A dating-app match may be a real person—or someone using a fake identity to build trust and ask for money, personal information, or access to your accounts. A polished profile or intense connection does not prove who is behind it. Look for a pattern: pressure to move off the app, excuses to avoid meeting or video calls, secrecy, and an urgent request for money or help with a financial transaction.
How dating-app romance scams work
Romance scams often unfold over time rather than beginning with an obvious demand. The person may contact you through a dating app or social media, shift the conversation to email, phone, or a messaging service, and communicate frequently to create a sense of closeness. They may say distance, work, or another obstacle prevents a visit. Eventually, a crisis or opportunity becomes a reason to ask for money. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) describes this pattern in its romance-scam guidance.

A request to leave the app is not proof of a scam by itself. But taking the conversation elsewhere can make it harder for the dating platform to observe or moderate what is happening. Be especially cautious if the person combines that move with escalating intimacy, resistance to ordinary verification, secrecy, or financial urgency. The FTC’s 2025 alert also identifies moving the conversation off-platform as a common part of the pattern.
Warning signs to watch for
- They avoid ordinary verification. They repeatedly find reasons not to meet or have a video call, while insisting that the relationship is genuine.
- They push for secrecy or urgency. They ask you not to tell friends or family, or say you must act immediately to prevent a bad outcome or secure a special opportunity.
- Their story turns into a money problem. A sudden emergency or investment pitch appears after they have built trust.
- They want financial help that puts you at risk. They ask you to send money or gifts, share personal or account information, or receive and move money for them.
No single clue proves a match is fraudulent. Assess the whole pattern, particularly whether the person welcomes reasonable checks or responds to them with pressure and new excuses.

Common stories and what the person may ask you to do
| Hook | What they may ask | Why to pause |
|---|---|---|
| Illness, injury, or arrest involving them or someone close to them | Send money for medical, legal, or other emergency expenses | The crisis may be used to create urgency before you can verify the person or situation. |
| Travel, work, or an important delivery that supposedly prevents a visit | Pay travel costs or a fee connected to a shipment or delivery | A recurring obstacle to meeting can keep the relationship online while creating a new reason to request money. |
| A military or overseas-work identity | Provide money or assistance tied to the person’s claimed duties or location | A claimed job or distant posting is not proof of identity. Verify independently rather than relying on the person’s explanation. |
| A supposedly lucrative cryptocurrency or forex opportunity | Invest through a link, platform, wallet, or account they recommend | A romance-to-investment scam can build daily contact before steering you toward a purported opportunity. An apparent early balance or profit may be used to encourage larger deposits; access or contact may then disappear. |
| A request for help handling money | Share account access or receive and transfer funds | You could expose your accounts or become involved in moving money for someone whose identity you have not verified. |
These are potential scripts, not a checklist that every scam follows. The FTC discusses emergency and investment approaches in its guidance and 2023 data spotlight; the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) also warns about relationship-based investment fraud in its relationship fraud guidance.
What reported U.S. figures show—and what they do not
FTC figures describe reports received by the agency, not a census of everyone who experienced a scam. They should not be read as the total number of victims or as a measure of the risk to an individual dating-app user.

How to check a suspicious match
- Pause before paying or sharing information. Do not act under pressure, give the person account access, or help transfer money.
- Ask someone you trust to review the situation. An outside perspective can help you notice inconsistencies or pressure you may miss while emotionally invested.
- Check the identity independently. Search the person’s claimed occupation with the word “scammer,” and reverse-image-search their profile picture. Treat a match or an absence of results as a clue, not conclusive proof.
- Report the profile and stop contact if you suspect a scam. Use the dating app or social platform’s reporting process. The FTC advises people who suspect a romance scam to “Stop communicating with the person immediately.”
The FTC also advises: “Never send money or gifts to a sweetheart you haven’t met in person.” Its guidance on romance scams covers these checks and reporting steps.
If you already sent money or shared access
Contact the company or financial institution that handled the payment as soon as possible and ask whether it can be stopped or refunded. The answer depends on the payment method and circumstances; do not assume recovery is guaranteed.
