David Dastmalchian Says Raúl Juliá’s M. Bison Is the Best Video-Game-Movie Performance

David Dastmalchian, who plays M. Bison in the 2026 Street Fighter film, identifies Raúl Juliá’s 1994 performance as the benchmark for video-game adaptations. Juliá’s General Bison is memorable not because the film around him works conventionally, but because he gives its absurdity a commanding center. Dastmalchian says he studied that example while trying to make his own Bison genuinely dangerous.

Why Juliá’s Bison remains the performance people remember

The 1994 live-action Street Fighter is widely criticized as a film, yet retrospectives repeatedly single out Juliá. Rotten Tomatoes calls it “a legitimately great performance,” while TheWrap describes the movie as anchored by a “legendarily good performance by Julia.” Those assessments point to a specific achievement: Juliá never treats the material as an apology.

He plays Bison as a dictator with enormous self-belief, then lets a knowing smile reveal that he understands the character’s ridiculousness. His diction is grand and deliberate; even ordinary lines sound like proclamations. That combination gives Bison authority without removing the joke. The performance makes the movie’s tonal chaos feel organized around one person’s will.

The line that captures the method

In the film’s most quoted exchange, Juliá’s Bison tells Chun-Li: “For you, the day Bison graced your village was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday.” The sentence compresses megalomania, cruelty and comic timing into a single beat. Bison treats a victim’s defining trauma as routine, and Juliá’s calm delivery makes the indifference more threatening than shouting would.

The unlikely context behind the acclaim

Juliá’s performance became a standout inside an adaptation carrying substantial commercial and critical pressure. By 1994, Street Fighter (1987) and Street Fighter II (1991) had sold more than 10 million copies on Super NES and Sega Genesis. The live-action film ultimately grossed $100 million worldwide on a $35 million budget, but its Tomatometer score was 11 percent.

That contrast matters. Calling Juliá’s Bison the best video-game-movie performance is an argument for a singular performance, not a claim that the entire movie is a traditional success. The surrounding film can be compromised while an actor supplies a complete, coherent character.

What David Dastmalchian said about Juliá

In an interview with The Beat published October 15, 2026, Dastmalchian said, “[Raul Julia’s] performance as M. Bison is one of the most iconic adaptation performances that ever happened.” He added that he “always looked to him as inspiration because I love acting so much.”

Dastmalchian also described a goal beyond imitation: he wanted his Bison to feel authentically dangerous, “like a dictator,” and hoped Juliá would be proud of the result. The statement frames the new performance as a conversation with the old one rather than a replacement for it.

A personal connection to the game

Nerdist reports that Dastmalchian played Street Fighter after school at an arcade called The Fun Factory, spending his quarters on the game. His enthusiasm for the role therefore comes from both the games and the 1994 movie. That nostalgia exists alongside anxiety: he has said the expectations surrounding Bison made the part frightening and exciting.

Juliá and Dastmalchian: a useful comparison

The two performances should be compared by intention and technique, not treated as a contest with a single measurable score.

Axis Raúl Juliá (1994) David Dastmalchian (2026)
Performance style Grand theatrical camp, delivered with precision and visible delight. A new interpretation that Dastmalchian says honors Juliá while establishing its own identity.
Threat Makes a cartoon dictator frightening through composure, status and total self-confidence. Dastmalchian says he aimed for an authentic dictator’s danger rather than relying only on flamboyance.
Relationship to the games and films Established the live-action screen version of Bison during the franchise’s early mainstream peak. Builds on game nostalgia and the cultural memory of Juliá’s film, including a homage to an earlier quotable line.
Tonal control Signals awareness of the absurdity without surrendering authority. Attempts to preserve that legacy while finding a distinct emotional and physical register.

TheWrap notes that the 2026 film includes a homage to Juliá, including a riff on one of the earlier movie’s most quotable lines. That choice acknowledges why the original performance endured: its camp was controlled, not accidental.

Is Street Fighter (1994) worth watching for Juliá?

Yes, if you approach it as a performance showcase rather than a recommendation of the whole adaptation. Juliá supplies a clear reason to watch scenes that might otherwise feel overstuffed or uneven. His Bison gives the film a point of view, a rhythm and a commanding antagonist.

Viewers should still expect an adaptation with a poor overall critical reputation. The useful question is not whether every element succeeds, but whether Juliá’s work justifies a focused rewatch. For many viewers, the answer is the film’s speeches, confrontations and reaction shots: moments where he turns exaggerated villainy into deliberate stagecraft.

Where to watch or buy the original

Availability varies by country and changes over time. For a physical rewatch, look for a legitimate Street Fighter (1994) Blu-ray or DVD and check the exact edition, included commentary, language options and regional compatibility before buying. Rotten Tomatoes has specifically discussed the film’s Blu-ray commentary, making home video a practical way to revisit Juliá’s performance. Streaming and disc listings should be verified for your location at the time of purchase.

Why the “best performance” claim is persuasive

Video-game adaptations often ask actors to balance recognizable iconography with dialogue and situations that can seem exaggerated outside the games. Juliá solved that problem by committing completely. He did not flatten Bison into realism, nor did he play the joke as if it excused the character. He made the dictator’s theatricality the source of both humor and menace.

Dastmalchian’s praise is therefore more than nostalgia. It identifies a repeatable standard: understand the character’s larger-than-life design, give every line a point of view, and maintain enough authority that the absurdity becomes intentional. Whether the 2026 film creates a different high point is a separate judgment. Juliá’s Bison remains the performance against which that judgment is made.
