU-limited 60Hz system, replacing an otherwise adequate DDR4 platform solely to gain the measured average may deliver less noticeable value.

Everyday work: capacity usually beats generation

Web browsing, office applications and basic streaming generally show a smaller DDR4-versus-DDR5 difference than the controlled gaming test. Kingston’s guidance emphasizes having enough memory, with 16GB or 32GB a more meaningful baseline for ordinary use than choosing the newest standard with too little capacity.

A 32GB DDR4 system can therefore be a better experience than a 16GB DDR5 system when you keep many browser tabs open, use several office applications, or run a light creative workload. Memory pressure causes paging to storage, which can overwhelm the modest generation advantage.

  • 16GB: A practical baseline for office work, browsing and mainstream gaming when applications are moderate.
  • 32GB: A safer choice for current games, heavy multitasking, development tools and content creation.
  • More than 32GB: Consider it for large video projects, virtual machines, data work or other applications that document a higher requirement.

Capacity does not make an incompatible module compatible. Confirm the motherboard standard first, then choose the capacity and a matched kit that the board and CPU can run reliably.

Total cost: compare the platform, not just the kit

Tom’s Hardware reported that a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit cost more than twice as much as a comparable 32GB DDR4-3200 kit when that comparison was published. The exact prices were market snapshots, not permanent rates; region, retailer, promotions and supply can change them quickly.

The larger cost difference appears when you must replace the motherboard and possibly the processor. A DDR5 kit that looks only moderately more expensive can become a much larger investment after adding a new board, cooler requirements and operating-system or assembly costs. Conversely, a new DDR5-only platform may provide enough performance and longevity to justify its initial premium.

Use this calculation before buying:

  1. Price the memory at the same capacity and channel configuration. Compare 32GB with 32GB, normally as two 16GB modules.
  2. Add the exact motherboard required for each memory type.
  3. Add the processor if your current CPU cannot move to the candidate board.
  4. Check whether your cooler, firmware, case and power supply remain suitable.
  5. Compare the resulting total with the cost of a matched DDR4 upgrade that keeps your current platform.

Do not compare a discounted single 16GB module with a 32GB dual-module kit and call the cheaper option a generation advantage. Capacity, number of modules, rated speed, timings and purchase date all affect value.

Latency, speed and power: what the labels do and do not tell you

DDR5 kits commonly advertise higher transfer rates than DDR4 kits, but the printed number is only one part of performance. Real latency depends on both the data rate and the memory timings, while application performance also depends on the CPU’s memory controller, motherboard firmware and workload. Comparing CAS numbers from different generations without considering the complete timing profile can be misleading.

Likewise, there is no single wattage figure that applies to every DDR4 or DDR5 installation. The CPU, motherboard, number of modules, memory voltage settings and workload determine system power. If lower power is a priority, compare measured system-level results for the exact platform rather than assuming a kit label predicts your complete computer’s consumption.

For ordinary users, stable dual-channel operation and sufficient capacity usually matter more than buying an extreme speed rating. A faster-rated kit can often run at a lower setting if the processor or motherboard cannot support its advertised profile; verify the supported speeds in the CPU and motherboard documentation.

Buying checklist

  1. Identify the exact motherboard model. Read the manual or the manufacturer’s memory specification. Do not rely on the socket name alone: LGA1700 boards exist in separate DDR4 and DDR5 versions.
  2. Confirm the CPU platform. Check whether it is AM4, AM5, LGA1700 or LGA1851, and verify the memory speeds officially supported by the processor.
  3. Choose a matched kit. Prefer two modules purchased as one kit for dual-channel operation. Mixing separate kits, even with matching labels, can reduce stability.
  4. Set a realistic capacity. Choose 16GB or 32GB for most general systems, increasing capacity when your applications demonstrably need it.
  5. Check physical clearance. Confirm module height against the CPU cooler and that the board has the required number of free slots.
  6. Update firmware when appropriate. A current motherboard BIOS can improve memory compatibility, but update only by following the board maker’s procedure.
  7. Enable the rated profile carefully. After installation, use the motherboard’s documented memory profile setting if you want the kit’s advertised speed. Test for stability and return to the default setting if errors occur.

