Most of Europe and the United Kingdom will move clocks back on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Most of the United States and Canadian locations that still observe seasonal clock changes will make the switch on Sunday, November 1, 2026. In the U.S. and observing parts of Canada, 2:00 a.m. daylight time becomes 1:00 a.m. standard time, so the 1 a.m. hour happens twice.
When do the clocks go back in 2026?
The date depends on where you live. Europe changes one week before North America, which is why calendars may show either October 25 or November 1.

| Region | 2026 change date | Local transition | Standard-time label | Important exceptions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Most of Europe | Sunday, October 25 | Summer time changes to standard time | Central European locations move from CEST (UTC+2) to CET (UTC+1) | Rules can differ by country or territory; verify the local calendar |
| United Kingdom | Sunday, October 25 | Clocks move back one hour | British Summer Time returns to standard time | Check local device and calendar settings for overseas territories |
| Most U.S. locations | Sunday, November 1 | 2:00 a.m. daylight time becomes 1:00 a.m. standard time | EDT changes to EST in the Eastern time zone, with equivalent changes in other zones | Hawaii, most of Arizona and U.S. territories do not follow the standard transition |
| Canadian locations observing seasonal time | Sunday, November 1 | Local daylight time moves back one hour to standard time | Depends on the province or territory | Some jurisdictions have different or changing rules |
The U.S. Naval Observatory identifies November 1, 2026, as the end of daylight saving time and says the shift begins at “0200 local time on the date of the change.”

You gain one hour overnight when daylight saving time ends. Turning the clock from 2:00 back to 1:00 repeats the 1 a.m. hour, giving that night 25 clock hours instead of 24. The trade-off is earlier sunsets and less evening daylight after the change.

What exactly happens at the transition?
United States
In most U.S. locations, the sequence is 12:59 a.m. daylight time, followed by 1:00 a.m. daylight time. At 2:00 a.m., clocks reset to 1:00 a.m. standard time, and the 1 o’clock hour runs again. Phones, computers and connected clocks normally update automatically when their time-zone and automatic-date settings are correct.
Europe
Under the current European schedule, Central European locations move from CEST (UTC+2) to CET (UTC+1) on October 25. Other European countries make an equivalent one-hour move according to their own time zone. The exact local clock reading and abbreviations vary, so travelers should use the city’s time-zone rule rather than assume every European location changes identically.

Canada
Canadian locations that continue seasonal changes switch on November 1. Because provincial and territorial rules are not uniform and can change, the correct date for a particular city should be checked with its local time authority or a current device time-zone database.

Which places do not change clocks?
Do not apply the November 1 U.S. rule automatically to every American location. Hawaii, most of Arizona and U.S. territories generally remain on the same clock schedule year-round. Canada also has jurisdictions that do not make the standard seasonal transition. When coordinating a call, flight or deadline, check the city rather than relying only on the country.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about proposals to change the U.S. system?
U.S. policy proposals have been reported that would make daylight time permanent. They do not alter the currently scheduled 2026 calendar: the operative date for most U.S. locations remains November 1. A future law could change later years, so recurring appointments should continue to use an up-to-date time-zone database.

How to avoid missed appointments
- Confirm the destination city and its time-zone identifier, not just its country.
- Leave automatic date, time and time-zone updates enabled on phones and computers.
- Check calendars, alarms, servers and recording equipment that may use a manually selected time zone.
- For cross-Atlantic meetings, remember that Europe changes on October 25 while most of North America changes on November 1; the time difference can therefore shift temporarily between those Sundays.
- On the transition night, avoid scheduling critical work during the repeated 1 a.m. hour unless the system records the time-zone offset.
