For a newcomer who wants one clear starting lane, the current DCU is probably easier to begin. For someone who wants a mapped watchlist spanning a large shared universe, the MCU is easier to navigate. That is a practical judgment based on where each offers a starting point and how its viewing paths are organized—not a measured score of audience difficulty. The key is to compare the new DCU with the MCU, not to treat every DC film as one continuity.
At a glance: the best choice depends on what you want to watch
| What matters most | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A bounded place to start now | Current DCU | DC identifies the 2025 Superman as an introduction to the new DCU, while older DC screen stories belong to separate continuities. DC’s Superman guide |
| A watch order across a large shared catalog | MCU | A current guide lays out both chronological and release-date orders for MCU films, Disney+ series, and special presentations. Rotten Tomatoes’ MCU guide |
| Watching everything under the brand | Neither is a simple single list | DC includes multiple separate screen continuities; the MCU guide itself spans films and television as well as specials. |
Why DC can be easier to start—but only if you choose a lane
“DC” is not one continuous viewing history. The Donnerverse, the DCEU, the newer DCU, and standalone or Elseworlds films are distinct lanes. Mixing them into one required watchlist makes the task seem more complicated than it needs to be.

Start with the new DCU’s Superman
DC’s April 2025 guide distinguishes Henry Cavill’s Superman in the DCEU from David Corenswet’s Superman in the new DCU, and presents Superman (2025) as a possible introduction to the character and wider DC Universe. A newcomer can begin there without watching older Superman films first. DC’s guide to Superman’s live-action films
Keep other DC stories outside that starting lane
In its January 2023 announcement, DC described an approach that separates connected DCU projects from other stories, naming Joker and The Batman sequel as outside the shared continuity. DC Studios co-chairman Peter Safran said, “The DCU’s a multiverse, but we’re going to be focusing on one universe from that multiverse,” and added, “And if something isn’t DCU, we’re going to make that very clear.” Those statements describe the studio’s announced approach at the time; they are not a guarantee that every future boundary will remain unchanged. #1 Best Overall
This makes the current DCU a relatively contained entry point, not proof that the entire DC catalog is simple. If you choose a different lane, follow a guide scoped to that continuity rather than assuming it connects to the new DCU.
Why the MCU is easier to map as a watchlist
The MCU has a clearer unified viewing map for people who want to follow its shared story across formats. Rotten Tomatoes’ MCU guide, updated September 21, 2026, offers both chronological and release-date orders and covers films, Disney+ shows, and special presentations. See the MCU order guide

Choose between release order and chronological order
Release order follows how audiences first encountered the theatrical MCU: Iron Man launched it in theaters in 2008. Chronological order instead follows when stories are set; in the guide, Captain America: The First Avenger comes earliest in the MCU timeline. The two orders answer different questions, so there is no need to treat one as universally correct.
- Choose release order if you want the franchise’s original introduction and want reveals to arrive in the order they were released.
- Choose chronological order if you prefer events arranged by in-universe time.
- Choose a narrower scope if you only want films or a particular part of the franchise; the full guide’s inclusion of shows and specials is useful for completionists, but expands the list.
What if you want to watch the older DCEU?
The DCEU has its own chronology; it is not the new DCU’s viewing order. Rotten Tomatoes’ DCEU guide, updated June 25, 2026, starts with Wonder Woman (set in 1918), followed by Wonder Woman 1984, and says the remaining chronology largely follows release order. It also describes Zack Snyder’s Justice League as an optional, non-canon alternative to Justice League. Rotten Tomatoes’ DCEU chronology guide
Rank #3
That is a useful route if the DCEU is the specific experience you want. It does not turn the DCEU into a required prelude to the new DCU, nor does it make every DC film part of that chronology.
A practical way to decide
- Pick the scope first. For a fresh, bounded DC starting point, begin with the new DCU’s Superman (2025). For a broad shared-universe project, choose the MCU.
- Decide whether order matters to you. If following a sequence matters, choose either MCU release order or chronological order and stick to that guide. If it does not, start with the entry point for the specific continuity you chose.
- Do not combine separate DC continuities into one checklist. Use a DCEU guide for the DCEU, and treat the newer DCU as its own lane.
- Set a stopping point. You do not have to watch every series, special, or older film to begin enjoying one chosen continuity.
Which franchise is easier overall?
The current DCU is easier to start if you want one bounded lane and a clear entry point. The MCU is easier to map if you want a large shared-universe watchlist with explicit chronological and release-order options. Neither verdict applies to every film released under the DC or Marvel names, and there is no cited audience study that quantifies which franchise is objectively easier.
