It is built for 2–4 players and a Dungeon Master, includes guided play, prebuilt characters, maps, tokens and an 11-die polyhedral set, and is designed to get a new table into its first adventure quickly. If you are joining a campaign that already has a Dungeon Master and adventure, start with the 2024 Player’s Handbook instead. If you are only testing the game, use the 2024 Free Rules on D&D Beyond before spending anything.
The right first purchase depends on your role
There is no single list of books every beginner must own. A player, a Dungeon Master (DM), and a whole group starting together have different needs. The fastest way to avoid overspending is to decide which of these situations describes you:

| Situation | Best starting point | Why it fits | Dice and characters |
|---|---|---|---|
| A completely new group with no experienced DM | Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set | Guided play and a contained first experience reduce setup work. | Prebuilt characters and an 11-die set are included. |
| One player joining an established 2024 campaign | 2024 Player’s Handbook | It is the player-facing core rulebook with character options and playing rules. | You make your own character; the table may already supply dice. |
| You want to try D&D before buying a physical product | 2024 Free Rules on D&D Beyond | It provides a substantial sample of classes, subclasses, feats, monsters and spells. | Use digital character tools and any dice available. |
| You are running the campaign | Starter Set or adventure first, then Dungeon Master’s Guide | The adventure gets the table playing; the DMG adds guidance and tools for running it. | Add the Monster Manual when you need a larger creature reference. |
The 2024 rules revision does not change the practical buying order: start with the material that gets your specific table playing, then add reference books as your needs expand.
Path 1: Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set
Who should choose it
Choose this box when nobody at the table has run D&D before, or when the group wants a self-contained first adventure rather than assembling rules, characters, monsters and dice from separate purchases. D&D Beyond describes it as a first step into Dungeons & Dragons and designs it for 2–4 players plus a Dungeon Master. The guided format and ready-made characters let the group learn the basic game loop while playing instead of preparing every detail in advance.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the box solves
- Character creation: prebuilt characters remove the largest early decision for players who do not yet know the 2024 rules.
- Adventure setup: the guided play experience gives the DM a defined starting structure.
- Table materials: maps and tokens support play without requiring a separate battle-map purchase.
- Dice: the official contents article lists 11 polyhedral dice: 1d4, 4d6, 1d8, 1d10, 1d12, 2d20 and one percentile die.
The set is therefore the strongest “one purchase and start” option. It is not a replacement for every core rulebook: players who later want the complete range of character-building information can add the Player’s Handbook, while a DM who continues running games will eventually benefit from the DMG and Monster Manual.
What the 11 dice mean
The notation describes both the shape and quantity. For example, 4d6 means four six-sided dice, 2d20 means two 20-sided dice, and the percentile die is used to generate results from 00 to 90 when paired with a d10. You do not need to memorize the notation to begin; the included set is intended to cover the starter experience.
Path 2: Start with the 2024 Player’s Handbook
When this is the efficient choice
Buy the 2024 Player’s Handbook first when you are joining a table that already has a DM, an adventure and access to the necessary play materials. D&D Beyond identifies this book as the rules reference for playing the game and one of the three core rulebooks. It is the appropriate long-term purchase for a player who wants to understand character creation and progression rather than rely permanently on a prebuilt sheet.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What a new player gets from it
- The rules needed to participate in exploration, social scenes and combat.
- Character options and the information needed to make informed choices as your character develops.
- A stable reference you can consult between sessions instead of asking the DM to explain every option.
You do not need the Dungeon Master’s Guide or Monster Manual merely because you are a player. Those books serve different jobs. Buying all three core books on day one is unnecessary unless you are also taking responsibility for running the campaign.
Check the table’s rules version
Ask the DM whether the campaign uses the 2024 rules revision before creating a character. A table may allow material from an earlier rules printing, use a mixture, or provide its own character-building limits. The 2024 Player’s Handbook is the correct match for a campaign explicitly identified as using the 2024 rules.

