Start on an Official server if you are new to DayZ and want to learn the unmodified game with the fewest unknowns. Choose a Community server when you specifically want active administration, a whitelist, role-play rules, altered loot, a first-person-only environment, or PC mods. The decisive issue is not the label alone: check the server’s hive or shard, perspective, access rules, platform, BattlEye setting, population and current rules before you commit a character.
Official and Community servers are separate experiences. Official servers are operated by Bohemia Interactive and provide the vanilla reference environment. Community servers are run or rented by players and can change rules, access and configuration. Progress does not automatically follow you between every server, so treat a new listing as a possible new character destination until its persistence relationship is clear.

The short answer: which server type fits you?
Use the following decision rule:
- Pick Official for your first hours, unmodified survival mechanics, a common baseline for guides and friends, and no server-specific mod setup.
- Pick Community for named administrators, curated populations, role-play, private access, custom loot or building rules, or modded content on PC.
- Stay on the same hive or shard when preserving a character matters. A server switch is not automatically a character transfer.

There is no authoritative, current comparison of total population, uptime or ban rates that applies to every Official and Community server. Queues, maintenance and administrator responsiveness vary by individual listing, so inspect the live browser information rather than choosing from a universal ranking.
What an Official DayZ server is
Bohemia Interactive defines Official servers as servers it operates and that run the vanilla DayZ experience. The Official and Community tabs were separated so the developer-operated experience could be distinguished from user-rented servers. Bohemia’s 0.62 announcement described the reason for the split as wanting to see the official experience and the community experience separately over the long term.

That separation gives Official servers a useful reference value. Loot balance, stamina, building, combat and survival systems are presented without a community owner changing the rules for a particular shard. When a guide, video or friend says an item normally spawns in a certain way, an Official server is the closest common baseline, although patches and platform differences can still change details.
Why beginners often benefit from Official first
- You learn the mechanics that apply to the vanilla game instead of learning a server’s custom exceptions.
- You do not need to identify, download or troubleshoot a mod collection before spawning.
- You can compare your experience with the developer-intended balance used by the main server category.
- You avoid confusing a private rule set with a universal DayZ rule.
Official does not mean every server has identical queue times, performance or player behavior. It also does not mean a character can move freely among all Official listings; persistence still follows the official database context and the particular server relationship shown in the browser.
What a Community DayZ server is
A Community server is operated or rented by a player, group or hosting customer rather than by Bohemia Interactive. The owner can publish rules and configure access, perspective, voice options, signature verification and other server settings. On PC, Community servers are the main route to substantial content mods. On Xbox and PlayStation, the practical difference is usually private-server configuration, because console servers do not offer the same PC-style mod ecosystem.

What owners can change
- Access: public entry, a password or a whitelist that requires approval.
- Perspective: first-person-only, third-person-enabled, or a rule that changes between modes.
- Gameplay: loot quantities, player-versus-player expectations, stamina, base-building limits, role-play requirements and other configuration choices.
- Community conduct: voice rules, safe-zone policies, raid windows, language standards and escalation procedures.
- Content: PC mod collections that add items, maps, systems or quality-of-life changes.
The Community label alone is not a quality guarantee. A well-run server may have visible administrators, clear rules and a stable population; another may have outdated information or little moderation. Read the current description and find the staff’s rule and contact channels before investing time in a long-term base.
Persistence: will your character come with you?
Do not assume that a character transfers between every server. Bohemia’s documented model distinguishes the Official hive from Community private shards. A hive or shard is the persistence context that stores character and world data for a related group of servers. Moving within that context can preserve a character, while moving to a different context can present a fresh survivor.
How to check before switching
- Open the target server’s full browser entry, not just its short name.
- Look for wording that identifies an Official hive or a named Community shard.
- Read the description for statements about shared progression, linked servers or a separate database.
- Check whether the target is on the same platform and uses the same perspective and rule family.
- If the relationship is unclear, ask the server administrators before leaving a valuable character or gear cache.
A server name that looks similar is not proof of shared persistence. Treat a move to an unrelated Community listing as a new-character decision unless the owner explicitly documents a shared shard.