Recommendations by upgrade situation

You already own an adequate DDR4 desktop

Buy a matched DDR4 kit and keep the motherboard and CPU. A 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200 desktop RAM kit is a sensible reference point for a system that needs more capacity, provided the board supports that configuration. Confirm the exact board model and supported module density before ordering.

Replacing the whole platform only to obtain DDR5 is difficult to justify for basic use or a GPU-limited gaming computer. Put the money toward capacity, a graphics upgrade or a future platform change unless your processor is also holding back the applications you use.

You are building AM5 or LGA1851

DDR5 is mandatory. A 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-6000 desktop RAM kit is a common target for a new performance-oriented build, but the compatibility warning is immediate: verify that the exact motherboard and CPU support the kit’s capacity, module layout and rated profile before purchase.

Choose DDR5 because the platform requires it and because it leaves a stronger path to later CPU upgrades, not because every application will suddenly run twice as fast.

You are choosing between DDR4 and DDR5 for a new LGA1700 build

Calculate both complete systems. DDR4 may reduce the initial bill, especially when a discounted board and existing memory are available. DDR5 can deliver higher gaming performance in CPU-limited situations and avoids starting a new build on an older memory standard.

If you expect to keep the board through another processor upgrade, the DDR5 version is usually the more forward-looking choice. If the budget is fixed and the savings fund a materially faster CPU or graphics card, DDR4 may produce the better balanced computer.

You play at high refresh rates or create media

Favor DDR5 when the total platform premium fits your budget. The measured LGA1700 gaming gap was about 11% to 14% on average, and some games exceeded 20%, while media encoders and other memory-sensitive applications can also benefit from greater memory throughput. Validate performance for your particular software before treating the benchmark as a guarantee.

You mainly browse, work in office apps and stream

Prioritize a reliable, adequately sized kit. A 32GB DDR4 upgrade can be more valuable than an undersized DDR5 configuration when your current platform is otherwise suitable. DDR5 becomes the practical choice when the new computer’s platform requires it.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by CPU socket alone

The LGA1700 socket does not tell you whether a board uses DDR4 or DDR5. Read the full model name and manual. AM4 and AM5 also represent different memory generations and are not interchangeable.

Assuming faster-rated memory always runs at that speed

The motherboard firmware and CPU memory controller determine what is stable. A kit can downclock to a supported setting, but that may reduce the advertised performance. Check the supported-speed list before paying for an extreme rating.

Mixing unmatched modules

Different capacities, ranks or timing profiles can force conservative settings or cause instability. Replace the existing modules with a matched kit when possible, and test after any change.

Ignoring the graphics bottleneck

The largest DDR5 advantage appears when the processor and memory are limiting frame rate. If the graphics card is already at full load, a platform replacement may produce little visible improvement in the games you play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using a price from another market or date

Memory pricing changes quickly. The reported more-than-two-times DDR5 premium was a publication-time observation for specific 32GB kits, not a universal current price. Recheck local prices and compare complete systems before deciding.

Decision guide

  • Keep your current DDR4 platform when the CPU and motherboard are adequate and you mainly need more capacity.
  • Choose DDR5 for AM5, LGA1851 or any other DDR5-only platform.
  • Compare both LGA1700 versions by total system price when building new on a fixed budget.
  • Favor DDR5 for high-refresh gaming or heavy media work when the platform premium does not require sacrificing a more important component.
  • Favor capacity and stability for everyday use; generation alone is not a substitute for enough memory.

The practical answer is platform-dependent: DDR4 maximizes the value of hardware you already own, while DDR5 offers the stronger forward path and measurable gains in CPU-limited workloads. Start with the motherboard and processor, then choose the generation that fits the complete upgrade cost.
