A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Use recovery software only when the storage device is detected correctly, reads steadily, and the likely problem is logical—such as accidental deletion, formatting, or file-system corruption. Stop and request a professional evaluation when there was physical damage, clicking or grinding, repeated disconnections, a wrong capacity, unstable reads, or when the files are irreplaceable. In every case, stop using the source immediately, never install recovery software on it, and save recovered files to a different device.
Make the decision before you scan
Recovery software and a professional laboratory address different failure classes. Software analyzes readable sectors and reconstructs file-system information. It cannot repair a failed head assembly, damaged circuit board, degraded flash memory, corrupted firmware, or an electrical fault. A laboratory can diagnose those conditions and may use controlled hardware, firmware, or chip-level methods, but no provider can guarantee a result.

The safest decision rule is:
- Stable device + logical loss: a cautious software attempt can be reasonable when the data is replaceable enough to tolerate failure.
- Physical symptoms, unstable media, or unacceptable loss: power down and seek an evaluation before further experimentation.
“Detected” does not necessarily mean “healthy.” A drive can appear in an operating system while its heads, controller, or flash translation layer is failing. Conversely, a drive that is absent after a drop or liquid exposure should not be repeatedly power-cycled to see whether software can find it.
Stop-use checklist: do this first
Every additional write can overwrite deleted content. Installing a program, downloading updates, browsing to the affected disk, or saving recovered files there can reduce what remains recoverable. Repeated scans also stress a marginal device.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Stop using the source. Shut down normally if possible; if the device is making abnormal sounds or repeatedly disconnecting, remove power rather than continuing tests.
- Disconnect it from routine use. Do not boot an operating system from the affected disk, copy new files to it, or run repair utilities that write changes.
- Do not install recovery software on the source. Install it on another internal disk or a separate computer.
- Prepare a separate destination. Recovered files and, where practical, a disk image need storage that is not the source. Verify the destination has enough free space and is compatible with your computer.
- Decide whether failure is acceptable. If losing the remaining chance would be unacceptable, stop here and contact a specialist.
A disk image is a sector-by-sector copy used as the working source. Imaging can limit repeated reads of a stable device and lets you try different tools without touching the original. It is not a license to keep powering a failing drive: abnormal noises, disappearing devices, or rapidly worsening read errors call for professional handling.
Recognize physical warning signs
Choose a laboratory evaluation rather than DIY scanning when any of these symptoms is present:
- Clicking, grinding, beeping, scraping, or repeated spin-up and spin-down sounds from a hard disk.
- A drop, crush, liquid spill, fire, surge, or other physical event immediately before the failure.
- The device repeatedly disconnects, freezes the computer, or becomes available only intermittently.
- The reported capacity is zero, greatly reduced, or different from the label.
- The device is not detected in firmware or the operating system despite known-good cables and ports.
- Reads are extremely slow, error out continually, or become less stable during use.
These signs indicate that continued operation could worsen mechanical or electronic damage. A specialist can first assess the condition and choose whether imaging, component work, firmware work, or another controlled method is appropriate. Do not open a hard-disk enclosure or swap parts in an unclean environment; contamination and incompatible donor parts can reduce later options.
When software is a reasonable first attempt
Software is most defensible when the device is correctly identified, maintains a stable connection, and the event was logical rather than mechanical. Typical examples include:
- Files deleted accidentally and the disk has not been used heavily since.
- A volume was formatted or its partition was removed, while the hardware still reads normally.
- A file system became corrupted after an improper shutdown, and the media remains consistently readable.
- A memory card or external disk is visible at its expected capacity and does not disconnect during a careful read.
Even in these cases, software is a risk-managed attempt, not a promise. The value of the files matters as much as the symptom. Family photos with no other copy, legal evidence, business records, and research data deserve a lower-risk path than replaceable downloads.