How to choose your first server
Choose Official when your priority is learning
Official is the safer starting point if you are still learning infection, bleeding, temperature, food, water, navigation, inventory and combat. The absence of server-specific mods reduces the number of variables when you troubleshoot a death or an unfamiliar item. It also makes advice from general DayZ resources easier to apply.
Choose Community when you already know the experience you want
Community is a better first choice when you dislike open public access, want staff to enforce conduct, need a role-play framework, prefer a curated population or want altered progression. PC players who specifically want new maps or item systems generally need a Community server because that is where substantial mods are hosted.
Warning signs for either category
- The listing has no readable rules or no way to contact administrators.
- The displayed name promises one perspective or rule set while the description says another.
- The server requires a password or whitelist but does not explain how approval works.
- Players report a queue or maintenance state that the listing does not explain.
- The description does not identify whether a character belongs to a shared hive or a separate shard.
1PP and 3PP: the perspective choice
1PP means first-person perspective: you see through the survivor’s eyes. It limits information to what the character could directly see and is often chosen by players who want tighter, more tactical encounters. A first-person-only server may state 1PP in its name or rules.
3PP means third-person perspective: the camera can be placed behind the survivor. This gives a wider view around the character and can make movement, clothing and base work easier to observe. It also changes how players gather information near cover, so a 3PP fight does not play exactly like a 1PP fight.

Perspective is a server rule, not merely a personal camera preference. Confirm it before joining, especially if you are moving between servers; your muscle memory and expectations around cover and scouting will change.
Public, passworded and whitelisted access
Public
A public server lets anyone who meets the platform and version requirements attempt to join. It is the simplest route for a new player and usually gives the largest potential pool, but you have less control over who shares the shard.
Passworded
A passworded server requires a shared credential supplied by the owner or community. Ask how the password is distributed and whether it changes. Do not assume that knowing the password also grants permission to build, raid or use every area; those are separate rules.

Whitelisted
A whitelist requires the staff to approve your account before you can enter. Applications may ask for a platform identifier, age confirmation, role-play background or agreement to the rule set. Whitelisting can produce a more curated population, but approval times and standards are controlled by that server’s staff.

On PC, a Community server may require a collection of mods. The launcher or server browser can indicate missing or mismatched content, and the server may refuse a connection until the required versions are installed. Keep enough storage for the collection, allow updates to finish and read the owner’s installation instructions rather than mixing files from unrelated servers.
Some Community settings refer to signature verification. This is a server-side security setting that checks whether client files meet the expected signatures; it is separate from whether the owner actively moderates players. A server can be heavily modded and well administered, lightly modified and poorly moderated, or vanilla with strict rules.
Console players should set expectations differently. The relevant Community variation is generally private-server configuration—access, rules, perspective and tuning—rather than the broad PC mod catalog. A console listing that advertises custom settings is not automatically offering downloadable content mods.
BattlEye is not the same as community moderation
BattlEye is an anti-cheat protection setting displayed in the server browser. Bohemia documents a browser filter named BattlEye required; changing it to No allows the game to show and join servers that are not protected by BattlEye. That filter tells you about a technical protection layer, not about the quality of the administrator team.

Community moderation is the human side: reviewing reports, enforcing rules, handling appeals and removing disruptive players. A whitelisted server may have active staff, while another Community server may have little oversight. Check both the BattlEye status and the owner’s published moderation process. Never treat one as proof of the other.
PC, Xbox and PlayStation: what changes?
PC
PC offers the broadest Community-server variety, including substantial modded experiences. You must verify the required mod collection, game version compatibility, signature requirements and any launcher instructions. Official remains the straightforward vanilla path when you do not want that maintenance.

Xbox and PlayStation
Console players usually encounter differences through private-server settings, access controls and rule changes rather than PC-style content mods. Bohemia’s private-console-server FAQ identifies Nitrado as the partner used to rent and administer private DayZ servers on Xbox and PlayStation. Availability, regional options and current terms can change, so consult the current hosting and server documentation before making a purchase or promising a feature.
On every platform, check the live listing for population, queue and maintenance information. A server that is ideal for a friend in one region may be inconvenient for you if its active hours or network location produce a persistent queue.

