In brief: DAX, MDAX and SDAX are size-based segments of Germany’s regulated equity market. DAX contains the largest eligible companies, MDAX the next tier of mid-sized companies, and SDAX the smaller companies below MDAX. They are rules-based selection indices, not competing forecasts: membership, sector mix, liquidity and turnover differ, so an index’s label does not by itself predict future returns.
For investors, the practical choice is between large-cap stability and exposure to progressively smaller companies. DAX is the core German large-cap benchmark; MDAX adds mid-cap exposure; SDAX reaches further down the market-capitalization ranking and generally changes constituents more often. The right way to compare them is by portfolio role, diversification, liquidity and tolerance for company-specific volatility—not by assuming that a smaller-company index must outperform.

The three indices at a glance
| Index | Tier | Constituents | Selection position | Investor lens |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DAX | Large cap | 40 | Largest eligible companies | Core German equity benchmark and broad large-cap representation |
| MDAX | Mid cap | 50 | Companies immediately below DAX | Mid-cap exposure; membership can change more often |
| SDAX | Small cap | 70 | Companies immediately below MDAX | Smaller-company exposure; the highest observed turnover tendency of the three |
Deutsche Börse describes DAX as measuring the performance of the 40 largest companies on the German stock market. It represents around 80% of the market capitalization of listed stock corporations in Germany, according to the exchange’s 2026 explainer. MDAX contains the 50 largest companies that follow DAX, while SDAX contains the next 70 companies after MDAX. The tiers are therefore relative: a company can move from one index to another when its eligible free-float market value and other requirements change.

Size is the ranking mechanism, but it is not the only entry condition. Deutsche Börse uses a rules-based process intended to make the selection objective and transparent. Eligible companies are ranked primarily by free-float market capitalization, meaning the value of shares considered available for public trading rather than strategic or tightly held stakes.

Listing and trading requirements
The current eligibility description includes a listing on the regulated market, at least 10% free float, continuous trading on Xetra, minimum liquidity, a minimum trading history, timely financial reporting and corporate-governance requirements. A company that is large enough by market value can still fail to qualify if it does not meet these conditions.
These filters matter because an index-tracking product must be able to trade constituents in a reasonably orderly market. They also explain why index membership is not simply a league table of every German business by headline market capitalization.
Free-float weighting
Constituent weighting is based on free-float market capitalization. A company with a larger publicly tradable value receives more weight than a smaller eligible company, subject to the applicable index rules. This means an index is not an equal-weight basket: the performance of its largest constituents can have a disproportionate effect on the index level.
Different eligibility language for SDAX
Deutsche Börse defines SDAX as 70 Prime Standard companies ranking directly below MDAX by size, with inclusion based on free-float market capitalization. Prime Standard is therefore part of SDAX’s stated selection description, while the broader family rules also cover liquidity, trading history, reporting and governance.

How reviews and index changes work
The index family is reviewed on a scheduled basis, with additional checks designed to capture major ranking changes. A review can promote a company, remove it, or leave the composition unchanged.
DAX review calendar
DAX has regular reviews in March and September. Fast-entry and fast-exit checks run in the remaining quarter-end months. Deutsche Börse announces the result and the effective date, followed by the relevant rebalancing process. The announcement date and the date on which a change becomes effective are not necessarily the same, so investors should check the published timetable when a constituent change matters to a trade or fund rebalance.
SDAX chaining dates and extraordinary events
Deutsche Börse’s glossary notes that SDAX composition can change on each chaining date in March, June, September and December. Extraordinary substitutions can also follow delistings, settlements, bankruptcies or new listings. Similar corporate events can affect the other selection indices under their rules.
Why turnover differs by tier
Deutsche Börse characterizes DAX as relatively stable, while MDAX and especially SDAX contain smaller companies that tend to move in and out more frequently. This is a statement about composition and turnover, not a promise about returns. A higher rate of entry and exit can increase the trading activity required from an index-tracking product and can alter sector exposure over time.

What the tiers mean for risk and diversification
The labels large cap, mid cap and small cap describe the size of companies in each segment. They do not establish a guaranteed risk ranking or tell you which index will earn the highest return in a particular period.
DAX: concentration in established large companies
DAX gives exposure to the largest eligible German-listed companies and serves as the country’s principal large-cap benchmark. Its scale and relative stability can make it a more straightforward core allocation for an investor seeking broad large-cap exposure. It is still an equity index: prices can fall, individual constituents can disappoint, and the index may be affected by concentrated exposure to its largest members or to particular industries.
MDAX: a middle tier with more company-specific sensitivity
MDAX reaches companies immediately below the DAX group. Mid-sized businesses can have more room to expand than mature large caps, but their earnings, financing conditions and share prices may also be more sensitive to economic cycles, interest rates and changes in investor sentiment. More frequent membership changes mean the exact portfolio represented by MDAX evolves over time.

