Browser automation can move data between web applications when APIs, exports, or supported connectors are unavailable—but Selenium, Playwright, Puppeteer, and ChromeDriver are automation building blocks, not turnkey migration systems. A dependable migration needs explicit field mapping, safe authentication, idempotent retries, reconciliation, and a rollback plan in addition to scripts that click and type.
When browser-based migration is appropriate
Start by checking whether the source or destination provides an API, export/import function, or supported connector. Those interfaces usually expose clearer identifiers and validation rules. Use browser automation when those paths cannot handle the required records, fields, workflow approvals, or account edition.
A browser script observes the same pages a user sees. It can sign in, search, open records, copy values, create destination records, upload files, and submit forms. It can also break when labels, layouts, timing, permissions, anti-bot controls, or validation rules change. Treat the work as an engineered data pipeline, not as a macro.
Choose the browser tool
| Tool | Best fit | Important limitation or characteristic |
|---|---|---|
| Selenium/WebDriver | Broad browser interoperability, an established shared interface, or distributed execution with Grid | WebDriver is a W3C Recommendation; Selenium Grid allocates browsers across machines. Selenium IDE recording replays actions but does not create mappings or correctness checks. |
| Chrome for Testing + ChromeDriver | Chrome-focused, repeatable environments | Chrome for Testing supplies versioned browser binaries and matching ChromeDriver releases; headless mode supports unattended runs. |
| Puppeteer | JavaScript automation centered on Chrome | Controls Chrome through CDP or WebDriver BiDi and downloads a compatible Chrome for Testing binary by default. |
| Playwright | Launching managed browsers or using its multi-browser framework | It can attach to Chromium over CDP, but that connection is lower fidelity than Playwright’s own protocol. The regular Chrome profile is unsupported for automation; use a separate user-data directory. |

A migration workflow that can survive failure
1. Define the contract
Write a source-to-destination mapping before opening a browser. For every field, specify transformation, requiredness, allowed values, truncation rules, attachment handling, and what happens to duplicates. Decide whether rerunning an item updates, skips, or creates another record. Prefer a stable source identifier stored in a destination field or an external manifest.
2. Pilot representative records
Choose a small sample containing ordinary records, long text, missing optional values, special characters, attachments, duplicates, and permission edge cases. Run in a test tenant when available. Capture the source identifier, destination identifier, status, timestamps, and error details for every attempt.
3. Pin the runtime
Pin the browser, driver, and framework versions in your build environment. Chrome for Testing and matching ChromeDriver versions are designed for this repeatability. Store the exact versions with each run so a later investigation can reproduce the behavior.
4. Use a dedicated identity and profile
Create a least-privilege account and a separate browser user-data directory. Never automate against a personal profile. Playwright documents failures with the regular Chrome default profile. Keep cookies, downloaded files, traces, screenshots, and logs access-controlled and short-lived.

5. Automate observable checkpoints
Wait for a specific selector, network-idle condition, or application state rather than sleeping for an arbitrary interval. After saving, read back the destination record and verify a stable confirmation, identifier, or field value. Treat a timeout, bot check, blank page, or validation message as a recorded failure—not as success.
6. Reconcile and close out
Compare source and destination counts, required-field coverage, duplicate totals, attachment counts, and application-specific totals. Produce an exception report with retryable and non-retryable causes. Keep the original export or manifest and define how to reverse or quarantine partial changes before running a large batch.
Minimal Playwright pattern
The following Python example illustrates structure, not a universal application selector. Replace selectors and mapping logic with values from your systems.
from playwright.sync_api import sync_playwright
import json, os
with sync_playwright() as p:
browser = p.chromium.launch(headless=True)
context = browser.new_context(user_data_dir=None)
page = context.new_page()
page.goto("https://source.example/login", wait_until="domcontentloaded")
page.get_by_label("Email").fill(os.environ["SOURCE_USER"])
page.get_by_label("Password").fill(os.environ["SOURCE_PASSWORD"])
page.get_by_role("button", name="Sign in").click()
page.wait_for_selector("[data-record-id]")
records = page.locator("[data-record-id]").all()
results = []
for record in records:
source_id = record.get_attribute("data-record-id")
name = record.locator(".name").inner_text()
# Map and submit to the destination using its documented UI.
results.append({"source_id": source_id, "status": "mapped", "name": name})
with open("migration-manifest.json", "w", encoding="utf-8") as f:
json.dump(results, f, indent=2)
browser.close()
For production, separate extraction, transformation, and loading phases where possible. Use bounded concurrency, a queue, exponential backoff for transient navigation failures, and an idempotency check before creating each destination record. Do not retry a submission blindly when the first request may have succeeded; search for the source identifier first.