Why deletion and continued use matter
Most file systems remove or alter directory references when a file is deleted while leaving some of the underlying content in place. Until those sectors are reused, a recovery program may reconstruct names, folders, or file contents. New files, application caches, system updates, and even normal background activity can reuse those sectors.
Recovery quality therefore tends to decline with continued use, but it is not binary. A scan may find a complete file, a file with damaged portions, or only fragments. A preview showing a recognizable image or document demonstrates that some data is readable; it does not guarantee that the saved file will open intact or that every file in the same folder is recoverable.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not run a “repair” command simply because the operating system offers one. File-system repair can write new metadata and may make a later reconstruction harder. Preserve the original state first, preferably by imaging a stable source or having a specialist assess it.
SSD recovery has different constraints
An SSD can look healthy and still offer poorer recovery prospects than a hard disk for a deleted file. SSD controllers distribute writes across flash cells, maintain a flash translation layer, and may erase blocks through TRIM or a vendor-specific garbage-collection process. Encryption can also be integrated into the controller or system.
TRIM tells an SSD which logical blocks are no longer needed. Once the controller has erased or repurposed those cells, software may have nothing meaningful to reconstruct. The timing varies with the drive, operating system, controller behavior, encryption, and how much the device has been used. It is therefore inaccurate to say that every deleted SSD file is impossible to recover or that every SSD is recoverable.

If an SSD has physical symptoms, an absent controller, an incorrect capacity, or unstable reads, stop powering it and seek specialist advice. A laboratory may have options beyond consumer software, but manufacturer assistance and the exact flash technology can determine whether those options exist.

| Decision axis | Software attempt | Professional recovery |
|---|---|---|
| Best-fit failure | Logical loss on stable, readable media. | Physical, electrical, firmware, or unstable failures; cases where DIY attempts are too risky. |
| Risk to remaining data | Installs, writes, and repeated scans can overwrite content or stress a failing device. | Controlled assessment and procedures can reduce unnecessary operation, but recovery is not risk-free. |
| Initial cost | Usually lower; licenses, scan limits, and supported media vary by product. | Usually higher; request an evaluation and a complete quote before authorizing work. |
| Data value | Appropriate when failure is tolerable and files are replaceable enough. | More defensible for irreplaceable, business-critical, legal, or highly sensitive files. |
| Device dependencies | Operating system, file system, interface, media type, encryption, TRIM, and tool compatibility matter. | Labs may use hardware, firmware, or chip-level methods unavailable to consumer tools. |
| Outcome certainty | A scan or preview is not proof that files will open or that all data is present. | No laboratory can promise success; the result depends on the failure and the media’s condition. |
A cautious software workflow
Proceed only after the source passes the stability test and you accept the possibility that a DIY attempt could reduce later options.
1. Set up a safe workstation
- Use a separate computer or a healthy system disk for the recovery application.
- Connect the source through a reliable cable, enclosure, or adapter. Avoid loose hubs and adapters that repeatedly reset.
- Attach a destination disk with enough capacity for an image and the recovered files.
- Prevent automatic backup, indexing, synchronization, and download software from writing to the source.
2. Image the source when it reads steadily
Create a sector-level image if the device can be read consistently. Work from the image rather than repeatedly scanning the original. Record the source’s reported capacity and connection details so you can identify the image later. If imaging stalls, the device disappears, or sounds change, stop rather than forcing it through more passes.
3. Scan without writing to the source
Choose the correct physical device or image, not merely a drive letter that could point to the wrong volume. Select the file-system and partition options that match the source when the software requests them. Do not format, initialize, or “fix” the source to make it appear in the program.
4. Preview and triage results
Use preview to identify file names, folder paths, dimensions, or document structure. Prioritize the most important files first. A healthy preview means the tool can read some content; it does not establish that a full file will survive export.

