It launched as part of the DC All In initiative, which also refreshed the core line. The main universe keeps its accumulated history and legacy relationships; Absolute retells familiar heroes in a separate setting where their origins, resources and formative circumstances can be radically different.
The two settings are designed to coexist inside a larger DC story. You can read an Absolute title on its own, begin with the All In Special for the broad framework, or read the preceding Absolute Power event if you want the transition context.

What is the Absolute Universe?
The Absolute Universe is DC’s new alternate setting for recognizable characters including Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman. DC introduced it alongside an updated main line through the DC All In initiative. That publishing plan gives readers two simultaneous approaches to superhero stories rather than asking them to abandon the established continuity.

A separate setting within DC All In
The All In Special establishes the relationship between the two universes. The core DC line continues with its existing history and refreshed directions, while the Absolute line rebuilds characters in a different reality. “Separate” therefore describes continuity, not ownership or publication: both are DC stories released under the same initiative.

Connected, but not one shared timeline
DC describes the universes as coexisting in a wider narrative and links them to a larger prophecy. Scott Snyder, co-writer of the All In Special and writer of Absolute Batman, summarized the creative goal in DC’s October 11, 2024 interview, saying: “We wanted to show that the DC Universe now has these two approaches to superheroes.” Snyder also said there is room for both approaches to develop before a crossover, rather than forcing an immediate meeting that would overwhelm either line.

The key distinction is not simply visual redesign. Absolute changes the conditions that produced each hero. A familiar symbol may remain, but the path to becoming that symbol can be harsher, stranger or less supported by institutions and family.
How Absolute changes the heroes
Absolute Batman: a hero without the usual safety net
DC’s launch description removes three defining advantages from the Absolute version of Bruce Wayne: he does not have the core-line Batman’s money, mansion or butler. That premise changes how he operates. Equipment, information, transport and recovery cannot be assumed to come from a private fortune and a staffed headquarters.
This does not establish that Absolute Batman lacks training, intelligence, allies or every familiar skill. It establishes a different resource model. His methods and relationships must be understood from the Absolute stories themselves rather than imported from the main continuity.
Absolute Wonder Woman: no island paradise or sisterhood
DC presents Absolute Wonder Woman as a Diana who does not have the island paradise or sisterhood associated with her familiar upbringing. Those omissions alter the foundations of her identity: she is not formed by the same protected community, traditions or support network as the core version.
The change is about origin and circumstances, not a promise that every personality trait, power or relationship will be identical to or opposite from the main Diana. Readers should treat the launch premise as the starting condition for this continuity.

Absolute Superman: Krypton is part of his childhood
DC’s description says Absolute Superman grew up on Krypton before coming to Earth. That reverses a major assumption many readers bring to the traditional Superman origin, in which his time on Krypton is brief and his formative life is primarily human.
Growing up on Krypton gives the Absolute version a different cultural and emotional baseline before he reaches Earth. It also means that comparisons with the core Superman should account for upbringing, not just costume, powers or the fact that both characters become protectors.
Other characters are also reimagined
DC’s editorial material identifies alternate versions of characters such as the Flash, Green Lantern and Martian Manhunter in the Absolute setting. The reviewed launch information does not establish their specific origins, powers or supporting casts, so those details should be taken from the individual series rather than assumed from the core versions.
Why the change in circumstances matters
Removing inherited advantages lets the line ask different questions about heroism. In the main universe, a character’s history can provide allies, institutions, technology, family connections and decades of consequences. Absolute stories can withhold or replace those supports, making the hero’s decisions operate under different pressures.
- Resources: A hero may need to build tools, networks or safe spaces instead of receiving them from an established estate, organization or community.
- Origins: A revised childhood or homeland changes what the character knows, values and fears before the familiar heroic identity appears.
- Relationships: Removing a traditional family or society creates room for new allies and conflicts without erasing the core-line versions.
- Expectations: Readers cannot reliably predict a plot from the character’s mainstream biography. The name is familiar; the circumstances are not.
That is why calling Absolute “just a costume change” misses the point. The line uses recognizable icons as anchors while changing the conditions that normally explain their behavior.

Is Absolute DC separate from the main DC Universe?
Yes, in continuity terms. Absolute titles take place in a distinct universe, so events in one line should not be treated as ordinary chapters of the other. The main line’s Batman is not replaced by Absolute Batman, and Absolute Wonder Woman is not a new status quo for the core Diana.