Path 3: Try the 2024 Free Rules first
What is included
D&D Beyond’s 2024 Free Rules include 12 base classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters and 333 spells. That is enough to learn the core play loop and build a supported character without immediately purchasing a physical book. D&D Beyond also states that its official toolset allows users to create and maintain six characters for free.
Who benefits most
- Players deciding whether the game suits them before buying a rulebook.
- Groups meeting online or using digital character sheets.
- Experienced players helping newcomers who need only a rules sample for a short trial.
The free rules are a practical test drive, not a promise that every option in the Player’s Handbook is available. If you later want the complete player-facing rules and broader character choices, move to the 2024 Player’s Handbook.
What you still need at the table
Free rules do not automatically provide a group, a DM, an adventure or physical dice. A DM can run a suitable introductory adventure, and the group can use real dice or a digital roller. Decide those logistics before the first meeting so that “free” does not become a stalled session with nobody prepared to run it.
Which core books does a DM need?
Dungeon Master’s Guide
The 2024 Dungeon Master’s Guide is the DM’s main advice and tools reference. Its coverage addresses all three pillars of play: exploration, social interaction and combat. It is useful when you are preparing scenes, adjudicating situations, organizing a campaign or deciding how to structure encounters.
A new DM does not have to buy it before touching the game. The starter set’s guided material can be the first teaching aid. Add the DMG when you want a broader framework than the introductory adventure provides or when you begin creating and managing your own campaign.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

Monster Manual
The 2024 Monster Manual is a DM-facing creature reference in the same core-rulebook catalog. It supplies creature material for encounters and therefore becomes more valuable as the DM runs a wider variety of adventures. A player who is not running encounters does not need it to play a character.
Adventure material
Adventure content is what turns the rules into a session with a beginning, problem and next decision. For a first-time DM, the starter set or another structured adventure should come before building a campaign from scratch. Once the group is comfortable, the DMG and Monster Manual support more independent preparation.
Recommended DM buying order
- Starter Set or adventure: choose the material that gives the group its first playable scenario.
- Dungeon Master’s Guide: add the rules advice and preparation tools you need to run beyond that introduction.
- Monster Manual: add the creature reference when the campaign needs encounters outside the starter material.
- Player’s Handbook: obtain it if you also want a full player-facing reference or are helping players build characters.
How many dice do you actually need?
The minimum for a first session
One complete polyhedral set is enough to begin, especially if you are using Heroes of the Borderlands. Its listed contents are:
| Die | Quantity in the starter set | Typical notation |
|---|---|---|
| Four-sided | 1 | 1d4 |
| Six-sided | 4 | 4d6 |
| Eight-sided | 1 | 1d8 |
| Ten-sided | 1 | 1d10 |
| Twelve-sided | 1 | 1d12 |
| Twenty-sided | 2 | 2d20 |
| Percentile die | 1 | Usually paired with the d10 for percentile results |
That quantity is a practical starter allocation, not a rule that every player must own. The game can be played by passing dice around or by using a digital roller.
When extra sets are worth buying
For a regular in-person group, one personal set per player is a convenience upgrade. It reduces pauses while people wait for a die and lets everyone keep a familiar set with their character sheet. More dice are also useful when a roll calls for several of the same die at once, but they are not a prerequisite for learning the rules.