5. Save to a different device
Export recovered data to the prepared destination, never back to the affected source or its image. Preserve the original directory structure when that helps later verification, and keep a log of which files were recovered, partially recovered, or unreadable.
6. Stop when the case becomes unstable
Abort if the source disconnects, develops abnormal sounds, reports a changing capacity, or causes the computer to freeze. More scans are not automatically better; on failing hardware they can consume the remaining operating time.
How to choose and evaluate software
Product names and prices change, so evaluate the tool against the case rather than choosing by a dated ranking. Confirm these points before installing:
- Supported operating systems, file systems, interfaces, and media types.
- Whether the free mode can scan and preview, and what limits apply to saving results.
- Whether the application can work from a disk image instead of the original device.
- How it handles deleted partitions, formatted volumes, raw file carving, and encrypted media.
- License scope, refund terms, activation limits, and whether an update is required before export.
Do not pay solely because a preview contains filenames. Verify that representative files open, that their sizes are plausible, and that the license terms cover the computer and media you are using.
What professional recovery involves
A reputable provider should begin with an evaluation, explain what was observed, and obtain approval before chargeable work. Ask how the device will be handled, where your data will be stored, and how returned files will be delivered. For sensitive material, ask about access controls, confidentiality, retention, and secure deletion.

Questions to ask before authorizing work
- Is there an evaluation fee, and is it credited toward recovery?
- Is there a charge when no usable data is recovered?
- Will you receive a written quote and a file-list sample before approval?
- What turnaround is expected, and what events could change it?
- How are original media, donor parts, images, and recovered files secured?
- What happens if the device is encrypted or the controller cannot be read?
- Which costs require separate approval, such as parts, expedited work, or return shipping?
Send the provider an accurate timeline: the last known-good use, deletion or failure event, operating system, encryption status, physical incidents, and every action already taken. Do not conceal a previous opening, repair, or software attempt; that information affects triage.
Costs, timing, and historical figures
There is no current, independent market-wide price or success-rate benchmark that can responsibly answer “how much will my recovery cost?” Complexity, media type, encryption, damage, capacity, turnaround, and manufacturer support all change the quote. Treat any universal price or success promise as a warning sign.
| Figure | What it actually represents |
|---|---|
| About $1,500 and nearly three weeks | An industry-average HDD recovery cost and turnaround cited in a 2015 SNIA-hosted whitepaper; historical context, not current pricing. |
| $694 and six business days | Gillware’s fiscal-year 2013 average for HDD recoveries, reported in that whitepaper; provider- and period-specific. |
| $700 and five business days; more than 90% success | Gillware figures for a defined subset of full-disk-encrypted SSD cases with manufacturer assistance, reported in 2015; not a general SSD probability. |
| More than $3,500 | Gillware’s reported average service fee for SSD cases without manufacturer assistance in the same historical source; not a current quote. |
The whitepaper explains that SSD cost, time, and outcome vary with encryption, flash-translation technology, and whether the manufacturer assists. Those variables are why a provider must inspect the specific device before quoting.
Common mistakes and safer alternatives
- Continuing to browse the disk: shut down and isolate it; normal writes can overwrite deleted sectors.
- Installing the tool on the affected volume: install elsewhere or use another computer.
- Saving results to the source: use a separate destination with verified capacity.
- Running repair utilities first: preserve an image or seek evaluation before changing file-system metadata.
- Repeatedly power-cycling a clicking drive: stop and use a laboratory; mechanical damage can worsen.
- Assuming a preview is a guarantee: open test files and expect partial or corrupt results.
- Treating an SSD like an HDD: account for TRIM, controller behavior, encryption, and garbage collection.
- Choosing by an old price list: request current written terms, including no-recovery charges and privacy handling.
Use backups to avoid the decision
A recovery plan is not a backup. Keep at least one independently stored copy of important files, use versioned backups for documents that change, and periodically test that files can actually be restored. Maintain a copy offline or otherwise protected from ransomware and accidental deletion. Backups cannot recover a file that was never copied, but they turn most deletion and device-failure events into a restoration task instead of a forensic one.
For high-value data, document which copy is primary, when each backup runs, and who can access it. That preparation also gives a laboratory or software operator a clear target if recovery is ever required.
Bottom line: match the method to the failure and the stakes
A stable, correctly detected device with a recent deletion or file-system problem can justify one careful software attempt—preferably from an image, with the application and output kept off the source. Physical damage, unstable reads, wrong capacity, abnormal sounds, or irreplaceable data justify stopping immediately and obtaining a professional evaluation. Neither route guarantees success, and every hour of continued use can change the odds.
