For most invoice systems, use a database sequence or identity-style allocator to generate invoice-number candidates, and enforce a UNIQUE constraint on the stored invoice number. Avoid an unprotected SELECT MAX(invoice_number) + 1: concurrent requests can calculate the same value. Sequences prevent that allocation race, but they can leave gaps. If your rules require gapless committed numbers, use a transactionally updated counter row and accept the added serialization. Database mechanics alone do not establish whether your invoices meet local legal or accounting requirements.
How database sequences vs. MAX()+1 differ for generating invoice numbers
| Approach | Concurrent allocation | Gaps and rollback | Concurrency trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
SELECT MAX(...) + 1 without serialization |
Two transactions can read the same maximum and calculate the same candidate. A unique constraint rejects one insert; without it, duplicates can be stored. | Depends on inserts and application behavior; this method does not itself define a safe numbering policy. | May appear simple, but requires explicit serialization to be safe under concurrent requests. |
| Database sequence or identity-style allocator | Designed to allocate distinct candidates concurrently. Keep a unique constraint to protect the stored data. | Gaps are expected: allocations are generally not returned after rollback or if a number is otherwise unused. | Generally avoids serializing every allocation through one counter row. Exact behavior depends on the database engine and configuration. |
| Transactionally updated counter row | Serializes allocation through the row lock while the invoice is inserted. | Can provide gapless committed assignment when allocation and invoice insertion are handled in the same transaction, subject to how cancellations and voids are recorded. | More expensive under concurrent demand; transactions contend for the counter. |
These are technical behaviors, not a comparison of legal validity. Vendor documentation does not determine whether a jurisdiction permits gaps, which invoices share a numbering series, or how voided numbers must be treated.
Why MAX()+1 can assign the same invoice number twice
Suppose the largest stored number is 104. Transaction A reads 104 and calculates 105. Before A inserts, transaction B also reads 104 and calculates 105. Both then try to insert the same candidate. If the invoice-number column has a unique constraint, one insert fails; without that constraint, both rows may be stored with 105.
Application code that checks the maximum before inserting cannot, by itself, prevent this race. PostgreSQL documents that unique constraints enforce uniqueness and automatically create an index. Treat uniqueness as a database invariant, not an assumption about request timing: PostgreSQL CREATE TABLE documentation.

What a sequence does—and does not—guarantee
A sequence allocates candidates without relying on each request to read the current maximum. PostgreSQL documents nextval as atomic across sessions; SQL Server also provides independent sequence objects. In either case, protect the invoice-number column with a unique constraint: allocating candidates and enforcing uniqueness in stored rows are separate responsibilities. See PostgreSQL sequence functions and SQL Server sequence numbers.
A sequence is not necessarily gapless
Sequence values are commonly consumed when allocated, not when an invoice transaction commits. If a transaction obtains a value and later rolls back, that value generally is not put back into circulation. PostgreSQL also documents gaps from conflict handling and crashes; SQL Server identifies rollback and unused allocations as possible gap causes. A missing value therefore does not, by itself, prove that an invoice row is missing.

A sequence is not a promise about commit order
Allocation order and transaction commit order are different. A lower sequence value may belong to a transaction that commits later than one with a higher value. Do not treat a sequence as a guarantee that invoice records become visible in the same order as their numbers.
Why there may be gaps in your sequence
- An invoice transaction allocated a number and then rolled back.
- An application obtained a number but did not use it to create an invoice.
- A conflict or failed operation consumed an allocation.
- A database crash or engine-specific allocation behavior left values unused.
The exact causes depend on the database engine and configuration. MySQL InnoDB, for example, has configurable AUTO_INCREMENT lock modes; more concurrency can permit interleaving and gaps in values produced by a statement, and locking behavior interacts with replication requirements. See the MySQL 8.4 InnoDB AUTO_INCREMENT documentation.

Do invoice numbers have to be gapless?
That is a jurisdiction- and business-rule question, not something a sequence feature can answer. The database manuals cited here describe allocation and locking; they do not establish which numbering format or scope local tax rules require, whether gaps are allowed, or what to do with cancelled invoices. Check the applicable tax or accounting authority’s rules for your jurisdiction, or consult a qualified adviser.
If gapless committed numbering is a confirmed requirement, PostgreSQL describes one technical approach: store the next number in a counter row, lock that row, increment it, and insert the invoice within the same transaction. The lock must remain in effect through the invoice insertion so another transaction cannot take the same counter value. PostgreSQL cautions that exclusive counter-table locking is much more expensive than sequences, especially when many transactions need numbers concurrently: PostgreSQL CREATE SEQUENCE documentation. Decide separately how cancelled or voided invoices are recorded; the database behavior does not settle that accounting treatment.

Which approach should you choose?
- Ordinary numbering with distinct identifiers: use a sequence or identity-style allocator, plus a unique constraint on the invoice-number field.
- Gapless committed numbering is explicitly required: use a counter-row design that allocates and inserts in one transaction, and evaluate the resulting contention.
- You are considering MAX()+1: do not use it unprotected. If retained for a special reason, the allocation must be serialized, and the column still needs a unique constraint.
- You need a number before inserting an invoice: a sequence can provide a candidate independently of the row insert, but an unused or abandoned candidate may leave a gap. A counter-row strategy must keep allocation and invoice insertion in the same transaction to preserve its gapless property.
For either design, handle a uniqueness violation as a specific database error. Retry only when the failure is the identified uniqueness conflict and the entire operation is safe to repeat; do not blindly retry all insert failures. Check your engine’s version, sequence or identity semantics, and replication configuration before relying on exact behavior.