SDAX: smaller companies and higher turnover
SDAX provides exposure to the next 70 eligible companies below MDAX. Smaller companies often have less trading depth and can experience wider price moves when liquidity is limited or news changes expectations. The index’s comparatively high observed turnover tendency is another practical difference. Neither characteristic proves that SDAX is always riskier or that it will outperform; they describe the type of exposure an investor is taking.

Diversification is more than the constituent count
Counting 40, 50 or 70 names does not fully measure diversification. Free-float weighting can leave a substantial share of an index in its largest companies, while industry concentrations can cause several constituents to respond to the same economic shock. Review the current factsheet for weights and sectors before treating any index as a complete portfolio.
Which index is better for an investor?
There is no universally best index. The useful question is which market-capitalization tier fits the job the investment is meant to perform.
When DAX may fit a core allocation
- You want a single, recognizable benchmark for large German companies.
- You prefer the family’s relatively stable segment and are comfortable with large-cap and sector concentration.
- You need an index commonly used as the reference for exchange-traded funds, listed derivatives and structured products.
When MDAX may fit a deliberate mid-cap allocation
- You already have large-cap exposure and want to add companies below the DAX tier.
- You accept that membership and performance can change more quickly than in DAX.
- You can tolerate larger differences between the index and any one company you might otherwise select directly.
When SDAX may fit a smaller-company allocation
- You specifically want exposure to smaller eligible German companies.
- You can withstand potentially sharper price moves and thinner trading conditions.
- You understand that quarterly chaining and corporate events can change the basket more often.
These are portfolio-role descriptions, not recommendations. An investor’s time horizon, existing holdings, currency exposure, tax position and ability to absorb losses matter more than the label alone.

Index-tracking funds
An exchange-traded fund or other index fund normally holds the constituents, or uses an approved replication method, to follow the index. Before purchasing, check the fund’s current prospectus and factsheet for:
- the exact index version and whether it is a price, performance or total-return variant;
- physical or synthetic replication and how corporate actions are handled;
- ongoing charges, transaction costs, securities lending and tracking difference;
- fund domicile, currency, distribution policy and tax treatment;
- assets, bid–ask spreads, trading hours and the exchange listing available to you.
Do not assume that two products with the same index name have identical costs, domicile, tax treatment or tracking quality. Product availability and rules differ by country and broker.
Listed derivatives
Futures and options can provide precise index exposure or hedging, but they introduce expiry dates, margin requirements, leverage and the possibility of losses exceeding the initial cash outlay. Read the contract specifications and risk disclosure, including the settlement method and the margin process, before trading.
Structured products
Structured products may reference an index while adding issuer credit risk, caps, barriers, participation formulas or early-termination terms. The payoff can differ materially from simply holding an index-tracking fund. The term sheet, not the index name, determines the actual exposure.
Buying constituents directly
Owning individual companies is not the same as investing in an index. Direct ownership requires enough trades to recreate the basket, ongoing decisions when the index changes, and management of corporate actions, dividends, taxes and concentration. A product that tracks an index handles those mechanics according to its mandate, but charges fees and can deviate from the index.
A practical comparison checklist
- Define the role. Decide whether you need a German large-cap core, additional mid-cap exposure or smaller-company exposure.
- Confirm the benchmark. Verify the exact DAX, MDAX or SDAX index variant named in the product documents.
- Check access. Confirm that the fund, derivative or structured product is legally available in your jurisdiction and on your trading venue.
- Compare implementation. Review replication method, fees, spread, tracking difference, fund size and liquidity rather than relying on the index label.
- Model the portfolio. Look at overlap with your existing holdings, sector exposure, currency and the effect of adding a smaller-company segment.
- Plan for reviews. Expect scheduled changes and occasional substitutions after corporate events; do not treat today’s constituents as permanent.
- Set risk controls. For derivatives, understand margin and expiry. For funds, decide how much loss and volatility you can tolerate before investing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming “small” means “higher return.” The index rules identify company size and eligibility, not future performance.
- Calling MDAX or SDAX automatically riskier. Smaller companies and higher turnover can change the risk profile, but realized risk depends on market conditions, sectors, weighting and the product used.
- Confusing an index with a fund. An index has no management fee, bid–ask spread or tracking error; an investment product does.
- Ignoring free float. Headline market capitalization does not equal the free-float value used for ranking and weighting.
- Using stale constituent lists. Reviews occur on a timetable and extraordinary events can cause substitutions between scheduled changes.
- Comparing returns without matching dates and variants. A price index, a performance index and a fund’s net return are different measures. No single undated return comparison can establish which tier is superior.
Bottom line for choosing among the three
DAX, MDAX and SDAX are consecutive size tiers within Germany’s rules-based selection-index family. DAX is the large-cap benchmark; MDAX extends the ranking into mid caps; SDAX reaches the next group of smaller eligible companies. The meaningful differences for investors are company size, free-float ranking, eligibility, review frequency, turnover and the resulting portfolio exposure. Choose an investment product only after checking its exact benchmark, costs, structure, jurisdiction and liquidity, and never infer a guaranteed return or risk ranking from the index tier.