Choosing a physical set
- Confirm that the set contains the full polyhedral family: d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 and d20.
- Check whether a percentile die is included; some sets include a second d10 instead.
- Choose readable numbering over decorative features that make results difficult to see.
- If several players share a table, different colors make it easier to identify whose dice are being rolled.
Digital-first play with the Starter Set
The Heroes of the Borderlands Digital Adventure Pack is designed for groups using D&D Beyond’s digital tools. The official digital starter guide lists pre-filled digital character sheets, 19 quickplay maps with monster tokens and a digital dice set. This option suits a group that wants to keep character management, maps and rolling in one digital workspace.
Digital and physical versions can differ in price, regional availability and bundle contents, so check the current product listing for your region before purchasing. Do not assume that owning a physical box automatically grants every digital component, or that a digital pack includes physical dice.
What a first-time group should prepare before session one
- Choose a path: select the starter set, the Player’s Handbook or the free rules based on whether the group is new, established or only experimenting.
- Name the DM: one person must be responsible for presenting the situation and adjudicating the rules. The starter set is aimed at a group with a DM, not at a player-only gathering.
- Confirm the rules revision: tell every player whether the table is using the 2024 rules so character choices and terminology match.
- Assign characters: use the starter set’s prebuilt characters for the quickest start, or create characters with the free rules or Player’s Handbook.
- Set up rolling: distribute the included dice, ask players to bring their own polyhedral sets, or agree on a digital roller.
- Lay out the play area: place the starter maps and tokens, or open the digital maps if the group is playing online.
- Explain the table’s basics: decide how players signal actions, how the DM handles questions and whether phones or digital tools are allowed during play.
This preparation is intentionally small. The point of a starter product is to move the group from purchase to a first decision at the table without requiring a campaign’s worth of planning.

Buying all three core books before choosing a role
The Player’s Handbook, Dungeon Master’s Guide and Monster Manual are complementary, but they are not three mandatory entry tickets. A player needs the first book for complete player-facing rules; the DM benefits from the latter two as the campaign grows. Decide who is running the game before buying a shelf of references.
Recommended Free Tools
Assuming the Monster Manual is a player requirement
It is a creature reference for the person preparing encounters. If you are joining a campaign as a player, spend your first budget on the Player’s Handbook or use the free rules instead.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Buying extra dice before arranging a DM and adventure
Dice are visible and inexpensive-looking accessories, but they cannot replace an adventure or someone willing to run the session. One complete set supports a first game; sort out the group’s roles and scenario first.
Expecting the free rules to contain every option
The 2024 Free Rules are broad enough for a trial, with 12 classes, 12 subclasses, 16 feats, 48 monsters and 333 spells, but they are still a defined subset of the full Player’s Handbook. Treat them as a low-risk starting point rather than an exact substitute for the complete book.
Mixing physical and digital assumptions
A digital adventure pack can include digital sheets, maps, tokens and dice without including a physical box or physical polyhedral set. Conversely, a physical starter box may not provide every digital entitlement. Read the current listing for the edition and region you are buying.

| Priority | Recommended choice | Main advantage | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fastest route to a first adventure | Heroes of the Borderlands Starter Set | Guided play, prebuilt characters, maps, tokens and dice are brought together. | It is an introduction rather than the complete long-term library. |
| Best long-term player reference | 2024 Player’s Handbook | Complete player-facing rules and character information in one core book. | You still need a DM and adventure. |
| Lowest-risk trial | 2024 Free Rules | No physical rulebook purchase is required to begin learning and building characters. | The available options are a subset of the full handbook. |
| Best foundation for a continuing DM | Starter Set or adventure, followed by DMG | Play immediately, then add tools for preparation and campaign management. | The DM must learn to apply the rules and organize the table. |
| Best for expanding encounter variety | Monster Manual after the initial adventure | A dedicated creature reference supports broader encounter preparation. | It has little value to a player who is not running encounters. |
What to buy later
Wait until the group has played enough to identify its actual bottleneck. If players are asking for more character choices or need a permanent rules reference, add the 2024 Player’s Handbook. If the DM is spending more time inventing procedures and adjudicating unusual situations, add the Dungeon Master’s Guide. If encounters are becoming repetitive or the campaign is moving beyond the starter material, add the Monster Manual. If the only problem is passing dice, buy additional polyhedral sets rather than another rulebook.
The design goal behind the starter approach
Justice Ramin Arman, Managing Game Designer, summarized the product’s purpose as follows: “Overall, we aimed to build a smooth onboarding ramp—a true Starter Set—tuned for the 2024 rules revision.” That explains why the starter box is the sensible default for a group with no established collection: its value is not just the number of components, but the reduction in decisions between opening the box and playing.