They are nevertheless connected at the publishing and story levels. Both lines launched through DC All In, the All In Special frames their relationship, and DC describes a wider narrative in which the universes coexist. That connection leaves room for a future intersection while preserving the independence of each line’s early stories.
What “connected” does not mean
- It does not mean every issue requires a parallel issue from the other universe.
- It does not mean a character’s core continuity biography automatically applies in Absolute stories.
- It does not mean Absolute is a temporary replacement for the regular DC line.
- It does not guarantee that every supporting character, event or power works the same way in both settings.
Where should you start reading Absolute DC?
DC presents the launch titles as jumping-on points, so there is no requirement to read years of back issues first. Choose the route that matches how much context you want.
Character-first route
Start with the first issue or available collected edition of Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman or Absolute Superman. Pick by premise rather than by a supposed universal reading order:
- Choose a character. Batman offers a resource-constrained vigilante; Wonder Woman begins without the familiar island and sisterhood; Superman grows up on Krypton before arriving on Earth.
- Read that series from its first available issue or volume. Each launch title is designed to establish its own version of the character.
- Add the All In Special if you want the cross-universe framework. It explains why the two lines exist together without requiring you to sample every core title.
Issue numbers, volume names and availability can change, so check DC’s current listings before buying a specific edition.
Context-first route with Absolute Power
Absolute Power is the event that precedes All In. DC’s collected edition combines Absolute Power #1–4 with Absolute Power: Ground Zero. The listed edition is a 170-page, Teen-rated physical graphic novel with an on-sale date of February 4, 2025.
Read it if you want the transition into All In and the event background before starting an Absolute series. It is useful context, not a mandatory purchase: DC simultaneously markets the new Absolute titles as entry points for readers who begin with a character.

Price, stock and edition details are time-sensitive. Confirm them in the current DC catalog or your chosen bookseller rather than relying on the original release listing.
Digital route
DC points digital readers to DC Universe Infinite. Catalog coverage, regional access and subscription terms can change, so verify that the issues or collections you want are currently available in your country before subscribing.
A practical reading plan
These sequences avoid unnecessary buy-in while preserving optional context.
Minimum commitment
- Pick one of the three core launch series.
- Read its first issue or collection.
- Continue only if that version of the hero works for you.
Balanced context
- Read the All In Special.
- Start one Absolute launch title.
- Sample a core All In title featuring the corresponding mainstream hero if you want a direct thematic contrast.
Full transition context
- Read the Absolute Power collected edition.
- Read the All In Special.
- Begin Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman or Absolute Superman.
- Add other Absolute series as their premises appeal to you.
The third route gives the most background, but the first route is the fastest way to discover whether the line’s reinterpretations suit your tastes.

Established by DC’s launch material

Not established by the available launch descriptions
- A complete biography for every Absolute hero.
- The exact identities of every ally, villain or supporting character in each series.
- A fixed crossover date or mandatory reading order for future intersections.
- Independent sales totals, readership figures or market-share statistics.
- Current issue schedules, inventory, digital catalog terms or subscription pricing.
Keeping those limits in mind prevents a common mistake: treating one character’s radical redesign as a rule that every Absolute hero must follow in the same way.

DC announced on November 18, 2024 that Absolute Batman #1 was “2024’s Bestselling Comic Book!” and noted additional printings. That is a claim made by DC; the announcement did not provide a sales count or identify an independent ranking dataset. It should therefore be read as the publisher’s stated sales result, not as an independently verified market statistic.

The announcement demonstrates strong publisher-reported demand for the launch, but it does not establish comparative readership for every Absolute title or prove that one universe is universally preferred. The meaningful choice for a reader remains the premise and continuity they want to follow.
Common misconceptions to avoid
“Absolute replaced the regular DC Universe.”
It did not. DC launched an updated core line and the Absolute line together. The main continuity remains an active part of All In.
“Absolute versions are weaker because they have fewer advantages.”
Fewer inherited resources describe the circumstances, not a simple power ranking. The launch information does not support declaring any Absolute hero universally weaker or stronger than the core counterpart.
“I must read every recent DC event first.”
The All In launch is explicitly framed as a jumping-on point. Absolute Power adds context, but it is optional for readers who start with an Absolute character series.
“Every familiar detail carries over unless DC says otherwise.”
The opposite is safer. Use the individual Absolute series to learn its version of a character. Only the specific launch premises established by DC should be treated as confirmed across the line.
Which universe is right for you?
Choose the main DC Universe if you want the accumulated legacy of familiar versions, long-running relationships and continuity built across the regular line. Choose the Absolute Universe if you want recognizable heroes rebuilt around altered origins, missing institutions and more disruptive starting conditions.
You do not have to choose permanently. Because the settings are parallel, reading an Absolute title does not require abandoning the core line, and following the core line does not require treating Absolute as its replacement. Their purpose is to offer two different ways into DC superhero storytelling at the same time.
