Deep Silver presents Dawn of War IV as a return to large-scale battles and base-building, with four mechanically distinct factions. The game’s announced strategic layer combines building and expanding a base with choosing units, upgrades, abilities, and battlefield positions. Games Workshop also highlights an expanded Sync Kill system. These are official descriptions, not evidence of final balance or hands-on performance.
#1 Best Overall
The developer’s multiplayer AMA outlines a distinct base-building approach for each faction:
- Space Marines: Structures can be upgraded to unlock units and research. The developers say structures can also be deployed from orbit into areas the player can see.
- Orks: Infantry can construct relatively inexpensive armed structures, letting players move their base closer to the front line.
- Necrons: Buildings extend the Power Matrix, which affects the economy and empowers units. Tomb Pylons can act as teleport destinations.
- Adeptus Mechanicus: Structures connect to the headquarters through a Noosphere Network. The developers say connected units and buildings receive economic and combat benefits, and the network unlocks stronger weapons.
The AMA also describes tactical systems that affect engagements: cover reduces ranged damage; Orks can create cover; Adeptus Mechanicus can build structures that units can garrison; and Necrons do not use cover. Retreat can disengage or reposition a unit while reducing incoming damage, but the unit is temporarily out of the player’s control. On-field reinforcement spends resources to keep units fighting, and the developers caution that relying heavily on automatic reinforcement can drain the economy. These descriptions explain intended mechanics, not proven optimal tactics.

Which factions are playable?
The four announced factions are Space Marines, Orks, Necrons, and Adeptus Mechanicus. The Adeptus Mechanicus is making its Dawn of War series debut. The Space Marine campaign includes the Blood Ravens, and the game also features the Dark Angels as a playable Space Marine sub-faction, according to Games Workshop’s announcement.
| Faction | Announced gameplay identity |
|---|---|
| Space Marines | Upgrade structures to unlock units and research; deploy structures from orbit into areas in vision. |
| Orks | Use relatively cheap armed structures built by infantry to push a base toward the front. |
| Necrons | Extend the Power Matrix for economic and unit benefits; use Tomb Pylons as teleport destinations. |
| Adeptus Mechanicus | Link structures to headquarters through the Noosphere Network for economic and combat benefits, and stronger weapons. |
The gameplay descriptions in this table come from KING Art Games’ multiplayer AMA. They do not establish which faction is easiest for beginners or strongest in competitive play.

How does the campaign work, and can you play co-op?
Yes. Games Workshop announced more than 70 campaign missions and says the campaign can be played solo or with a friend. Deep Silver describes four faction campaigns that feed into one overarching narrative. The story is credited to Black Library author John French. Deep Silver’s FAQ puts the format this way: “The game features four mechanically distinct factions, with each faction enjoying a unique campaign that feeds into a single overarching narrative.”
What multiplayer modes are announced?
Official descriptions name competitive multiplayer, Skirmish, and Last Stand, while the Steam listing marks online PvP and online co-op. In a July 2026 developer AMA, KING Art described three multiplayer match types and said Quick Match defaults to Annihilation. Players can configure matchmaking to include any or all of the three modes.

KING Art says multiplayer commanders are generic faction units chosen before a match, with faction and starting position also selected. Match settings can make commanders starting units or disable them. The developer acknowledges the challenge of balancing asymmetric factions and says it plans to use player data and feedback after launch. That is a development intention, not a measured claim about launch balance.