Use this sequence whenever you evaluate a candidate:
- Choose the category: start in the Official tab for vanilla play or the Community tab for owner-defined rules.
- Read the complete name and description: identify 1PP or 3PP, role-play or PvP expectations, access requirements and any mod notice.
- Confirm the platform and version: do not infer console compatibility from a PC-looking name.
- Check BattlEye: note whether protection is enabled and keep the browser filter consistent with your preference.
- Inspect population and queue: compare current players and queue length at the hours you normally play.
- Find the rules: look for raid, base, voice, language, combat-logging and appeal procedures.
- Verify persistence: determine whether the server is in the Official hive or a named Community shard, and whether related servers share it.
- Check maintenance information: an owner’s status channel or listing note is more useful than an old recommendation.
- Join a low-risk session: spend your first life testing latency, perspective, loot balance and staff responsiveness before building a permanent base.
Joining an Official server step by step
- Open DayZ’s server browser and select the Official tab.
- Set the platform, region and perspective filters you prefer.
- Leave BattlEye required enabled unless you have a specific reason to view unprotected servers.
- Sort by a manageable queue and read the server entry for maintenance or restart notes.
- Join and use the first life to learn the baseline systems rather than carrying assumptions from a customized server.
If you later select another Official listing, recheck the hive relationship. The Official label identifies the operator and vanilla intent; it is not a promise that every listing shares one character database.

- Open the Community tab and narrow the list by platform, perspective and BattlEye preference.
- Read the server description and locate the owner’s complete rules before connecting.
- Determine whether the server is public, passworded or whitelisted, then follow the stated access process.
- On PC, install only the required mod collection from the server’s documented source and wait for all updates to complete.
- Record the shard name, perspective and important rules in your own notes so you can identify the server later.
- Join with minimal equipment, test voice and latency, and confirm that the observed rules match the description.
- Ask an administrator about persistence before transferring a valuable character from another server.
Switching servers without losing the wrong character
Before you leave a server, record its exact name, platform, perspective and shard or hive information. Store valuable items safely, log out according to the server’s rules and avoid assuming that a similarly named destination is linked. When the target is a separate private shard, expect a separate survivor and world state.
If a character appears unexpectedly fresh, do not keep reconnecting at random. Return to the original listing, verify the original hive or shard, and check whether the target owner documents shared persistence. If the character is important, contact administrators with the exact server names and the time of the switch; avoid posting account credentials or other private information.
Troubleshooting common problems
The server does not appear
- Clear restrictive filters, including perspective, password status and BattlEye requirement.
- Confirm that you are browsing the correct Official or Community tab.
- Check platform and game-version compatibility.
- Look for maintenance notes or a changed server name.
You are rejected for missing or mismatched mods
On PC, compare your installed collection with the owner’s current list, let the launcher finish updating, remove obsolete copies and restart the game. Do not combine files from several servers unless the owner explicitly says they are compatible.

You are kicked despite joining successfully
Read the kick message and the server rules. Common causes include an unapproved whitelist account, an incorrect password, signature verification failure, a missing mod or a rule violation. Contact the named staff channel with the exact message rather than repeatedly reconnecting.
Your old character is missing
First verify the hive or shard. A fresh survivor on a different Community shard is expected behavior, not necessarily data loss. Rejoin the original listing and check its persistence notes before assuming the account or character is damaged.
The server feels empty or unstable
Population and uptime are properties of an individual server, not of the Official or Community label. Check the live queue, restart schedule and recent administrator notices. If performance remains unsuitable, choose another listing while preserving the original shard information for your character.
Rules, donations and monetization
Bohemia’s support material says DayZ monetization is constrained by the game’s EULA, with limited exceptions and a dedicated monetization process. A Community owner may describe donations, memberships or access procedures, but you should read the current server rules and Bohemia’s policy before paying. Do not assume that a contribution buys in-game advantages, bypasses a whitelist or guarantees uptime.
Ask what a payment actually provides, whether it is recurring, how refunds are handled and whether the benefit is cosmetic, administrative or gameplay-related. If the description is vague about paid access or advantages, choose a server with clearer terms.

Bottom line
Official is the dependable starting point for learning DayZ as Bohemia ships it. Community is the better destination when a specific server’s rules, staff, perspective, access model or PC mod set solves a problem you actually have. Compare the individual listing—not just the tab—and confirm the hive or shard before moving a character.