Authenticated sessions and security boundaries
Attaching to an existing browser can avoid a second login, but it increases exposure. Google Chrome for Developers states that an agent connected to a browser profile can access open tabs, session storage, local storage, cookies, and other data surfaced through JavaScript APIs. Use a disposable profile containing only the migration account. The auto-connect page’s statement that its local server does not send browser data or telemetry to Google applies to that feature and must not be generalized to other agents or hosted services.
Playwright’s connectOverCDP is limited to Chromium and lower fidelity than a Playwright protocol connection. Prefer a browser launched specifically for the job unless a controlled attachment is required. Restrict traces and screenshots because they can contain personal data or tokens.
Performance, reliability, and cost planning
- Measure pages and records per minute in a pilot; do not assume test-suite benchmarks predict migration throughput.
- Keep concurrency below the point where the application throttles or sessions interfere. A few isolated workers are easier to retry and audit than one uncontrolled burst.
- Cache immutable lookups such as option lists, but re-check destination state before writes.
- Persist checkpoints after each successful unit so a process restart resumes rather than repeats completed work.
- Budget for manual review of exceptions, authentication expiry, changed selectors, and records that violate destination rules.
No migration-specific success rate, cost, time-saving, or error-rate statistic is established by the cited documentation.
Common failures and fixes
Browser or driver will not start
Check that the browser and driver versions are paired, the binary exists in the runtime image, and sandbox or container flags match your deployment. Pin versions instead of downloading an untracked “latest” build.

Element is missing or clicks do nothing
Wait for the relevant state, switch into the correct frame, and use stable roles, labels, or data attributes. Avoid brittle XPath tied to visual layout. Confirm the account has permission to see the control.
Login loops or MFA blocks unattended runs
Use an approved service account and documented authentication flow. Do not bypass security controls. If interactive MFA is mandatory, schedule a controlled session with an operator and protect the resulting profile.
Timeouts, blank pages, or bot checks
Record the URL and page state, retry only transient navigation errors, and route bot checks to manual handling. A successful browser navigation is not proof that the record was saved.
Duplicate destination records
Stop creating on uncertain outcomes. Search by the stored source identifier, reconcile the manifest, and then choose update, skip, or quarantine according to your mapping contract.

Use the manifest to resume uncompleted items, keep an exception report, and execute the prewritten rollback or quarantine procedure. Never infer completion from process exit code alone.

ScreenshotNeo provides a single-call way to capture source or destination pages for audit evidence and visual checks. It removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; bot checks, blank pages, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers identify the page verdict and billing result. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for Claude, Cursor, and other MCP clients. One thousand screenshots per month are free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000.

What browser automation cannot prove
A script completing its clicks does not establish that records migrated correctly. Correctness comes from your mapping specification, read-back checks, reconciliation totals, exception handling, and rollback design. Browser frameworks supply control over a browser; your engineering process supplies data integrity.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I migrate data entirely with Selenium IDE recordings?
Recordings can help discover user actions, but they do not define field mappings, duplicate behavior, validation, reconciliation, or rollback. Production migrations need those controls in code or an accompanying workflow.
Should I connect automation to my everyday Chrome profile?
No. Use a dedicated, disposable profile and least-privilege account; profile access can expose cookies, storage, tabs, and other sensitive data.
Is CDP attachment equivalent to native Playwright control?
No. Playwright documents CDP attachment as Chromium-only and lower fidelity than its own protocol connection.
